I love visiting vineyards! This weekend I'm off to see a concert in one for our
26th anniversary. Getting excited!

I decided to make these a bit more blue then they turned out this year.
This bush has is very old and years ago had blue flowers. It's amazing how the blooms
change color with the acid content of the soil.

Blog Talk Radio and Hydrangea Queens in New Orleans - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

No sooner had I unpacked from my back to back workshops in Nashville and New Orleans, and it was time to prep for my Blog Talk Radio Show interview for Artists Helping Artists.

I'm so nervous! What if I forget my name? Worse yet, what if I forget the studio helpers' names?

Leslie Saeta and Margaret Sheldon, the hostesses, assure me it's just a chat between friends, nothing to be concerned about. Nevertheless, my motto is: It's best to be over prepared. I've glued post-it notes all over my computer and begun gargling with salt water. I've included essential information, too, like my name, blue and yellow makes green, all those little things that slip my 50-plus year old mind. Read more....

Blue Heaven Hydrangeas and Tough Choices in the Garden - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina Art

Blue Heaven Hydrangeas

I clipped the blooms from my hydrangeas this evening. I originally had planned to cut some of my new irises and bring them into the studio to paint. I stood in front of the iris bed with the scissors in my hand, looking at the white irises, and the blue irises, and the deep purple, and I just could not bring myself to cut any of them. They were so tall, and fresh, and recently unfurled, and clearly enjoying their moment in the sun after a long winter.

The blue hydrangeas that traveled with me from my last workshop, however, were beginning to fade. Destined for my flower pots tomorrow, I knew the blossoms would not last much longer. Or perhaps that is just the excuse I used to have the courage to cut them. They posed quite bravely under the hot spotlight in Big Blue, my favorite vase, this evening. Here's to their sacrifice - thank you so much to these lovely blue blossoms for taking one for the team!

Hidden Hydrangea Garden - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

Hidden Hydrangea Garden is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, with snow all day keeping the helpers and I pretty much house bound. Hidden Hydrangea is another painting dedicated to the memory of my great-grandmother's house in Palestine, Texas, a house that has wonderful childhood memories for me. Shady verandas, the haunted peacock bedroom upstairs, the big claw-foot bathtub, and the shed in the back yard with so many shadows and places to hide...all of these places still play a starring role in my dreams sometimes.

We hit the flower jackpot in Florida yesterday, my hostess with the most-ess Ann drove me to a warehouse of fresh flowers as soon as I landed in the sunshine state yesterday. On top of that, she failed to restrain me in any way, shape, or fashion, as I tossed fresh peonies, hydrangeas, Japanese iris, daisies, delphiniums, and all sorts of other colorful plants onto our my shopping cart. Oh, and a few new vases, too, (because one can never have too many sparkley vases....).  Today we painted hydrangeas until the seagulls came home, and tomorrow we're going to warm up our pink brushs with some lovely roses and peonies. I do so appreciate my flower models. They don't fidget, they don't complain about the bright lights, they don't eat much and never, ever show up for a shoot after partying all night with bags under their eyes.  Read more....

California Blooming Radishes and Hydrangeas was my class demonstration in historic Balboa Park this weekend. I was tickled pink to find the roses were in bloom on Coronado Island, when we visited my favorite cottage garden there after class. This talented group of painters included the largest collection of international students I've ever had in a class. The traveled furthest award went to six students from Singapore, Australia, and Canada, though one of the ladies from Orange County California was pretty certain her commute that morning took longer than a flight from Sydney. We also had painters from Michigan, Alabama, Arizona, New York, Idaho, and across California swinging brushes and making bright color happen. My next California workshop is going to be in....*sound of harps* Sonoma, California! That spring class in one of the most beautiful wine destinations in the US is filling fast so don't delay, I'm reserving a grape with your name on it mon cher! Read more...

Blue Rhapsody Hydrangeas

Blue Rhapsody is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, based on a setup from my worksho last weekend. We placed a purple silk cloth behind a batch of fresh blue hydrangeas, and draped the cloth at an angle (since we didn't have enough to cover the entire background). The warm light turned the cloth orange on one side, and almost white on the other, leaving streaks of crimons violets in the shadows. My partner in flower stalking, Mary Medley, and I both agreed such color schemes make our hearts go pitty pat! I wonder if there are others out there nearly as nuts about flowers as Mary and I....?

Confetti Pink Hydrangeas is an arrangement inspired by garden colors today. If you look closely, you're likely to see a little pug nosing around in there. My helpers are awfully fond of hopping into the camera lens at just that perfect moment when you finally get the blossom centered and in focus.

I'm always just a little sad on the last day of a workshop, saying goodbye to a group of friends from across the country. By Day 3, we've all let our hair down a bit, wiped yellow paint off one another's faces, shared cookies at some point, and painted until the cows came home on several occasions. Toss in a little chocolate, and there is no better bonding experience I can think of! My Murfreesboro, Tennessee workshop wrapped up today, and tomorrow I fly home to the hubby and the pugs in North Texas. Next stop, Spring, Texas! Visit my art blog to see more workshop photos...

