The blue pergola this rose and the pink rose grow on was built by my husband. It took quite some time to persuade him but I am so pleased they are built. They provide the perfect support and backdrop to the roses.

Garden Flowers Inspiration - Red Cimbing Roses

A climbing red rose.
These roses are beautifully formed and have such a wonderful scent.
St Paul, the area I live in, was renowned for its roses. Apparently the hillsides were all covered with rose nurseries and supplied the perfume trade in Grasse. It's surprising that they grow so well as roses are not normally associated with a Mediterranean climate due to the hot summers. We do have quite a bit of rain in April and often into May which probably bolsters them up for their moment of glory.

Beautiful colorful roses painted in an abstract way with a cream/blue/purple background. The thickly applied knife strokes add texture and movement to the flowers as can be seen in the close-up phot0s - a modern use of impressionism.

This painting is full of life and will look good in any setting and in either a contemporary or traditional decor. An ideal gift for gardeners, flower arrangers or just flower lovers (and who isn't?).

Last
month a local village held it's annual rose festival. This area is well
known for growing flowers for the perfume industry (Grasse is not far
away), and this village is renown for growing roses and extracting the
oil.
Walking
through the village, this beautiful rose was making a huge statement in
someone's garden, I was very envious. I couldn't resist taking a few photos. I also came
away with another climbing rose and several other plants for the
garden.

Today was the first day of my Lafayette, Louisiana workshop, with 17 very talented ladies from Mississippi, Alabama, and across Louisiana. We had so many flowers to choose from, today's paintings featured purple tulips, white hydrangeas, and blue delphiniums. Visit my art blog today to see photos from class. While I'm teaching painting, the gals are teaching me some wonderful local sayings that I'll be sharing with you soon. I have to run, we are heading out to the Blue Dog Cafe for some awesome cajun food. Come on out and meet us there - If you hurry, I'll save you a bite of key lime pie....

I've learned to not always listen to the weatherman. They predicted it would rain all morning and begin to clear in the afternoon. I awoke to find it perfectly sunny and clear this morning, but I had cut these roses the night before. Of course I was determined to paint them. I had re-arranged a bit of furniture in the studio (which I have pretty much abandoned all summer and painted out-side) so I could have just the right natural light fall on them from my north-facing windows (which allows nice even light in all day). Then by afternoon, there came the pouring rains! Glad I didn't listen to that turned around forecast!

Layered Love - A rose for Valentines Day!
This is my first ever painting of a rose. Somehow, this gorgeous flower has always intimidated me with all its layers of petals. I never thought I could get a rose to look like one! This time I went for it though, as part of a challenge at Daily Paintworks. Was great fun and much much easier than I thought! I was toying with the idea of oils vs acrylics but then decided to go with Acrylics itself, entirely with the knife. And I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

One of my collectors posts the most wonderful quotes on Facebook... this is one she listed that I had not heard before & thought was profoundly beautiful. Thanks Jamie, for sharing these wonderful thoughts! It goes so well with the story I'm about to share!
I had promised at some point I would share the 'big reveal' of a recent commission. This was a very special occasion and meant a lot to me to be able to fulfill this. A dear friend of ours was retiring from the Navy after many years in the Navy's submarine force. He wanted to commission a painting as a gift to his wife (as I well know, when the service member serves, the whole family serves). She is a master gardener and for the longest time the running joke was, "I want to live some where long enough to grow asparagus." (as apparently it takes at least 3 years to get a decent crop of it). As submarine service members, we are usually transferred at the 2 or 3 year point to the next duty station. So....in this painting, he requested a still-life with these 3 elements - red roses for love, an anchor symbolizing the Navy, and of course asparagus- symbolizing the stability from moving they hope to now have! Ohhhh- this would be a challenge to put these three together, but once I had sketched out several ideas, I could easily see what composition would work best. I am so excited to share this picture and story with you...and am honored to be a part of such a wonderful gift for a couple that is very special to our family! "Fair winds and following seas!", and all our best wishes in this 'new season' in their lives!
Today's painting "A New Season", and is an 8"x6" oil on oil-primed linen mounted on museum quality board. It is a commissioned work for dear family friends we are proud to have served with in the US Navy!
Hope you get a chance to get outside and smell the flowers today! ****Tomorrow I hope to show you what I pulled in from my garden! ....woohoo, what a bounteous harvest!! Yeah, gotta love summer!
