Welcome to my art blog. I am an oil painter with a BFA from the University of Guelph. My goal is not to render the subject exactly, but rather to explore it with the paint keeping the application loose and spontaneous. I use the impasto technique which allows for wonderful texture and really celebrates the medium. I want the viewer to see the knife or brush work - to be aware of and have an appreciation for the paint.

"Aurora Borealis Sundown" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas
This painting is more experimental than usual for me. It is painted with only palette knives but is smooth rather than highly textured. The blending of the oil paints was the fun part and still the difficult aspect of this work. It was reminiscent of photographs I've seen featuring an aurora borealis; I haven't been so fortunate as to actually see a real one. Maybe someday? Who knows?

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I'm steadily catching up on my painting after a crazy couple of weeks. I'm working on a series of farm animals for an upcoming show at Jubilee Biodynamic Farm.
I'm still painting lots of wild fauna, of course. I just finished this particular painting, which was my first attempt at painting a cougar. It's amazing how much my own housecats resemble this impressive animal. Cougars are the largest cats that can purr (to the best of my knowledge...scientists are still debating, apparently).

"Dream Clouds" by Karla Nolan, oil painting on canvas panel
This painting is a combo -- palette knife oils and some brushwork. I'm back in the experimental stage again, go figure! All because I inadvertently packed too quickly last week to join fellow painters, omitting my palette knives (I must have 30 of them -- a bit fanatical, wouldn't you say?) So...I was FORCED to use brushes and didn't find them to be as revolting (okay, I exaggerate!) as I remembered, almost could say I enjoyed them. I had begun this particular painting some time ago and have returned to it periodically -- sunsets and poppies seems to be my passions right now -- so here's another Rocky Mountain sunset just for YOU!

I do have one small painting left to show you from my Chincoteague paint-out weekend. I'm calling it "Beach Cruiser". When the owners of the "Channel Bass Inn" started setting out bicycles in the gardens for their guests to take for a ride to the beach, I saw this bright pink one....and asked if I could move it over to this lime-green foliage ....and 'borrow' it for just an hour or so to paint! Whew, glad that worked out! I was just loving these colors together, enjoying my time in this garden space, and becoming a bit envious of the guests who would actually be riding out on that pink bike over to the beach!- Lucky person!

“Brush strokes” are very crisp and decisive. Colors are placed with a directness that sparkles on the surface. The finished paintings always bring a special freshness to a room.
I used my fingers to do a bit of blending at the finish, and it was done! Hope you like it.

The paint was applied with a palette knife on this canvas, giving the surface alot of texture.
This is one of those contemporary oil paintings that I feel like I can truely say I am a colorist.
I would say that I gave this painting color importance, achieving a special effect with color.
Lots of color, many shades. It will take a long time to dry. I plan to deliver this painting to The Dutch Art Gallery....Pam at Dutch Art has a gold frame waiting for this canvas. Gray Day At The Shoreline

I took some time out to go paint outside today. One of my Twitter artist friends, Jackie White, here in CT invited me to meet up with her over at Harkness Park (my favorite place). It was very overcast most of the day, which is actually quite pretty down by Goshen Cove, looking across the beach. The treeline & tall steeple silhouette is such a nice view. I love how the curve of the beach and grasses lead right in to the steeple view. This one is called, "Gray Day At The Shoreline" and is an 8"x10" on Belgian linen mounted on archival board.
I'm currently working on some commission sketches, another project that looks like it will be a fun painting!

Sky #13 & #14 oils by BECKY JOY

I painted this little nocturne last night. I set up a little earlier than the night before and a little closer to the street. Because it was earlier, there was a little more action on the street with cars, porch lights, people walking and that big orange/gold moon. I notice that I have a little glare on the left of the painting. I'll have to try the photo again. The dark colors can sometimes be hard to keep from getting a glare, but its not too bad.
I also finished this 24x30 today. I had started this last week when I gave a demo, then set it aside when I came home. I wasn't totally pleased with the composition. This morning I figured out what I wanted to do with it, so it was paint all day. I've posted this one on my website, www.beckyjoy.com. I'm counting this one as sky #14 even though it is bigger.
Well, now its time to start packing. I just want to remind all of you that I will not be on ustream this next week, but probably the following Tuesday. My posting will be sporadic this next week.

