Santa Barbara Dreaming by Deborah Harold

Santa Barbara, California is one of my most favorite places.
The tile roofs, beautiful architecture, rolling hills and the ever-present Pacific Ocean all blend into this heavenly place. I love to paint this beautiful spot.
I have done so many times but they have sold. I now need to get busy and paint more to post here and on my web site. For more of my work please see Deborahharold.com.

Can't believe it's actually been since the 19th when I last posted. Last week was a whirlwind of prep for the show that I hung in downtown Orlando. Much, much more involved than I anticipated. But well worth it. I hung between 35 & 40 pieces. It's a good looking show. It'll be up until the end of July, but being that it's in a high security county building, the only way to see it is by appt./tour. Let me know if you're in town and would like to peruse. Be glad to meet you down there. Now then - back to work! Sometimes it's OK to leave the white of the painting surface showing through, and sometimes it's just too distracting. You really have to knock it down to see where you're at with the remaining shapes of color. Can't judge accurately with bright specks flickering all around. Notice that the black bathing suit on the right side woman is actually quite light in value - and totally not black. In fact, it's more of a dark mauve. But it reads as black. A good thing to know. I loved this painting of Potthast's and really was looking forward to delving into the color study. The difference in the skin tones of the man vs. the women - the women have a much softer glow of color to them. It's a lovely creamy pink/yellow/white that didn't look right on the man. His skin has a bit of a harsher feel to it because of the color being more saturated.

Memorial Day Mist 2011 by Roxanne Steed

"Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves."
-Albert Einstein

6"x6" oil on gessoed masonite archival panel

This morning I set out to paint my annual 'Memorial Day' painting, with the bunting on my front fence....when thunder started rolling. The skies were already dark, but I thought I could get a small painting in before anything blew through. Well, the wind picked up, too. So I picked up my gear & headed to the front porch where I could just paint another section of the garden. Glad I did, I wasn't painting very long before a light rain started falling.

The day did redeem itself, the sun came out in late afternoon, and I am getting ready to cook for some good friends who are coming over this evening.

Yes, I've been away for almost two weeks now, no blogging or painting happening here. Like Einstein says in the quote above, there are things you just need to give full attention to. I've been down at my mom's house in Florida, helping her move to a smaller place. She's moved to smaller digs in a retirement community, and the house she's leaving is where we grew up, she'd been there for forty-three years. It felt so strange to say good-bye to the place. But mom is ready, and chose the place where her new apartment is, saying she wished she had done this last year. And as one dear friend reminded me, "Home is where your mom is" (thanks Norma!).

Looks like it will be a very busy week. Tuesday, I'm headed to a plein-air paint out in Danbury, CT at Tarrywile Park and Mansion. Hoping to get some good painting time in this week! More about the show and sale in my upcoming blog-notes!

This painting is available in my DailyPainters.com gallery. (will show up Tuesday morning)

Dragonfly Dreams by Kay Wyne

Dragonfly Dreams
30" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This abstract evolved after going through several different stages. When I first started this painting, I though I wanted to paint an abstract. Then at one point it was going to be a horizon series painting. You can see where the horizon line is...and then after putting some color on the the canvas, I saw a dragonfly and proceeded to incorporate that image along with some geometric shapes, lines and texture. I used brushes, palette knives and oil sticks on this painting. I like the shape and size of the canvas...thanks for viewing this blog! Have a great day on this Memorial Day. I will be in the studio painting away!

Between Portland and Eugene-Janet Bludau

Oregon is such a beautiful state.  I took several photos on one of my drives back to the airport after visiting my daughter at school.  This 6x6" oil was juried into the Higbee 6" Squared show a month ago and is a combination of brushwork and pallete knife.  I am showing it both unframed and then framed in a floater from Art and Frame.

Splash is a tribute to my beautiful niece, Robin, who graduated from high school last night. She is the only baby in our family, so this was a real celebration. I don't think I've ever been so proud in my whole life! Robin is such a level headed young lady, and has already got her sights on College, with the next four years mapped out. The first two years she'll attend junior college near her home, then the second two years she'll stay with Carlos and I and attend North Texas State University (which happens to have a great band program). She wants to become a pharmacist, or work in the biochemistry field. Can you imagine? Where did all those brains come from?

Passage of Illumination oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Passage of Illumination” ©2011 Niki Gulley
48” x 60” textured oil on canvas

Wander down this path that beckons you and lift your eyes heavenward to that cobalt vault lined by a rainbow of vivid greens and golds and gleaming crimson, purposely choosing these warm vibrant colors to suggest a hopeful future. Like an ancient chorus these joyful trees sing with dazzling colors, a call and respond to each other across the enticing path that traces verses of light and dark, hue and color, an alluring siren song leading you into the depths of this radiant, vanishing horizon. A painting rich in color and light, joy and energy its double bowed composition gently leads gently you into this magical, blissful destination.

Balboa Island Dinghy(s)-Janet Bludau

Two different paintings of the same subject.  The top painting is 8x8 oil on board and the bottom one is 12x12 oil on board.  I took this photo on Balboa Island in Newport Beach one day when I was walking. I don't know who the boat belongs to but it is certainly someone's old friend, taking them from the island to the peninsula and back, over and over again - Old Faithful they could have been titled.  If you have any comments on the difference of the two, I would love it hear from you.

New Textured Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Enjoying the View” ©2011 Niki Gulley
48" x 30" textured oil on canvas

Gentle hill and valley give way to a view triumphant; a view of steep, purple mountains crusted with snow, the soft morning light diffuses across the valley. A litany of lights and darks, greens and golds cross hatch the foothills below. White barked Aspens, straight and narrow guard the riot of color beneath them as a golden promontory rises up in the east. Tranquility and joy abound, a sense of peace and serenity flows from this one mystical moment captured forever.

