When I Think of You

"When I Think of You"
24" x  18", Oil on Stretched Canvas

It's been a while since I've blogged and I'm out of practice but I feel I need to.  This is a painting I did last year from a photo.  The photo featured different colored flowers but that's where a bit of artistic license takes over.

I have been printing calendars for the past few years for sale at the end of the year.  This painting is featured as my May painting for 2020.  If you'd like to be notified of when my 2021 calendars will be offered, please visit my website and join my mailing list or like me on Facebook.  Links below.

Old Fashioned, Rose Still Life Painting By Marion Hedger

Old Fashioned Rose Still Life Painting
By Marion Hedger
Roses still life palette knife painting

My aim was to pay particular attention to the lost and found edges and I'm quite pleased with the effect. Unfortunately the camera always make the edges of palette knife paintings seem sharper than they are.

Impressionist Garden Art, Summer Essence, oil painting by Marion Hedger

Summer Essence by Marion Hedger
24x30cm (approx. 10x12") on MDF canvas panel
Oil painting using palette knife

This is the finished painting from yesterday's inspiration.

OH the joys of photshop elements !!! First it kept crashing. Then adjusting the colours UGH. It seems that you adjust one to get it just right and it throws the other colours off. My camera always seems to have trouble with the blues.  and in trying to adjust the photo the pink roses have lost there brightness.

This close-up shows them much better.

Garden Flowers Inspiration by Marion Hedger

Work in progress, crop by Marion Hedger

April until June is the nicest time in my garden - first the daffodils start nodding their heads, quickly followed by the early irises and tulips. After tulips come the poppies and then the bearded irises. The colours range from the yellows of the daffs, the reds of the tulips and poppies, through to the purples and blues of the irises.

At the moment, the pinks and reds in the form of climbing roses are taking center stage and I took these snaps for my current painting inspiration.

The top image a teaser for the pink rose painting I am working on at the moment. It's nearly finished so all will be revealed tomorrow.

Abstract Roses impressionist floral painting by Marion Hedger

Colourful Abstract Roses, still life painting by Marion Hedger
30 cm x 30 x 3.5 cm (12" x 12" x 1.5")
oil on box / gallery wrapped canvas

Beautiful colorful roses painted in an abstract way with a cream/blue/purple background. The thickly applied knife strokes add texture and movement to the flowers as can be seen in the close-up phot0s - a modern use of impressionism.

Give a gift of everlasting roses for Valentine's Day.

This painting is full of life and will look good in any setting and in either a contemporary or traditional decor. An ideal gift for gardeners, flower arrangers or just flower lovers (and who isn't?).

Last month a local village held it's annual rose festival. This area is well known for growing flowers for the perfume industry (Grasse is not far away), and this village is renown for growing roses and extracting the oil.

Walking through the village, this beautiful rose was making a huge statement in someone's garden, I was very envious. I couldn't resist taking a few photos. I also came away with another climbing rose and several other plants for the garden.

Some close-ups of the texture achieved with the palette knife.

New Year's Resolution by Pamela Blaies

Bright Rosy Morning
24" x 18"
oil on linen

Playing, staying up way too late and sleeping in was fun over the holidays, but I'm glad to be getting a little order back in my life. My New Year's Resolution is to work on keeping a peaceful balance in my life between all that I am trying to juggle. I find when I am disciplined about the time I spend in the studio, I am able to keep my art from taking away from my family and "mom" time. It worked pretty well this week, except I ignored all housework. Oh well - I guess something's gotta give!

I enjoyed painting my Ikebana series so much, I carried on painting a couple of still lifes featuring roses. This is the first and I will post the second tomorrow.

My aim was to pay particular attention to the lost and found edges and I'm quite pleased with the effect. Unfortunately the camera always make the edges of palette knife paintings seem sharper than they are.

Knockout Roses and Flow Blue

I am looking forward to Cottonwood Art Festival this coming weekend. It will be Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th, in Richardson, Texas. Don't miss this festival as it is ranked as one of the best in the nation and is always a top-notch show! I've been busy framing and packing and doing paperwork in preparation, but I always manage to get some painting time in. Here is one of my newest Petite Paintings up for auction.

