BECKY JOY desert palo verde tree at sunset
I have this painting, 16x20 on canvas panel, listed on my website for sale for $1200. Click here to purchase
I painted this tree from my imagination. I have done plenty of them in plein air so I am familiar with them. I love the free form of the tree which makes it a perfect subject for using the imagination. I start with a dark form for the overall design, then a lot of back and forth with positive and negative shapes. I had a lot of fun playing with the color also. It is backlit, so the warmer colors on the tree peak out from behind and the front, away from the light source, is cooler in color.

Aspen Tree Painting Giclee "Autumn Gold" by Jill Saur
I wrote about this painting a few weeks ago on my blog and a new patron in Hollywood, Fla. ordered a hand-embellished giclee of it. I want to show some enlarged images of the thickly textured paint that I added to this piece. It looks like a new original. I had a lot of fun working on this. Since the original is sold, I know that I will probably have to do this for myself one day because this is one of my favorite paintings. This giclee of "Autumn Gold" is 30"x40".

Mi Casa es Su Casa by Pamela Blaies
Bouganvillea and a Blue Door
14" x 11"
Oil on Canvas
There is a common spanish saying, "mi casa es su casa." It literally means "my house is your house," but is meant to offer warm hospitality. Brightly painted buildings and beautiful flowers are found everywhere in Mexico. Memories of my visits there are filled with color and my mind often drifts back on sunny summer days. This painting, full of texture and color, offers a cheery welcome.

Newport Harbor from a Kayak by Deborah Harold
While kayaking with my family I took many photos and this is one that I painted.
The angel is different as we were on the water and there was no sun or shadows so I made up my own. I'm happy with the feeling you get from the water.
This 8x8 is entirely painted with a palette knife.
Framed $300

Have a great day!
I will be forever grateful that I can paint and hope there is a studio in the next life.
$1 STARTING BID, HALF-DOME BY TOM BROWN
Call me crazy, but I thought it would be fun to start this auction at just a buck to shake things up. Let’s see what happens.
Half Dome in Yosemite National Park is a national landmark. I did this 6x8-inch painting as a study for a larger studio piece awhile back. I liked the way it turned out and it’s been living on my studio wall until now. Today I decided to put it on eBay and let it find a new home.
Here’s a link if you’d like to bid:

Robin's Nest..Small (6x6) palette knife painting by Peg Whitacre
After painting a 9x12 version of the robin's nest I chose to make a smaller one as well. For some unknown reason both these paintings receive a lot of attention (no buyers yet but I live in hope!) both online and at shows. Something about painting things from nature seems to connect with people. I plan to try some different types of nests as well as the birds who occupy them. Right now I have a pair of Tree Swallows nesting in a box on my deck. They are not very welcoming to humans! Trying to sit outside or allow the cat to play on the deck can be hazardous to both our health! Having been dive-bombed several times I figured it's easier to wait this out than to be chased from my own property. If they ever show their young'uns I will be sure to photograph them. Enjoy the robin's nest!

"Dancing on Water" textured water lilies oil painting by Niki Gulley
“Dancing on Water” © 2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” • textured oil on wrap around canvas
Sunlight sparkles across aqua blue water, diamonds of purple glitter the pond’s surface; water lilies lift their faces toward the sky. Golden sunlight filters through the brambles and ferns, a touch of cardinal red peeks through purple and pink foliage while azure heavens reflect in the water. Placing the lilies in arcing patterns and staggering where they are floating about, adds to the flow and energy in the moment, and gives you the sense that they are gently dancing on water.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Original Palette Knife Bird painting by Nithya Swaminathan
I was looking for a break from my figure subjects and came across a few lovely bird references. I thought they would look awesome if done with the knife, but boy did it require patience or what! I went in for a detailed approach, so that the form of the bird, its feathers were all quite clear. I really like how it turned out! Let me know what you think.

