Bits of red underpainting showing through.
I suppose I could have titled this painting "Strange Trees"!  They are done by palette knives, as is most of the painting.  The piece is very "edgy" (abstract) - I hope you like it!

"Painting Outside the Lines" Workshop with Niki Gulley Nov. 2-4

textured oil painting • 36" x 36"

I wanted this birch painting to be very colorful and whimsical, like through the eyes of a child looking into the treetops with fascination. Featured Artist Niki Gulley at the Good Art Company, Nov. 2nd

"Autumn Carnival" ©2012 Niki Gulley
36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

The Umber Effect by Pamela Blaies

20" x 16"
oil on canvas

The subtle greens of this painting came from experimenting with two new colors on my palette. I didn't actually use any tubes of green, just mixes from my usual ultramarine blue, different cad yellows and yellow ochre. But I also added raw and burnt umber to the mix this time. I really like the effect the umbers have on my palette.

Roussillon by Jeannette Johnston

The village of Roussillon is set in a stunning location - its red houses built on a hill top contrast strikingly with the dark green woods that surround it. Beneath the village red cliffs plunge down steeply to the plain below. The ochre quarries, which are no longer mined, are open to the public and there is a beautiful path winding round between steep banks of yellow and pink rock, at places forming stacks known in Provence as 'chimneys'.

Sitting on my easel....by Kay Wyne

Contemporary Palette Knife Rooster

This painting is not finished....needs to dry after layers and layers of paint were applied after getting bored with a still life drawing of peppers.  I did not think the basket of peppers were going to make it....I just wasn't into it.  So I started slapping thick layers of paint with the palette knife, painted a rough sketch of a rooster, and got colors going.  More to come.....thanks for viewing.  Kay

Autumn Aspen Painting available as Canvas Prints by Niki Gulley

"Emergence" ©2012 Niki Gulley
20" x 30" or 28" x 40" Embellished Canvas Print

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit more so than an exact replica of the forest, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

Emergence is now available as a stretched canvas print.
I have added thick paint to the prints so they are loaded with texture.
They are UV coated and are stretched with the painting continuing around the edges on 3/4" stretcher bars so that they can be hung as is without a frame, or if you prefer a traditional look, they can be framed also.
Please e-mail me for frame sample and prices or if you would prefer the print on deeper stretcher bars, e-mail me for a quote.
20" x 30" for $295 • 28" x 40" for $495

A close up detail of the added thick paint in the leaves and the trunks.
Print wrapped around 3/4" stretcher bars.

Red Pansies by Pamela Blaies

12" x 24"
oil on canvas

The workshop this week with Sherrie McGraw has been really great. I'm learning so many new ideas. I've been utilizing her technique of blocking in the composition with abstract shapes to see the idea on canvas before painting. This really makes much more sense to me than sketching it out with pencil. Here is the painting I worked on yesterday and finished up today.

Just Sold at the Good Art Company! In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Workshop Week by Pamela Blaies

9" x 12"
oil on linen

This week, I am taking a still life workshop from a wonderful artist named Sherry McGraw.  We're working on composition and color.  I don't think one can ever learn enough about composition and color.  Here is the study I finished on Monday.  The underpainting and toning were done in Burnt Umber.  I've never used it much in my paintings before, but it has now been added to my permanent palette.  I love it!

I love to share my art and inspiration.  Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

Violin Vision in Blue original oil painting by Karen Tarlton

Violin Vision in Blue
20x24
Oil
I know the holiday season has begun
when I'm so busy painting
I don't have time to blog ;)
This is one of my favorite figurative works to date.
Impressionism is all about piecing colors together so that when
one is next to another they visually unite into something
Beautiful.
The knife allows me to lay the paint like frosting.
Sculpting the color into form is what I do.
Joy!

Plein Air Painting Class at the Arboretum with Niki Gulley

"Autumn Clematis" ©2012 Niki Gulley
10" x 12" textured oil painting

I created this little painting of the purple Clematis at the Dallas Arboretum last fall with palette knife and thick oil paint. It was so peaceful in the Poetry Garden, that it seemed like a perfect place to set up my easel. I liked the contrast of the cool purple in the flowers against the warm light of the textured wall behind them. Accentuating the circular design they were forming along with forming curving paint strokes, adds to a feeling of movement and energy, almost as if the petals are dancing in the breeze.

If you, too, would like to paint outdoors, join me this Wednesday, Oct. 24th, when I'll be teaching a Plein Air Painting Workshop sponsored by the Dallas Arboretum. It will be a great introduction to painting outdoors for beginning artists, as well as an opportunity for advanced artists to enhance their skills. Been having a little love affair with Palm Trees as of late.
Love the easy breezy relaxed way they have about them,
Their graceful sway,
The I don't have a care in the world sound.
Just makes you want to sit under one and and enjoy a coconut cocktail.

So I decided it might be fun to play with some Palm Trees in the studio.
There is the more Traditional palm,
color and style.
And,
The less traditional with loose free knife strokes
using purple and pink colors.

Abstract Beach Landscape "Cabo San Lucas" by California Janet Bludau

6" x 6" Oil
Vacation Sale!  $25
This painting is a combination of palette knife and brush.
I recently took a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with three other painters.
We thought we would get a LOT of painting done.
Instead...... we spent a LOT of time on the lounge chairs and in the pool!
It was very, very warm and we just could not lift the palette knife........
We had a great time.
Come up with an excuse for a vacation - you will be glad you did :)

I am very happy with my work today.  I gave myself an assignment  to limit the number of tubes of paint I use, get to my point more directly- that is, not using a lot of paint, create depth, more design than realism  and employ a system of color based upon  dark  moving forward ,  yellow being the first color to be lost in depth and blue the last.  I think I can be happy for today.

CONTEMPORARY ROOSTER by OLGA WAGNER

I can't believe that it has been almost 2 months since I posted anything. My painting in the past couple of months has been pretty sparse...To be truthful it's been almost non-existent... I was offered an awesome Software Development employment opportunity and have been working really hard to get myself up to speed on the latest Data Center Protocols, such as FCoE and LISP.  Now that I have gained the necessary confidence at work, I can get back to painting on a regular basis...FINALLY!

This little rooster has been hanging around on my easel for a few weeks now. I started him about a month ago and was waiting for my painting MOJO to return to finish him...

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" by Niki Gulley

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" ©2012 by Niki Gulley
Four 36" x 36" canvases to form a 72" x 72" quadriptych • original textured oil painting
or
Enhanced Canvas Prints - four 20" x 20" canvases to form a 40" x 40" quadriptych

In this painting, I wanted you to feel like a little kid again – laying on the ground and staring up into the treetops without a care in the world. I hope you experience the joy of being surrounded by nature and the beauty in this autumn kaleidoscope of colors.

I have received so many requests that I am now offering canvas prints of "Kaleidoscope of Dreams." Four 20" x 20" canvases are stretched on 3/4 inch stretcher bars with the image continuing around the edges to form a 40" x 40" quadriptych that does not need to be framed, just like the original . I have also added thick paint in some of the leaves and trunks to add even more texture and making each print one of a kind. Finally, I have coated the canvases with a UV varnish to protect the paintings. The canvases can be hung right up next to each other or spread apart by a few inches to come out to a maximum of 45" x 45", for only $895. I can also make other sizes or stretch Kaleidoscope of Dreams on deep 1 and 1/2 inch stretcher bars for an additional fee. Please contact me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information or to order "Kaleidoscope of Dreams."

Close up detail of the canvas prints with thick paint added to some of the leaves and trunks.

One of the canvases in the set of four showing the painting wrapping around the edges so that it can be hung as is without a frame.