3 daily sky plein air paintings by BECKY JOY

I went out yesterday as the clouds were blowing into town and painted these two cloudscapes from the backyard. That's one of the expensive houses that looks down onto my neighborhood. They were exciting and fun to paint. Always a rush (literally and figuratively) to paint quickly moving clouds.

This was the first plein air of the day. I ran on errands in the morning as the clouds were starting to come in. I started these at about 3 in the afternoon. By evening there were just a few ribbons of clouds left. They blew in and blew out. I went out last night at probably about 8pm and painted the third scene, a nocturne. There wasn't much going on in the neighborhood as far as lights, but the moon was wonderful. Anyway here is my third plein air sky of the day, Sky #12 of my series.

I worked on getting some ideas together for a commission. Things are busy right now. Also, two or three other commissions (not sure what sizes yet, but big). I'm also getting ready to leave for San Luis Obispo Plein Air Festival next week. I should get something done for tomorrow, but that may be it for a week. I'll have my computer and will try to post something while the plein air event is going on. I'll take pics at the least.

The Secret Garden by Roxanne Steed

I'm finally ready to unveil the last two paintings from my Chincoteague trip. Both of them were done in the fabulous little garden behind the "Channel Bass Inn", just off of Main Street. You would never know that such a garden exists by looking at the front of the Inn. But once you enter into the back yard area, the garden is like a series of little rooms and paths, with a vine covered potting shed, bird baths and fountains, flowers spilling out every where, climbing & soaring; there's something blooming at every level. Tall butterfly bushes and tall sunflowers blossomed overhead to give a real sense of privacy, pink and white phlox growing along some of the lower levels. For my first painting of the morning, I placed my easel where I could see the light peeking through on the garden path, lighting up the rim of an old shell shaped fountain. I'm calling it "The Secret Garden" and it's a 7"x5" oil on primed masonite art board. Oh what an inspiring place to paint (and think about what I might do in my own garden at home)! This is another re-vamped painting I had done a few years back. It was of Spirit Island, but I changed it so much, I had to change the title. Now that I have posted it I realize everything is gravitating to the centre including the horizon line...may have to revisit this one again.This painting was very difficult to photograph...it looks much better in real life!My Website

When traveling to Italy, we like to go to Montepulciano greatly. It's in Tuscany and is a delightful hill town -- bigger than one would imagine upon approach. You park your car on the edge of the town itself and walk around, up and down! The Corso is the "course" that runs through the middle of Montepulciano and on it are art galleries, wine shops, restaurants and so on. It was during the early evening that we saw the sun just beginning to dip behind the hills and this is my recollection of that sweet time, in oil on canvas panel.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

OK, I know its not a sky painting. I WILL continue to paint skies. But today I was online and saw the virtual challenge. Now I haven't done many challenges, but decided to take a walk with my little man on the google man. I found this bend in the road and liked the light and the signs. Only problem was that I walked too far. I was off of the island before I knew it. And now, I don't have any extra time to paint another painting. Maybe next month.
I'm still working on the youtube thing. I made a video. It looks great. I have tried to download it on youtube three times. I know that the size is OK, but it won't download and says there is a problem internally with youtube. So now I'm making a dvd so that I don't lose it somehow playing around on this. I'll get it yet. I don't give up easily, except on the challenge this month.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

This was a plein air from Sunday evening as the sun was going down. I liked the oranges of the palm against a warm sky of grayed violets and blues. It was late when I finished painting and I was hungry and tired so it didn't get posted right away.
Yesterday I got a new program for videos to go with my new camcorder and youtube. I shot some video while I was in Oregon plein air painting, but wasn't able to do much with it with the rudimentary program that came with my camera. Anyway, I played with the computer all day yesterday only to realize that I needed a program with more options. I kept trying to cut down on the video time. I cut away scenes, etc, but I really needed to have it in fast speed. After working on it all day, I realized that I needed to upgrade to another program. So now I have another one to start over with. I'll start on that tonight instead of TV.
I was going to paint another sunset on ustream this afternoon, but I really got into this 40x30 ptg today that I blocked-in. So the plan is to work on this one during the broadcast. Tune in to see the results.