Mud Bird on the Deck Rail - Sparrow in the Sun by Roxanne Steed
4"x4" oil on gessoed masonite archival panel
"I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn."
- Henry David Thoreau
It's funny where & when ideas show up that excite us visually as artists....and the connection from them to other ideas we've been mulling over. Eating my lunch yesterday at the dining room table, I was gazing out at the deck to watch the birds eat their lunch at the feeder outside, when this little sparrow lands on the deck railing perhaps to look at the line up to the feeder? The sun was brilliant outside and just caught her in such wonderful light, it reminded me of the '100 Mud-Heads' project that Frank Gardner is working on, inspired by Charles Hawthorne's Mud Head paintings. I've been wanting to recruit some of my neighbors for a mud-head project of my own, but this little bird in the brilliant sun light made me put down my sandwich and grab a pen. An envelope on the table in front of me was the closet piece of paper. As long as the bird stood on the deck, I would sketch him. They were like quick gesture drawings, and I was enchanted by her poses.
Painting is unframed, a perfect little size to place nearby on a shelf. Price includes shipping/insurance to continental US. Please visit my DailyPainters.com store to purchase.
high desert plein air oil landscape painting by BECKY JOY
These two plein air painting, 6x8 are available on my website for $350. each. Click here to purchase.
I painted both of these on my plein air trip to Zion. The canyon piece was the first of the day in a marathon painting day from dawn to dusk, too tired for a nocturnal piece.
I painted a larger painting today from the canyon piece. It has taken me several days. With the heat at 115 degrees the last two days in Phoenix, I have found it difficult to have the energy to do anything. I'll just keep at it, just slower.
When I was in Coeur d'Alene, I had an art rep approach me. I have wavered on how I feel about it. At times I think it would be great to have someone take over part of the business from me, but on the other hand, I feel a loss of control and not sure if it would be in the direction that I want to go. It has been and continues to be so important to me to improve as an artist and I'm not sure that that can happen with a rep.
Well, talk to you all tomorrow.

Summer is surely here. Time does fly - and the month of June is nearly ended. I asked a friend who composes fantastic R&B and soft rock music if I could have a snippet of his beautiful song titled "Gabriel's Big Day" to add to a video of my paintings. The melody is so soothing it seemed appropriate for beach and water scenes.
FYI - if you liked the song Bobby Mack will let you download a full length version if you send him a message via Facebook he will share :) http://www.facebook.com/rmackb

Gone to Rome Italy
Late June is a great time to visit! Toured Vatican city and it was quite impressive! I am taking hundreds of photos and numerous sketches of Italy. All the details of Italy are beautiful and I can't wait to paint them all! I've been quite inspired by the beautiful artwork and amazing architecture. Now we are in Amalfi and Ravello, on our way to Positano and Capri! More photos soon!

"Art and music are to my soul, as food and water are to my body. I believe that they are two of God's most precious gifts to His children. As the author and giver of creativity, through these gifts, He has given us a portion of Himself. He created the very first canvas, magnificently painted it, and brought it to life" I am a full time artist, dividing my time between painting and teaching in my Colorado studio. Having painted on most every surface imaginable, at this time I work primarily on canvas, board, and paper. Though my style remains quite diverse, I believe I have the heart of an Abstract Expressionist, or even more accurately, an Action Expressionist, as I am most definitely an "action painter". Each painting is a journey , dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions, be they happy, sad, peaceful or frenzied. It is a mysterious relationship, and is thrilling when the painting finally reveals itself, and our private journey becomes a story to share.

