"Art and music are to my soul, as food and water are to my body. I believe that they are two of God's most precious gifts to His children. As the author and giver of creativity, through these gifts, He has given us a portion of Himself. He created the very first canvas, magnificently painted it, and brought it to life" I am a full time artist, dividing my time between painting and teaching in my Colorado studio. Having painted on most every surface imaginable, at this time I work primarily on canvas, board, and paper. Though my style remains quite diverse, I believe I have the heart of an Abstract Expressionist, or even more accurately, an Action Expressionist, as I am most definitely an "action painter". Each painting is a journey , dictated by primarily by my current thoughts and emotions, be they happy, sad, peaceful or frenzied. It is a mysterious relationship, and is thrilling when the painting finally reveals itself, and our private journey becomes a story to share.

A self-taught artist and a late bloomer. I began painting as an outlet while attending college, in mid-life. My field of study was demanding and stressful and I needed a creative outlet. I fell in love with the feel of the brush and paint as it flowed on the canvas. I continue to be blessed to study with some awesome gifted artists. The most important roles in my life, wife, mother and grandmother, I was a "early bloomer" but there are many joys in being a late bloomer. God has richly blessed me. I sing His praises through brush strokes and color.
"A Branch of Blooms" by Lynda Cookson
This is one from a few years back (sold) where the background was created using very thinned down oils poured and dripped. The flowers and vase are palette knife painted. It still makes me smile :-)

Abstract Painting, Small Abstract, Alcohol Inks, Experimenting
I am finally writing a post in my new home! It has been a long and stressful journey, from Melbourne, FL to Asheville NC. I know I am home, because I am finally painting, posting and doing all those art related activities that were a part of my life for 25 years. Welcome home!
This is an experiment with alcohol inks. I purchased the inks, as a change from my oils, but my move has gotten in the way of experimenting with them. I did find this little sample to be interesting and have lots of ideas on ways to use them in the future. Have you tried them? I am open to suggestions and techniques.
Thanks for visiting my blog today.

Abstract Seascape | Daily Painting | "Tropical Blues" by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil SOLD
When I lived close to the sea, I found that it turned up in my painting in both a representative and non-representative form. I guess this little daily painting falls somewhere between the two.
I painted this with a palette knife. I like texture and feel it adds additional interest to my art. I was thinking about the beautiful greens and blues of the tropical waters off the coast of Florida. Further south they turn the most amazing shades of azure, but that will be another painting.

Flipper Lives! Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Dolphin Giclee Print
This was a fun painting for me. Maybe it's the subject matter, but I smiled the whole time.
A few summers ago, we spent a few days in Key Largo, with our grandson. The one thing he was really looking forward to was swimming with the dolphins. He loved every minute of it and later told me he had met a life long goal by doing so. (He was 13).
While I was watching, I snapped this shot of one of the dolphins, and have had it on my list of subjects to paint for months.
Sometimes, many times, I find myself putting off certain subjects, afraid that I am not accomplished enough to do them justice. Such was the case here.
I am happy I finally gave it a try, and was pleased with the results. I will have to push myself more in the future, when I find myself backing off a subject that I am unfamiliar with.
Hope you have a great day!

Life is good in North Carolina, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Blue Ridge Highway, 6x8" Oil,
Last fall, we took a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a crisp, sunny day and my camera was busy clicking away.
Purchase a Giclee Print here It's hard to go wrong with a blue and yellow painting.....it just shouts "Cheerful". The background was painted with a brush, but I used a palette knife on the flowers and grasses. That's when it started to be really fun!

Sunflowers and farmhouse...the perfect pairing! daily painting, small oi painting, 6x8 oil painting
Sunflowers and farmhouses, the perfect pairing!
It is a cold, gray day, here in the mountains, and sunflowers are the perfect way to brighten things up.
Both sunflowers and farmhouses, are not uncommon, here in the mountains. It's hard not to smile when I look at sunflowers.
Yesterday, we drove over the mountains to Gatlinburg. I am happy to report that things are looking up there. Spring is taking over, renewal is everywhere. Yes, there are still signs of the devastating fires from two years ago, but the mood is upbeat and the tourists are there.
Have a wonderful day!

Tropical Fish Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Palette Knife Painting
A few years ago, we visited the coral reef off Key Largo. Although I get sea sick, when the boat is not under power, I still enjoyed seeing the colorful tropical fish, and of course, the trip out and back.
Beautiful turquoise waters, stunning landscapes, fabulous wildlife.....the perfect day.
I am enjoying these palette knife paintings immensely. I have been so intense about my brush work, that I had ignored the palette knife for months. Now that I am working with it again, I am enjoying the freedom it brings.
