I'm so excited to announce my first workshop in Tuscany, Italy, June 6-13, 2015, Painting Under the Tuscan Sun! Scheduled strategically to coincide with the heart of poppy bloom season, we'll be in the Chianti region of Tuscany. We'll stay in a restored 12th Century monastery, and take excursions to Siena and nearby hillside villages. I'm hoping to capture dozens and dozens of photos of lavender, too, but I'm not real sure if lavender will be in bloom. You are invited to join me for the painting dream vacation of a lifetime! Red White and Blue Daisies and Geraniums is the newest container garden in Flower Mound Studio, in honor of Memorial Day. My father was a veteran of the Korean War, and though he never talked much about his time in the war, he brought home a handful of medals. He served on one of the first ships engaged in battle, since his destroyer was on a goodwill mission around the world when war was first declared. Read more....

Tender Rain Hydrangeas is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, celebrating a new vase I received from a dear friend. You are invited to join me for my June 21 workshop at the Dallas Arboretum. I love teaching flower painting in the most beautiful gardens in Texas, and this will be a great time of year to get dozens of flower photos during the lunch break! Okay, dozens is a conservative estimate. I've been known to fill up an entire cell phone's worth of memory in 2 hours at the Arboretum before. My husband seems to find this quite astounding, though I'm sure all of you, my flower fanatic friends, are sympathetic to the cause....!

We were so fortunate to have big, fat, happy tulips to paint in my Valentine's weekend workshop this weekend. Heart Song Red Tulips was my class demo today, and with all sunshine, cupcakes and chocolate floating about, you would think we were at the sugar spa or something! My new vase was embellished with tiny red hearts around the neckline as a tribute to the season of love. Tomorrow is the last day of my three day Valentine's workshop, and I'm always sad to say goodbye to my students and see them depart. We had a requisite puppy/baby photo sharing session today, and I saw a little Bichon girl with tiny red barrettes in her hair that might have been just a wee bit cuter than my Annie, though you didn't hear that from me!

Class Demonstration

The sun was shining, chocolate was flowing, and eleven students from Florida, California, Louisiana and across Texas were on hand to paint flowers in bright colors today in my Valentine's workshop. We have so many fresh flowers to choose from, I decided to do a bit of a pot-pourri in my new Biscotti vase today. Congratulations to Suzanne who took home the big giant gift basket, Nancy who won a heart necklace, and Terry who won an enviably glittery lipstick shaped dish! I'm not sure what Terry will store in that dish, remind me to ask him tomorrow when we will be painting more fresh flowers.

Tea for Two With Strawberries is the newest daily in Flower Mound Studio, and I'm packing fresh strawberries for my Valentine's workshop. I couldn't resist pulling out a few for a preview, and I fear that one of these was consumed by a ravenous artist. The details are too graphic to share on this bloggy, you'll be glad to know...

October Garden Sunflowers and Daisies by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

October Garden Sunflowers and Daisies

October Garden Sunflowers and Daisies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I begin work on a large commissioned painting of a Dallas Arboretum cherry blossom path. This is the perfect time of year to be painting outdoor scenes, as the North Texas weather has taken a turn today toward fall, with cool breezes and a light sprinkling of rain. Fall is my favorite time of year, and the season I missed most when I lived in Southern California, where temperatures averaged 85 degrees F about 320 days a year. I used to lose track of time there, with the years seeming to whiz past, because there were no seasonal changes to mark the days passing. Now that I'm back in Texas, I miss the California sunshine! Ah the irony of it all...

Earth and Sky Daisies by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

I am honored to have been invited to serve as a demonstration artist for the September 19, 2013, meeting of a very talented group of artists, the Highland Arts Guild of Marble Falls, Texas. I hope you will join us for a fun morning of painting and talking about art and become a Highland Arts Guild member while you're at it! Read more...

I've shared more photos on my art blog from my recent girl's painting week in the mountains near Oakley, Utah. My friend Elizabeth Robbins (world famous rose painter) was our gracious hostess, and made sure we had plenty of hiking opportunities to help burn off the donuts, chip and dip, homemade spaghetti, and snacks that make a retreat complete.

