High Plains Spring by Sharon Hodges

During my summer travels, I was able to study a herd of buffalo near my cabin.  I really enjoyed watching these massive beasts graze the mountain meadows...they were still shedding their winter coats.  This painting was done with brush and palette knives, size 18x22.  Available for purchase.

"Lightning Against Blue" by Karla Nolan

Here's some more of the heavy atmosphere to which I referred in a previous post.  I am mesmerized by Mother Nature, who wouldn't be?  Just when you think you got it all under control (!), here she comes with intensity from the skies, the thunderclaps, the electric show, flying down the various colors looming overhead.  Ooooh!  I makes me shudder just thinking of it!  And, yes, I LOVE to paint it!

Visiting Montepulciano and Wine Tasting in Tuscany with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

12" x 9" oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 2:  TUSCANY ART TREK - Montepulciano
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the second day of our Tuscany Art Trek, we set up our easels at a scenic overlook in Montepulciano while the photographers went exploring. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the blue-domed duomo below set amid the rolling hills and perfectly planted rows about to be harvested. In the afternoon, we visited two wineries and sampled some amazing red wines and the region's prized Vin Santo. Another fantastic day in Tuscany!

Floral Still Life, Hydrangea Still Life, by Carol Schiff, 10x10" Palette Knife Painting

Today I was looking for something soothing and serene........

$150 + 14

I have always been drawn to this color combination of blues, greens, lavenders, and pinks.  Working with a palette knife made it feel even softer to me,  I was in the zone on this one, slinging paint everywhere.  Clean up was not fun!

I hope you have your sunglasses on for day 29. This is the abstract I was working on two days ago and finished today by putting on more layers. I am still trying to decide if it works. I think I like it.

Abstracts are easier to paint in acrylics because of the drying time. Oils take so long to dry or 'tack up' before the next layer so the idea of scumbling effects would only work after waiting several days, even if using liquin as a drying medium. With acrylics you can scumble and change things more easily, which also means that changing direction is easier and quicker which is what's needed with abstract. There are exceptions of course, as usual, it depends on the desired outcome.
Here are some close-ups

Sunset over the vineyard WIP oil painting by Marion Hedger, Day 28, 30 day Challenge

Sunset over the vineyard WIP by Marion Hedger
24x30cm, oil on canvas panel

Day 28, 30 days hath September challenge.

We're back to the vineyards for day 27 but this time at sunset. This is a work in progress. I still need to tone down the colours of the path and include some of the sky colours. I haven't painted many sunsets and trying to balance the colours with the lights and darks is quite a challenge, so I would be grateful for any tips.

This is the same vineyard shown in my autumn vineyard paintings, click here to see - but a different view point by turning 90 deg to the right.

Only 3 days left of the challenge. I'm quite proud with myself as I've kept pace with the challenge and posted every day.

"Gold and Purple, Perennial Favorite" by Karla Nolan

This is for all of you iris lovers out there, albeit maybe it should be a springtime post, rather than an autumn post.  We still need to cut down the garden here in northern Colorado and it is going to be a beautiful weekend to do it.  I hate to say goodbye to the spring and summer flowers, but, ah it must happen.  I love autumn, dread winter, and then look forward to the spring where I know I can zip around the yard seeing the lovely iris bursting forth.  All of this is painted with palette knives, speaking of zipping around, and I can tell you, it's quite a challenge!

"Seeds of Autumn" Original Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

Was on a bike ride with my husband and boys, and as often happens, I had to stop the bike to get a few photos. We were riding past huge fields of fall colors, everything seeding and looking beautiful. The blue sky and warm sunny day was just an added bonus.

He Brought Me Roses
18 x 24 inches Oil on Canvas.

WOW... it was fun getting to paint. I decided to warm up with my knife and did a floral, which I have not done in quite awhile. I decided this because one of my collectors that bought two horse paintings last month loves my flowers the best and wondered why I was not painting them...
This is a huge close up...(click it)  so you have a textured feel of the canvas.

King of the Roost oil painting by Marion Hedger - Day 26, 30 day challenge

King of the Roost by Marion Hedger
Oil, palette knife painting
10x15cm (4x6 inch) on MDF panel
Day 26, 30 days hath September challenge

My first ever rooster/chicken.

I should have paid more attention to the background and I might redo it. I was naughty and didn't pre-plan the background so I floundered a bit for which colours to use. Lesson learnt!

This has given me an idea of a rooster series for my kitchen in a larger size. I'm not particularly fond of chickens IRL but I did enjoy painting this for some reason.

The challenges certainly has me trying a few different things. I have a couple of abstracts in the making which I am allowing to dry up a bit before putting on the final layers as I want a broken paint effect. So maybe tomorrow I will have an abstract for you.

Morning Sun Pink Hollyhocks by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Morning Sun Pink Hollyhocks
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Morning Sun Pink Hollyhocks is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, a scene from my visit last month to the mountains of Utah. The girls and I were driving up a winding country lane when we spotted a massive garden of hollyhocks in every color your heart could desire, there were lipstick red, red wine black, pale pink, white, and hot pink. I whipped out my new IPad and went to town taking pictures, I love using my IPad for photography now, instead of lugging around my heavy Canon when I travel. I just slip my IPad into my purse, and off I go!

Morning Sun is my 25th entry in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge, and I'm all packed and ready for my Tennessee workshop this weekend. SUH-Weet tea drinkers, here I come! Stay tuned to the art bloggy for pictures of my Tennessee flower painting workshop, you may see some familiar faces!

Day 1, Tuscany Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 1:  TUSCANY ART TREK

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the first day of our Tuscany Art Trek, we set up and painted right at the villa where we were staying. The views are incredible of the surrounding valleys and hill towns, and I chose to paint this ancient well on the back of the property framing Pienza in the distance. For lunch we dined al fresco at the farmhouse on local meats, cheeses and amazing fruits and vegetables, and in the afternoon we went exploring in the countryside. A perfect first day in Tuscany!