This morning I headed out to Griswold Point, down in Old Lyme, to meet up with other CT Plein Air Painters. What a gorgeous September morning. I took a walk down to see the water, from time to time turning to see what was behind me. That's when I noticed the sunlight on this yellow barn! My intentions were to paint some of the shoreline this morning....but I know the thing that 'grabs me' quicker than anything is strong light contrasts! We're at the time of year when the tall grasses in the fields are getting those red-tinged tops- it makes for such interesting color variations across the surface!
I just got back in Sunday evening from a trip down to DC. Though I didn't take the oils with me this time. We went down on the train, so I wanted to pack light. But I did take a sketch book, and had time for a few museum trips!
I still have 2 more small oil paintings to share with you from my Chincoteague paint-out, and I've recently finished a commission to share with you! Thanks for following along, I'll be talking about all those later this week!

I grew up in the expansive Montana prairie and am now living on a farm in beautiful and lush Western Washington. My textured paintings depict the animals and landscapes of the American West with a contemporary sensibility. I strive to capture with paint my love for the stunning vistas of the American West and the inhabitants of that beautiful land.

When I took the photo I used for my reference, I peered into the window only to see stacks of boxes. The new owner is apparently using it for storage. The entire street has gone through quite a transformation. That building to the right of it is full of high rise condos. I so love the juxtaposition of old and new that you see all around Boston. I sure hope they come to their senses soon and do something interesting with this space. I mean, they gave it a fresh coat of bright red paint after all. I was glad to see they kept it intact.
Here is a close up of the only part of the painting that has people. You can see that it's only a few strokes that define the woman diners. I saved that part for last and had fun with it.

The ocean is a mystery to me -- I live inland but love lying on a beach and listening to the surf pound. It is such a peaceful time, quite relaxing. However, not living near the water really does post a problem to my way of thinking, as I usually am near it during the more pleasant months of the year, not the story winter months. That is the mystery -- what it is like to live nearby during difficult weather? Probably it's something I'll never experience as I don't tend to travel during the wicked winter -- ah, if I had only grown up next to the sea -- but then I wouldn't be the proud Coloradan that I am now.

Chincoteague Houseboat

The fourth & final painting of last Friday's paint-out in Chincoteague was completed in the afternoon. I'm calling it, "Chincoteague Houseboat".
After lunch, I headed down to Curtis Merritt Harbor marina near the end of South Main Street on Chincoteague. Now at 2pm, the sky was clouding up and the wind picking up a bit, too, but I had been admiring some of the larger boats here. As long as the wind didn't send me & my gear into the water, I knew I'd have the last painting of the day right there. I had checked out the views from both sides of the marina & found I couldn't go wrong either way, but I had one view that really appealled to me - but what I thought was a shed or small building....turned out to be a houseboat! Wow! I found out through one of the boaters who came up to see what I was up to. "Oh, you're painting the house-boat".
me, "That's a houseboat?...wow, does it go out very often?"
The boater told me, this fellow who owns the houseboat only takes it out once or twice a year, but certainly for the pony swim! Now there's a story - and something I'd love to see! It's been almost 20 years since I've been to a pony penning day on Chincoteague (it happens every year, the last week of July). But the excitement stays with you - it's something you never forget! I think I need to get me back to the island during July and see this again! I'll be watching out for the houseboat!
The plein-air event on Chincoteague is so well planned and hosted. There's a couple that hosts a dinner for the artists on the Friday night of the weekend event. They always have a wonderful spread of food and desserts in warm and inviting surroundings. It is always fun to see old friends who continue to return to the paint-out as well as new friends that you haven't yet had the pleasure to meet. Now, as beautiful as the surroundings are to paint, there are many of us artists who smile, wink & tell you we definitely come back for the Friday night dinners!

My daily painting didn't go well today. I tried another painting and the jury is still out on it. I'll have to look at it for a while. I'm not sure if I like it. This was my second daily sky. I'm much more pleased with this one.
I've started on a painting marathon here. I've been really excited about what I'm painting and going through unfinished and finished paintings and tweaking them. I've also gotten a couple of new ones done. I've been trying to get some larger pieces and sunsets for galleries finished. Today was a good day other than my first daily painting. I guess I needed a warm up.