Pink Hollyhocks and Moose Sightings by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Pink Hollyhock Duo by Nancy Medina

Oil on Archival Panel

Pink Hollyhocks was inspired by a Utah garden last week during a plein air painting trip to the mountains with girlfriends. What a fabulous week we had hiking along rivers and painting amidst the aspens. I didn't spot any bears this year, but we did see a moose and her baby one morning. She returned later the same evening much closer to our cabin, and I got a video of her I'll share in my next art newsletter! I'm told a mama moose can be very aggressive, so I was the first one back to the cabin when she made her encore appearance.

Dots and Sunflowers by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

I added dots to the pot in this studio setup, just to give the painting a dash of personality in my daily  newbie. These fresh sunflowers  were delegated to the trash bin after this last moment in the sun. They stood bravely through 3 days of workshops and then came home for a few more days, but, in the end, they gave their petals for a worthy cause...

When the Wind Blows Sunflowers by Texas Artist Nancy Medina

When the Wind Blows Sunflowers is a daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio and was one of my class demonstrations in North Texas this weekend. I always have plenty of help in the studio, with four supervisors. One in particular is most helpful when the ladies visit, because he does adore the ladies. (One of his favorite ladies is his Aunt Sherry.) I told Howie when he learns to say French fry, then he shall have a whole basket of them all to himself. He is wearing his beret today in hopes of charming a treat out of any gullible visitor who happens to be standing by the cookie jar.

Celebrate Today Hydrangea Garden is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, with a message hidden under the painting (see my blog for the image). I finished this one late while the pugs snored all around the easel. The house is filled with fresh flowers following my workshop last weekend, one of the most excellent perks of my new job as a full-time artist. I have so many things to paint it is hard to decide where to start. I woke up this morning excited to get to work. I cannot remember feeling that way, ever before, for any job I have ever had before now. I'm very thankful, and it sure feels like it's worthy of celebration, tomorrow morning maybe I'll buy donuts!

Sunflower Jubilee by Nancy Medina

SOLD

Sunflower Jubilee was my class demonstration this morning for students from Louisiana, Ohio, and all parts of Texas. I had quite a contingent from Louisiana, as well as ladies from other states, who all shared one thing in common - a love for bright color! Using fresh flowers, students used broad strokes to create loose, fresh sunflowers on a bed of transparent paint. Transparents are such a great way to push floral colors to their absolute brightest. Tomorrow we paint white hydrangeas, stay tuned to my art blog for more pictures to come!

SOLD ~ Summer Nights Red Geranium Painting and a North Texas Workshop by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Summer Nights Red Geraniums
by Nancy Medina

SOLD

Oil on Archival Panel

Tomorrow morning my three-day workshop in Irving, Texas begins, which enabled me to exercise little or no self-control in the Central Market *sound of harps* Flower Market today! For class this week, I found luscious, fat pink roses, white hydrangeas, purple and white stock, three kinds of sunflowers, red and white gerbera daisies, and at this point I simply lose track of everything else I grabbed and threw in the cart in a state of flower buying fervor. This new little geranium, however, came straight from my garden on a hot summer day!

Daisy Delight and a Hidden Message by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

 Daisy Delight by Nancy Medina

Oil on Archival Panel

Daisy Delight is the newest daily work in Flower Mound Studio, as I finish up the pots in my new container garden commission. I have hidden a message under my daisies today, visit my art blog to see what lies beneath! I almost did not add the polka dots on my red mug, but decided at the last minute that this painting needed just a dash of fun. Daisies are such simple, frivolous flowers, if there is a word that describes them, I think delightful seems to fit them best.

Morning Sunnies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. It's been a busy week, shipping paintings, running pug-related errands (special foods, medications, two new toys for her majesty, etc) and I had a very cool first - my first royalty check arrived! *sound of trumpets* It's not absolutely huge, but it is kind of cool knowing my work is out there, starting to reach markets around the world. Is this what they call passive income? I like the idea of that, don't you? I kind of picture myself sitting in a lounge chair with a glass of iced lemon aid, wearing a big hat and reading a Danielle Steele novel....! Actually, the first time I've sat down today was to write this blog post. It's true that when you own your own business, work never stops. Fortunately, I absolutely love my job!
