I added great swirls of texture to the canvas before painting, trying to capture the feel of flowers swaying in the breeze.
Can you tell I was facing east when I took this shot? In Colorado (at least where I was) when you face west you see the Rockies, when you face east, you see the prairie.

"Fancy Dance" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink
Okay,
I'll be up front. I do not plan to sell this painting. It was
extremely time consuming to paint, full of detail, which is not my usual
modus operandus. I went to the Northern Colorado Pow Wow a couple of
weeks ago with my husband and then with my young granddaughter. I love a
pow wow. The color, the spirit, the dancing, the drumming, nothing is
quite like it. So I attempted to capture a second of the fancy dance, I
was diligent in my effort, and I am so happy with it! Yaay!

"Southwest Panorama in Reds" by Karla Nolan, watercolor on paper
There is something about the colors of the cliffs, hills, mesas, and mountains in the Southwest United States that is so intriguing to me. There is no one shade of red involved, instead there are underlying purples, oranges, yellows, browns. Usually there is a bright blue sky with incoming storms fully in view when observing the clouds. I love it here in Colorado and also seeing the view in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.

The dark silhouette of the foothills and mountains, the warmth leaving the skies, nightfall is ahead. What does any of this have to do with sorbets, the light treat between meal courses? Nothing! My
first attempt at painting with oil pastels. A repeat subject. Red
Mountain the southwestern part of the state of Colorado. I painted with
soft pastels for years and occasionally yearn to return to them.
However, oil pastels beckoned because we were going on vacation and they
were easier to haul. Yet another experiment for me. And since I am
crazy over this particular subject, it was a fun and very educational
experience. I just love Colorado!

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset. I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered. a sunset fan, I have found that there are so many colors in the clouds
and they change so quickly, sometimes one has to make choices in what to
represent. Coral colors in the clouds seem to move through the skies
fast, they're hard to catch with a camera for a reference photograph.
So, what does an artist do? She uses her artistic license, of course!

painted this sunset a while back with my handy palette knives and
couldn't decide on a name for it. Looking at it in different lighting
situations, I kept notice how sparkly it was, a high gloss varnish added
to the colors greatly. Thus the name was born: "Sparkly Western
Sunset" -- because that is what it is, full of life and color! A sweet

I love painting the skies. I don't like early morning, however, and have missed many a pretty dawn here in Colorado. Silhouettes of bushes and trees have always intrigued me. Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

"I Want to Live Here!" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting
Colorado
is my favorite state in this country. Not only was I born here but I
plan to die here. Fort Collins, here in the northern part of the state,
is my "little slice of paradise". Life here is good. We have the
plains, the high prairie, the mountains, the rugged and rocky terrain of
the western part of the state, also. I feel very fortunate. The
paintings says it all.
