Demonstration Ad Nauseum? by Pamela Blaies

Still Life Study in Light
12" x 9"
oil on linen

I promise this will be the final blog about my first venture into demonstrating in front of a live audience. Since my last two blog posts discussed the upcoming event, you might have guessed I was a little apprehensive about it. But once I started painting, the nervousness just melted away. I only had about an hour to work, but the Weatherford Art Association was a great crowd and it was fun discussing my process as the painting unfolded. Here is the painting from that night.

Demonstration Preparation by Pamela Blaies

An Orange and a Silver Pitcher Study
12" x 9"
oil on linen

I'm finally starting to recover from "the crud." It is nice to be feeling better. Painting this study of an orange and a silver pitcher yesterday was just the way to get warmed up for the painting demonstration I will be doing for the Weatherford Art Association on Monday evening. I'll have less than an hour to paint so it should be fun to watch! Come on out if you are around the area. It will be at the Firehouse Gallery, 119 Palo Pinto, Weatherford, Texas, starting around 7 pm.

Painting Demonstration Initiation by Pamela Blaies

Pears and Winter Berries
6" x 6"
oil on linen

My doctor calls it an upper respiratory infection - I call it "the crud." Whatever it's name is, it sure has been slowing me down for the past week. I hope to recuperate before Monday night, February 24th, when I will be doing my first live painting demonstration in front of an audience. It starts at 7 pm at the Firehouse Gallery in Weatherford, Texas. The address is 119 Palo Pinto, Weatherford, Texas. I am excited and a little anxious.  But it should be fun and I'd love to see you there!

Teeter Totter Temperatures by Pamela Blaies

An Apple, An Orange and a Single White Rose
oil on linen
5" x 7"

One thing they say in Texas is, "If you don't like the weather, just wait and it will change." That has certainly been true this week. Last Sunday had a high of 76 degrees, then two days later the low of the day was 22! Now, today has been in the 70s and by Sunday it is forecasted to have a low of 30. This see-saw weather is taking a toll on me and I've been feeling a little under the weather, but I thought I would share a little petite I finished this week. Hope you have a great weekend!

Warmth on a Cold Day by Pamela Blaies

Warm Glow
18" x 14"
oil on linen

Painting light and air around these objects gave this whole composition a warm glow. I had an intentional purpose in exaggerating the light and reflections around the orange. I wanted to make sure the edges of the metal pitcher right up against the dark of the background drew the eye into the focal point, but didn't steal the focus. I love the drama it created of intense light. After I finished up the painting, I had to get out to run some errands and it was cold! Below freezing. I wanted to be back in my cozy studio in front of the "warm glow."  Hope you are all keeping warm!

Color and Light Reflections by Pamela Blaies

Antique Glass and Red Tulips
oil on linen
24" x 18"

These red tulips begged me to take them home from the market. I had fun painting them all last week. In this composition, I put some antique bottles right up next to a bouquet of them which created some beautiful color and light reflections.

New Year's Resolution by Pamela Blaies

Bright Rosy Morning
24" x 18"
oil on linen

Playing, staying up way too late and sleeping in was fun over the holidays, but I'm glad to be getting a little order back in my life. My New Year's Resolution is to work on keeping a peaceful balance in my life between all that I am trying to juggle. I find when I am disciplined about the time I spend in the studio, I am able to keep my art from taking away from my family and "mom" time. It worked pretty well this week, except I ignored all housework. Oh well - I guess something's gotta give!

Inspired by Pamela Blaies

Orange Reflections
12" x 16"
oil on linen

I went to see the Sorolla exhibit at the Meadows Museum in Dallas yesterday with some artist friends. He was a very prolific artist during the late 1800s and early 1900s and painted hundreds of large (like climb-on-a-ladder-and-tape-your-brushes-to-long-sticks large) paintings! I've seen many of Sorolla's paintings in books, but seeing a photograph is nothing compared to the amazing experience of viewing his work in person. His use of color temperature to create light was fabulous. But I think what was most interesting to me was his thick, juicy paint.  I found myself looking as closely as allowed, then backing away to see the overall effect over and over again with each painting.