Pool Reflection - Janet Bludau
12" x 12"
Oil on Archival Raymar Panal
I have a series of pool paintings I am doing.
I don't know if I am inspired by the art of David Hockney or by all the swimming pools of my youth!
The tree in this piece is painted with palette knife strokes but the rest of the painting is brushed. Again, the balance of the smooth and rough is one of the qualities that I really am drawn to in many paintings.
Painting may be purchased via my website: http://janetbludau.fineartstudioonline.com/

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

Today my husband helped me make a smaller version of the knife that I always work with. It's the flat edge, rectangular shape that I love. But the smallest that I've ever found is still a little more than a quarter inch wide. Very hard to get into the smaller spaces with it. My new knife has a width of about 2/8 ths. Perfect for tight spaces! I changed the composition just a little with this one. All of these studies have been smaller passages from Potthast's paintings, and most of the areas I've selected have had balanced compositional elements. I SO wanted to paint this pooch, but the square composition that I wanted to use was weak as it was. I moved the dog in a bit, and added the large hill in the background. I still feel some emptiness right in the middle of the painting and I'm trying to decide what to incorporate, if anything. Keeping things fresh is important though and I hate to go back in and risk getting a blip of something too distracting.

I was born in Essex, England in 1944 and emigrated to Canada in 1957, residing first in Toronto and moving to Calgary in 1960. Now residing in Kelowna, British Columbia. Early influences on my style and career included J M W Turner and John Constable.
Later, the work of the late French minimalist Nicolas De Stael played the most significant role in my development as a painter. My landscape paintings are abstracted to simple forms relying on texture and tonal variations to create drama.
My still-life and flower works are painted with a palette knife and sometimes brush in acrylic either on canvass or panels. I build the shapes of the abstracted flowers, not being at all concerned with the type of flower, by layering subtle changes in tone and colour value, creating my own style of still-life. Most of my landscapes are painted with a brush although occasionally a palette knife may be used for effect.
My paintings hang in corporate and private collections across the world. I've had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the USA.
I'm a member of Landscape Artists International and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

zion oil plein air landscape paintings by BECKY JOY
I just got back from my trip to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for the Oil Painters of America show, then on to Whitefish, MT for some visiting, hiking and a little painting. The last leg of the trip I went to Mt. Carmel, UT where I met my friend, Deb Groesser, to paint in the Zion, Mt. Carmel, and Escalante area for three days. We stayed at an artists retreat in Mt. Carmel, which was Maynard Dixon's home. It was a wonderful place including the grounds.
The first painting was from the town of Springville, Utah at a park late in the afternoon. The only light left was hitting the tops of the hills, lighting up the rocks and trees, some of my favorite lighting to paint. It's a rush, literally. The painting measures 6x8 and is for sale on my website for $300.
This second painting measures 8x10 and is for sale on my website for $400. I painted this painting from the Maynard Dixon property in the morning looking across the road at Mt. Carmel. The warm colors of the sunlit rocks brings that part of the painting to your center of interest. I echoed the color in the house and some in the foreground trees. The mountains have so much color it is hard to stay on task and keep the shapes simple and not break it up with too much stuff going on.
I have more photos that I will be posting, but I also have some photoshopping to do and a few touch ups on some of the paintings. So, I'll talk to you all later.

Textured Poppy painting by Niki Gulley
“Dreams Revisted” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 48” textured acrylic on canvas
In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feeling using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy, so I chose to paint this landscape at dusk as the sun is starting to set over the distant hills to add to that mood. I love the wildflower masses in the foreground creating waves of color, and the curving shapes adding to the sense of tranquility. I was mesmerized what the cinematography in the movie “What Dreams May Come” and my painting reminded me a little of those magical graphics, so I decided to title my piece the same.

Ahhh - yellow! An ever elusive color to get work with. Especially lemony yellows. One of the 'basic' and commonly used is cadmium yellow pale. I find it very much on the cool side, and often times unnatural looking. My preference is cad yellow medium, but I didn't have any. If you mix ochre with the pale, you'll get a close approximation and a warmer tone.