'Augusta 12th' - Golf Course Series

"Augusta 12th"

This is my original impression palette knife painting of Augusta National's 12th hole.  I use a wet-on-wet impasto technique to create the layers and depth of the landscape. The texture is heavy and the colors deep.  And realistically, it could take months to dry.

Attending the Masters is on my list of things to do before I die.  Who knows, maybe the gentlemen at the beautiful Augusta will take a trade; Painting for a ticket. Going once... going twice... I guess I'll keep my options open.

Pebble Beach 7th

'Pebble Beach 7th'
24" x 36" x 1"
*Available for collection

I love to golf.  To me, there is nothing (aside from painting) that clears my head better than 18 holes on a sunny day.  I'm not thinking about the groceries I need to stop and get or what book report I need to remind one of the kids to finish up; all I'm thinking is it's a 7 iron to the center of the green.

I wish I could say I'm a scratch golfer but my handicap card has a few double digits on it.  My local club is Hobble Creek.  It's fantastic!  Nestled in the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon your surrounded by blankets of trees, the sound of running water and the occasional wild turkey or deer making it's way across the fairway.  One Saturday morning, I remember teeing off the first hole and a moose came strutting across the fairway.  He causally wandered his way into the pond and dunked his head in the water.  It was so beautiful!

In honor of my love of golf I started this new series this week.

Palette Knife Paiting by Leslie Saeta - SOLD

"Moving Forward"
Oil, 6" x 6"

This painting holds a very special place in my heart. It was the first painting I completed after my mother-in-law died so I spent a lot of time coming up with the right title for this painting. I almost didn't put it up for sale but when it sold right away to a family friend I knew it had found the right home.
I paint exclusively with a palette knife as I am not sure I would know how to paint with a brush. Sounds funny ... I know ... The colors in this one are some of my favorites.

A tough study to say the least. What did I learn and what that I already knew is reinforced? Red is a tricky color to settle in with; a speck as tiny as a pinpoint can affect the rest of a small painting; a reflection doesn't always need the object that's making it visible in the image; a painting needs areas of play/texture and areas of rest/smooth (not necessarily half of each); bows are like frosting, and no one wears them at the beach nowadays!

Two Colorado oil landscape paintings by Becky Joy

8x10 oil The Ranch Road $600. click to purchase

Clear Creek, oil 8x10 $600. Click to purchase.

Well, I know that I made it through  the day. How about you? Did you see anything happen out of the ordinary? I thought I would spend posibly my last day doing what I love to do and of course, that is to paint and paint and paint. Both of these painting are from scenes in Colorado. I started with a photo of a dirt road and then my imagination took over. Where should that road go? To a ranch, of course. That seemed logical to me, although it's obviously not a well traveled road.

The second painting is from a photo that I took at Piney Lake close to Aspen, CO. I've always loved the stream with the clear water and the rocks and muddy bottom showing through the water. And I know it was muddy. I had to step into it with my bare feet and try it out. Of course, it's cold mountain water and mud that I was sucked into. I was painting at this location about 4 years ago and took some photos as the day progressed. The plein air painting is long gone. I changed the scene a little by opening it up in the background and adding the mountains. I felt that the shape of the stream begged for more distance and atmosphere. So, I obliged.

I hope that you are enjoying the photos of the progression of my paintings in my videos and previous posts. I will have to post more of them.

I'll talk to you all tomorrow. I'm assuming that we have a tomorrow. I know that I am looking forward to it.

Upcountry Pool- Janet Bludau

Visitors at art shows love to ask artists what their favorite painting is.  I almost always get asked this.  There usually isn't one favorite that I have but maybe 3 - 4 that I like the best for different reasons.  And usually I don't have 1 or 2 of them at the show because they are at home, hanging on a wall because I am not yet ready to part with them or maybe the piece was too large to haul to the show.  This is one of my favorites and yet it really is so simple, I find myself a bit embarrassed to admit this.    Maybe it is the red peeking out ( I do love to do this) or the blues playing off the green which has always been one of my favorite color combos.  Growing up, my parent's living room was done in exactly these colors and I have always loved it.  The "avocado" green of the 50's-60's - I think they had those fake grapes that you now see again in retro shops, sitting on the coffee table and the blue upholstered, streamlined "Danish" chairs.  I would love to have those chairs now.  They would once again be very cool! So there you have it - one of my favorites.  This did not sell at the latest show, the Balboa Island Artwalk.  I am going to frame it for the next show I do and see what happens.  6 x 6 oil

Fall Aspen block in and finish by Becky Joy Fine Art

Fall Aspen 10x8 "the block in"

The finished "Fall Aspen" oil. It's still 10x8.

Its been a while since I painted some aspen trees. I always feel a little trepidation when tackling something that I don't feel real comfortable with. I get that lost feeling, like I'm unsure of myself.

I've painted a lot of all aspen, but as I said, it's been a while. Several years I was showing in a gallery in Aspen, CO (they are no longer in business). They asked me to paint about 12 paintings of fall aspen for a show in the fall, of course. I complied, which is normal with me. I hurried and painted 12 paintings of various sizes, the largest, I think was 36x48 and shipped them off in about a month's time. They had the show and sold a few, then that was the end of it. I think they were in the back room for the winter. I tried talking to them telling them that I could paint something besides fall aspen, but that was all they were interested in. After very little comunication and difficulty in dealing with the gallery, I pulled out of there and that was the end of my time in Aspen. I've since painted a few plein air fall aspen and a couple of studio ones. Maybe I'll do more now. I really enjoyed the color in this painting.

I put together a video yesterday of the sunset painting that I painted yesterday. Oh, I guess I didn't post it. I'll do that now along with the video.
