It's children who keep us young. Even when they're not so young themselves ... or maybe especially because they're not so young themselves! My son, who is not that far off 40 years old, has moved on from keeping me up to date with the latest in music, to keeping me up to date with what I can do with Photoshop.

Here's one of the results. I took my "Forever Blowing Bubbles" oil painting and turned it into neon line art ... such fun! Both are now available on Etsy.

"Wild Profusion" by Lynda Cookson

"Wild Profusion" grew on me gradually. I challenged myself to work with a different colour palette as well as a longer (less rectangular) canvas than I usually use ... and to begin with the changes were too much for me! We humans are not particular to change, are we! However, I lived with it for a while until I reached the point I was happy to put it out there.

Collage of Ballet Shoe Paintings by Lynda Cookson

Swishing along with my painting collages for the moment, as a teenager there was no way on earth my paternal parent was going to let me take art lessons or art as a subject at school - so my creative life began with music and dancing. Not ballet dancing ... ballroom dancing. I went on, in my early 20s, to open my first business - a Dance Studio where I taught basic ballroom dancing and, because it was the early 80s ... disco dancing! (I know as you read that, that your arm shot up in the air pointing straight at the ceiling and you thought of John Travolta!!!)

With dancing in mind, I produced a series of ballet shoe paintings.

Here is another of the paintings done for my 'New Year's Challenge' which I am still doing, 6 months later! Anyone who read my earlier blog about this may remember that this was my challenge to myself to paint something with figures/portrait as every other painting. This challenge is taking an interesting turn - I started off finding the figures and portraits quite hard work, and the landscapes or seascapes in between as being a rest - but, here's the thing, the figures are getting easier and I am less interested in the landscapes!

This painting is another from my series of paintings of Piccadilly Station, Manchester, England. But this is probably the sort of scene you could see in many stations now - always someone checking a phone or a tablet while waiting to do the commute! The painting is called 'Piccadilly Station, No 2'.

The painting is totally with a knife, although I did underpaint with a brush initially.

Peach Bloomers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack up my favorite vases, along with buckets of fresh flowers for my Valentine's workshop this weekend. I have so many prizes to give away I had to buy a roll of those ticket stub thingies. Amongst the goodies are four perfect men who shall be going home with four lucky students (won't their husbands be surprised!). These perfect men who are prizes are decadently rich and very attractive. I certainly hope there won't be any hair pulling or name calling when they make their appearance! As I was trundling my cart filled with pink, white and fuschia roses to my car today, a cart which also held a bran new vase, it occurred to me it is a wonderful thing to be able to buy flowers as a business expense! My studio is so filled with roses it smells like a wedding in here. I keep expecting someone in a frilly gown to come marching in flinging petals hither and yon. Instead, I hear a thundering herd approaching, and into my studio running full tilt are four fat, happy, out of breath pugs, ready for second breakfast at 10 am sharp. It's good to be a stay at home artist, painting happy colors all day and spoiling funny faced dogs.

Looking for the perfect man? Some lucky lady will be taking him home from my Valentine's Party workshop next week in Irving, Texas! My studio storage room is packed to the gills with prizes and we'll be painting fresh flowers and French landscapes, and sharing a French picnic lunch Saturday. In addition to gift baskets and couture wear for everyone, there will also be a visit from that good looking aforementioned guy! Stay tuned for the photographic evidence...

Can you tell what song has been going through my mind all day? I had quite a bit of fun with Raindrops on Roses, after filling the canvas with a bit of riotous color, I then gelled up my paint super thick and applied a layer in palette knife and broad brush to finish off the highlights. There is just something about texture and color together that makes the heart happy....

Winter Garden Tulips is the final painting I'll be able to squeeze out of my exhausted studio model flowers. As you can see in the photo, several collapsed on the tabletop shortly after the painting was finished. You just can't find good flower help anymore, I tell ya!!

I was rushing a bit to finish this painting, as my studio models were dipping, bowing, and few were actually fainting in the midst of their posing session. I offered them a glass of fresh water, fanned them and told them they looked stunningly beautiful under the bright lights, but, alas, some of them simply had no stamina. This is what happens when you starve yourself, living only on saltines and cashews, I told them quite sternly. I'll be curious to see if any of them get rest tonight, you know how models are, out partying all night with all the other beautiful flowers while the rest of us sit home on the couch watching Championship Jeopardy re-runs...

Out of the Blue Delphiniums and Iris is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and the last hurrah of the batch of fresh Japanese iris and blue delphiniums. The little petals were making plopping noises the whole time I was painting them under the studio light, as they fell to the tabletop. They posed bravely and stood steadfastly under duress, and deserve to be remembered for all they gave in the name of color! We salute you little flowers. Oh my, it must be getting late, where did that come from?

Violet Ballet is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I just got a big shipment of deep gallery wrap canvases, and had been wanting to try something in the 16X16 size for quite some time. I love the size, it's just right for big, bold color! It's hard to get a good photograph of a palette knife painting, the paint is so thick and textured. On the surface, it looks like icing on a cake, if one were to eat a purple and blue cake, that is... 

One of the things I focused on in this composition was to place a strong horizontal element (the deep dark blue purple) in order to counter all of the vertical elements (the dancing irises and delphiniums). The horizontal strip of dark purple also helps to push the little grouping of white irises and green stems forward, adding depth and a bit more drama to the painting.

 Garden Party Iris is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. One of my friends asked me if I paint every day. The answer is yes, unless I'm on an airplane on my way to teach a workshop, I paint every day. I've been painting every day for about 7 years now. I have a condition called the Daily Painters Compulsion. I'm pretty sure I should be on some sort of strong medication for it.

Today I went to the store for lemons and found yet another new vase. Then I saw these iris, and then the delphiniums, and then bunches and bunches of fresh peonies. Then I saw a really cute green roller bag I could use on the plane to stuff my treasures in for my trips to and from workshops. I won't tell you what my grocery bill ended up being, for that bag of lemons, but let's just say this is how things rapidly spiral out of control, when I'm allowed to go shopping with no adult supervision whatsoever.

The new sparkly wonderful vase makes its debut!