Looking Forward to 2014 by Pamela Blaies

September Reflections
20" x 16"
oil on linen

Taking a break from the studio to spend time with my family over the Christmas holidays has been rejuvenating. It may seem a little early to begin thinking about spring, but I'm already getting excited about planning my schedule. I received invitations to exhibit in the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in Houston, Texas and Southlake Art in the Square and I'm thrilled. They both rank at the top of the list of the best fine art festivals in the United States. I'll be participating in a few group exhibits this spring as well. Looking forward to the new year!

Don't Go Through Life, Grow Through Life by Pamela Blaies

One Pink Rose and a Ginger Jar
9" x 12"
oil on linen

I just returned home from attending a workshop with Quiang Huang. He is a fantastic painter and teacher. His workshop was fun and he did several demos. I picked up so much just from observing his technique, use of color and attention to value and temperature. The more I learn about color, composition and value, the more I see how the infinite ideas and possibilities will take more than a lifetime for me to explore. Here is a piece I painted this afternoon.  I used a brush for most of this one, but there's nothing like a palette knife for beautiful, juicy highlights!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...by Pamela Blaies

He Knows My Favorite Color
oil on linen
SOLD

OK - so the weather here in Texas isn't snowy, yet. But while shopping over the weekend, it was nice to hear Christmas music piping through the speakers, then more Christmas music in the car on the way home. I am excited that the Christmas season is upon us. I am also very happy to share that the painting "He Knows My Favorite Color" found a new home this past weekend!

Painting Glass by Pamela Blaies

Apples and a Green Glass Bottle
14" x 11"

Surrounded by a sea of cool colors, the one Red Delicious apple in front tries to steal the show. But I think the star is the green glass bottle. Painting glass with all of the dimension, subtle color and reflections is challenging and fun!

Process in Reverse by Pamela Blaies

In Season
12" x 16"

Click any photo for purchase information.

I usually do small studies before painting a larger piece, but this time my process got all turned around. As I set out my composition, intending to focus only on a couple of pieces of fruit, the still life just seemed to put itself together inviting me to create the larger painting, In Season. I liked the colors and light so much, I left the composition right were it was overnight and painted two Petites (6" x 6") the next day. Fun!

Packing and Shipping Day by Pamela Blaies

Lemons and a Little Blue Bottle
SOLD

I try to do my "office work" in chunks of time, so it doesn't interfere with my creative time. It was packing and shipping day for me today. I had to ship out a few paintings that found new homes this week. Lemons and a Little Blue Bottle, painted with a palette knife, was just sold through UGallery, a virtual gallery offering artwork juried and selected by curators. They have new art each week that is fun to browse. See more of my available palette knife paintings HERE.

Peaceful Pasture by Pamela Blaies

Peaceful Pasture
oil on liinen
7" x 5"

Every time I visit the farm out near the Hill Country where my mom lives, I am inspired to paint landscapes.  There is so much beauty out in the country. I was captivated by this scene when I saw the way the light hit the fence posts and sparkled on the high grass in the distance.  See the auction for this painting HERE.

Country Road Take Me Home by Pamela Blaies

Country Road Take Me Home
7" x 5"
oil on linen

My mom was running late when I arrived in Georgetown last week and forgot to leave me a key. While waiting, I took a little time to walk down this gravel road out to my mom's farm as the sun was going down. It was so quiet and peaceful. I was awestruck at how blue the road looked at that time of day. I didn't have my paints with me, so I took some photos and intensely studied the colors I saw to commit the scene to memory. I worked loosely to get the fresh feeling of a plein air piece.

Oh, Happy Day! by Pamela Blaies

Copper Teapot and Lemons
oil on linen
11" x 14"

Getting home from Georgetown Art in the Square Monday afternoon, I looked at my truck - packed to the brim with festival stuff and waiting to be unloaded. Then I walked into my studio, which looked like a tornado hit it and my kitty had coughed up a hairball in the middle of the carpet. I felt exhausted, so I decided "I'll think about that tomorrow." (I had to work that last quote in - I just finished reading "Gone with the Wind" last night.) Well, anyway, I haven't been able to do any painting all week, but my studio is now reorganized and looking fantastic. I also received a call from my gallery, Stinger Studio in Georgetown, with good news of several sales. Best of all, a new shipment of canvases just arrived! Painting day - Oh, happy day!