Trojan House by Deborah Harold
The colors of this palette knife work are the colors of the USC University in Southern California so I thought a play on words would get the attention of the Trojan Alumni who are virtually everywhere in Southern California.
The painting came together all at once, and I thought, well it looks like USC, the school that was my rival. I will need to do next a Bruin, UCLA painting. Time to get busy!
I will be forever grateful that I can paint and hope there is a studio in the next life.
Barn with Daisies and Wildflowers...Palette Knife Painting by Peg Whitacre
Old buildings always fascinate me and when they are surrounded in summer by beautiful wildflowers they seem to yell out...."photograph me!" or "paint me!" And so I did both. The combination of a group of falling down buildings, daisies and other wildflowers at their foundations, and a river running right past was good to ignore. This is a 6x6 painting full of color and texture provided nicely by the palette knife. Enjoy!
Careers in music, education and photography led me into the world of oil painting, which is a "daily" challenge to me.
Falling, Falling, Falling by Kay Wyne
Falling, Falling, Falling
This painting is signed and is drying....and it will need a frame. The canvas size is 18" x 24". I think a black floater frame might look really cool on this painting, but I will need to play around with some mouldings. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. I hope to post some more contemporary aspen paintings tomorrow.

Shortcut - Janet Bludau
6" x 6"
Oil on Panal
$75 Unframed
$150 in Floater Frame
This is a combination of brushwork and palette knife strokes. The fence is also done with a palette knife in case it doesn't show in the photo. I have left some of my underpainting showing through a bit in spots - I love this look. This is one of the pieces I am entering (image only so painting is available for purchase!) to be considered for a page in a landscape calendar. It will also be shown at an art show this Saturday in Newport Beach in a floater frame from Randy Higbee's Art and Frame. I can be emailed for an image of the frame or artwork within the frame.
My website is being reworked but it is together enough that I will post the link here if you want a look. Just know that its not all perfect and beautiful yet!

Buy ART - Aspen Tree Painting by Jill Saur
This 48"x36" acrylic painting on a wide border canvas is elegant, stunning, and always draws compliments from those who see it. I was inspired to paint this from viewing the aspens in Colorado in the early evening during Fall. Those who know me, know how much I love aspen trees. Once you have stood amongst a grove of white aspens, heard their quaking leaves, and felt the peaceful quiet of the forest, you will want to return often.
My aspen paintings give my patrons the opportunity to be reminded of this tree's majestic beauty. This original painting can be purchased at the Frameworks Gallery, in Marietta, GA.

This study seems to have the best of what I try for in a successful painting - most importantly the very loose knife work. The original painting of Potthast's has so much energy to it, and I wanted to try and convey that in my own style. The color mixing was key in terms of getting just the right ratio of pigment to walnut oil. Like I've said many times - if the paint is right, it's like doing a watercolor.

is an award winning artist who paints exclusively with a palette knife. She holds a fine art degree and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She began painting in oil again after taking a palette knife workshop through the Copley Society of Art in Boston and was immediately hooked. The thick, painterly, yet highly detailed strokes of color are trademarks of her style.
Amalfi Coast by Deborah Harold
The Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy is one of the most magical places on earth.
I ran across a photo from a trip and had to paint this beautiful place.
The colors of the Mediterranean are richer than the colors of the pacific and I had fun mixing a different palette for the water. I didn't want the sky to compete with the water so I made it a gentle faded white.
The is a 5x7 oil on panel and looks fabulous in a beautiful custom black frame.

New Textured Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley
“Autumn Splendor” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 48” textured oil on wrap around canvas
There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, clean bright skies overhead, a band of slender straight trucks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling tumble of green, crimson and gold.

Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I am taking note of how difficult it is to nail down a bluish purple that is spot on neutral in terms of warm/cool. Not easy! My favorite part of this painting is the legs of the little one on the right. Just enough of an indication that they are there. It's easy to get caught up in painting 'symbols' of what one thinks a common, easily recognizable thing looks like. And of course once your mind is in that mode and concentrating probably too hard on what you think you see, the harder it is to stop yourself. Particularly true in rendering faces!