Water and Air Hydrangeas and Roses and Gifts From Muses by Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Water and Air Roses and Hydrangeas
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Today I received a note from a friend suggesting a combination of yellow and pink roses and blue and purple hydrangeas. It's so good to receive nudges from the muses. I've spent the past few visits with my Mother going through her stacks of books, collecting bits of poetry and snippets from literature textbooks. She has collected literature and poetry textbooks from library sales and bookstores for as long as I can remember and now has shelves filled with these tomes. Before I left her house last week she gave me a tiny book of flower quotes and poetry to carry in my purse, after reciting some of her own poetry from memory (we still have not been able to find her own binder of poetry which disappeared years ago during a house remodel).

It occurred to me today how important the muses in my life have been. Light, air, poetry, flowers, all of these gifts have been muses that fueled my love of art; my mother and her stubborn desire for us to grow in a love for language and words; and that last ingredient, a passion for teaching color, art and painting. I may not have found my dream job in my 20s, but the important thing is I did, at last, find what I was meant to do - share my love for art with others, and help my students to succeed. There is nothing sweeter and no greater gift than to find your path, no matter if you find it late, so long as you find it, at last.

God Bless America! by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen

I hope you enjoyed Memorial Day weekend. It seems inadequate to say "Thank You," but how thankful I am to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom. God Bless America!

My Petite Painting Project - 100 paintings in 100 days is coming right along. I think I am getting close to painting #60! These roses didn't last very long and I had too many commitments, so I wasn't able to paint them enough. I think I will go to the market today and get some more!

Rose Care Tip by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

Love these Heirloom garden roses I found at the market! The way the petals curl inward toward the center is so charming. I put them in this footed glass bowl which perfectly shows them off. I am keeping ice cubes in their water, so they won't open up too fast (warm water makes them open up sooner) and hopefully I will be able paint them for several more days.

Celestial Garden Hydrangea and Rose Container Garden by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

 Celestial Garden Hydrangeas and Rose
Container Garden by Nancy Medina

24X30
Textured Palette Knife/Oil
Gallery Wrap Canvas

Celestial Garden Blue Hydrangeas and Roses is the newest work on the easel in Flower Mound Studio, a tribute to a table full of brightly colored fresh flowers on my handy dandy Rubbermaid roller-cart. Almost everything in my studio is on wheels, so I can move things around and fit the large canvases into small space more easily. I say more easily, because there are still times when I feel I am bumping up against every wall and every piece of furniture, in an attempt to get at a corner of a canvas or get a photo from a little distance away. It's also important and a key to a successful day in the studio to ensure there are at least three large comfy beds nearby upon which the assistant may lounge. They prefer to have variety and many choices, I've noticed, one day wanting the cool hardwood floor on the belly, another wanting to be tucked up under a fuzzy blankey on the bed under the desk. Can you tell this working from home is honing my skills of observation?

Home Sweet Home by Pamela Blaies

After about 3 weeks of travel I am so happy to be home. The flowers and landscapes were amazing and lush in the places I visited and I probably have enough inspiration to last me the year. This painting is of a rosebush in Missouri that I saw early one morning while exploring. It was in a perfectly tended little garden nestled in the shadows of other greenery. I liked how the sun was highlighting the little pink roses in various stages of bloom.

Love and Roses by Pamela Blaies

20" x 16"
Oil on Canvas

My daughter attended her final Cotillion dance last Friday and her wonderful Daddy brought her these gorgeous roses. They were so beautiful I knew I had to paint them. On Valentine's Day, I finally had a chance to sit down and paint after I got the kids off to school. I couldn't wait to get started. As I was putting the final touches on the painting, my husband walked in with another dozen red roses and chocolate dipped strawberries for me. What a knight in shining armor he is!

Roses By North Light by Roxanne Steed

12"x12" oil on deep cradled birch wood panel (sides painted, not necessary to frame, but of course you may if you prefer).

Flowers seem intended for the solace of ordinary humanity. ~John Ruskin

I've learned to not always listen to the weatherman. They predicted it would rain all morning and begin to clear in the afternoon. I awoke to find it perfectly sunny and clear this morning, but I had cut these roses the night before. Of course I was determined to paint them. I had re-arranged a bit of furniture in the studio (which I have pretty much abandoned all summer and painted out-side) so I could have just the right natural light fall on them from my north-facing windows (which allows nice even light in all day). Then by afternoon, there came the pouring rains! Glad I didn't listen to that turned around forecast!
