Nightfall, by NY artist Celeste Plowden
I learned the art of acrylic and pastel painting through private instruction, after having spent my career as a designer of printed fabrics in the New York market place. I am a graduate of the College of Design, Art and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, with a major in the History of Art, 1977. Later, I studied printed textile design at Parsons School of Design, in New York. Immediately afterward, I began free lance work for several design studios in the garment district of NYC, where I did re-coloration work for printed apparel fabrics, and sold my own designs through Bread and Butter Designs,also located in New York. In addition, during the 1980's and 1990's, I designed a number of needlecraft and stencil books for Dover Publications. Currently, I am working on a series of exotic birds and other animals done in acrylic paint, with a palette knife, for texture and brilliant color. Night at Stonehenge, by New York artist, Celeste Plowden
Painting the sky with a palette knife not only adds the texture of layers, but easily gives the impression of a sky laden with clouds, mist and atmosphere. Everything was worked with a palette knife for textures, except the hint of shading on the stones.

"Busy Night Skies" by Karla Nolan
My
take on painting in any medium is this: have fun! Don't take yourself
too seriously. Experiment. Try not to stress (good luck with
that!)..
"Busy
Night Skies" is my interpretation in palette knife oils of what any given
moment in the skies -- moon shimmering through the clouds, possible
lightning strikes occurring, clouds rolling in, satellites blipping over
the landscape. And of course it all occurs over my beloved Rocky
Mountains! I had fun!

I noticed the other night that we had a full moon. It was just before our snowstorm struck, yet again delaying Spring. Weather is rarely dull here in Colorado;
wait 20 minutes, it'll change. Then I started thinking about the "blue
moon" -- two full moons in one month. I have no idea if this is the
month for such an occurrence but I am enraptured with painting
moonscapes. They are just so much fun! Here's one for you....

Okay, it's winter here in my sweet Colorado, it's really cold here and there are two or three feet of snow or more in the nearby foothills. What does this look like at night, pitch black, maybe just a hint of moonlight? I don't honestly depict Nature as it actually is, I'd be a photographer if I did that, but this is my creative imagination at work....looks sort of inviting if you have warm clothing, huh?

I'll
need you to use your imagination a bit here -- you can see the actual
unframed painting of night skies, "Mystery", at the top of this blog and
then an example of a framed painting with the same painting. Please
pretend that the matting is a linen mat -- I didn't have one the correct
size on hand -- and you can see how a miniature painting can increase
to more of a presence.
We are so close to winter now, the darkness arrives so early, what really is in the sky above? It's just a mystery to me!

"Lightning Over City Lights" by Karla Nolan, miniature, lightning, twilight, night scene
Here is another
entry into my weather or lightning series. We live near the foothills
of the Rocky Mountains here in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the weather
can be quite entertaining! As I drive west towards the mountains at
twilight and at nighttime, the flickering lights up on the hills
overlooking Horsetooth Reservoir to the west and looking out at the
Great Plains to the east grab my attention. Add in some lightning and,
man, you have got a show!

"Autumn Leaf Storm" by Karla Nolan, unframed miniature palette knife oil painting
Well,
it appears that the weather has been influencing my art work as of
late... About a week ago the wind just howled at night, the autumn
leaves were furiously dropping from trees, and then the thunderstorm
hit! Our honey locust tree ash has grown tremendously since we moved
into this house and it was slamming into the siding, keeping me awake
much of the night. Naturally, I thought I should definitely "document"
the event.

"Lightning Against Blue" by Karla Nolan
Here's
some more of the heavy atmosphere to which I referred in a previous
post. I am mesmerized by Mother Nature, who wouldn't be? Just when you
think you got it all under control (!), here she comes with intensity
from the skies, the thunderclaps, the electric show, flying down the
various colors looming overhead. Ooooh! I makes me shudder just
thinking of it! And, yes, I LOVE to paint it!

This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

"Zapping Through the Nighttime Sky" by Karla Nolan
Living in Colorado is a meteorological adventure, a weather puzzle. As you must know, we have had "biblical", monumental flooding recently, plus wildfires not only this year but last year. In 1997, a friend of ours had to swim for her life, along with her young son. It simply is never dull around here!
Earlier in the spring, we seemed to be having a lot of thunderstorms, complete with incredible lightning, of course. I started mulling this over -- what if I try to paint the sky when it's uproarious, zipping with electricity, zapping toward the earth. This is the first in a series of fun: lightning storms painted with palette knife and oil. They are a creative and artistic effort to convey emotion, not a literal one, my imagination was involved here, not necessarily realism. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed painting them! What a blast!