Midnight Hydrangeas and a French Dream Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Midnight Blue Hydrangeas is a new small work completed a few moments after midnight. Today was spent packing for my Nashville, Tennessee workshop. I've got to be a little strategic, since I need to leave enough supplies here for my Irving, Texas workshop, coming up in 1 week. It never fails I always discover one color I am almost out of right before ship day! It's like Murphy's law or something...I can blame it on the flurry of activity since I launched my France workshop on Thursday. The class is almost completely full, with only 2 seats left. It's the good kind of busy to be!

Color Connection is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, it's so good to be home after back to back trips. I'll be sending out a big announcement via the newsletter Thursday, so be sure to sign up if you haven't already. I also have a new FREE video I made for you while flying home from New Orleans this week. I've discovered sitting on a plane is about the only time I can dedicate uninterrupted time to editing videos. Since we are all waiting with bated breath for my DVD lessons to launch (I'm being patient, I swear I am, my videographer is wonderful and she has a new baby, after all, the best reason on earth not to rush your videographer....), it seemed only proper that we have a little appetizer video to hold us over. I'll share that with you Thursday morning, bright and early, also via the newsletter. Sign up here so you won't miss out, there is a cameo appearance by one of  my helpers, after all....

Class Demonstration

I'm honored to announce I've been invited to provide a painting demonstration for the Irving Arts Association this week. This is one of the most active art groups in Texas, filled to the gills with outstanding award winning painters and teachers. I confess I'm just a little nervous, but I'm sure as soon as I get that brush loaded up with paint and I'm in front of that blank canvas, all will be well. I used to be absolutely terrified of speaking in public, to the point of needing medication to get through it. Ever since I began teaching painting, though, it is like breathing. I actually enjoy it. How strange, don't you think, that such a thing can reverse itself? Have you ever had that happen?

Blue Dreams Garden Path - Hydrangea and Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Blue Dreams is a new small work in Flower Mound Studio, as drenching rains and lightning pay a visit outside the studio windows. With the new skylight tubes, I have a play of lightning dancing across the walls from above, reflected on the paintings and moving around like electrical currents through the air. There is always an energy that comes with these big Texas thunderstorms, a feeling of excitement. Little Hannah is terrified of storms, so I spent much of the evening carrying her around in my arms, until the worst of the hail, thunder and wind passed us by. I hope these rains are heading to South Texas, the bluebonnets there are in need of a refreshing drink of water!

I planted all but one pot of hydrangeas from my Louisiana workshop last week. The last bunch to hold up under the studio spotlight was featured in Halos and Hydrangeas today, and tomorrow the plant itself will go into my garden. It's the ultimate in recycling! Paint the flowers, plant the flowers. My next two workshops are full, so I've opened up a new workshop in North Texas, and another in Spring, near Houston, in the new gallery located in the heart of this charming town. My workshops are open for beginners to advanced painters, and I share how to make your paintings more dramatic, how to simplify your shapes and create exciting, clean color, and most of all, how to paint loosely, giving your work energy and flow. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make flowers bloom in brilliant color together!

Colorful Companions is the newest container garden in Flower Mound Studio and I'm so relieved to finish this up before I leave for Lafayette, Louisiana this week. I have this big ole (a technical term) list I've been checking off since I got back from Florida, and finish a couple of new container gardens for the show at Dallas Arboretum Artscape is a priority! I may forget to pack a change of clothes for my class in Louisiana, but it won't be the first time something art related has taken precedence over my wardrobe...

Color Burst Container Garden is the newest painting on the easel today. I decided to go just a little overboard with the color, because there was no one in the studio providing adult supervision whatsoever. As you can tell from my table loaded with flowers, I went grocery shopping, also with no adult supervision whatsoever. I forgot to pick up dishwasher soap, I was so distracted by the pots of blue hydrangeas. Perfectly understandable. How could I keep from crimping my flowers, if they had to share space in the cart with bulky grocery items such as milk and eggs?

We painted plein air in a beautiful garden with bougainvillea for the fourth day of my Florida workshop today in 80 degree weather and sunshine, with a little drenching by an unexpected sprinkler or two just to keep things interesting. I'll be sharing pictures of the fruit of our outdoor labors soon, but here are some images from our days in the studio painting first. We ended our week with four paintings, including sunflowers, roses, white hydrangeas, and bougainvillea in fuschia, peach and violet. It was wonderful to have fresh bougainvillea to paint, but watch out for those thorns, they're wicked!

I love color, and I love temperature extremes, and I especially like what happens when you toss all those ingredients into the same salad bowl and come up with a bit of painting potpourri. Tomorrow I'll be shopping for tropicals, so stay tuned for a bit more wildness to come...
