"Roses and Cherries" by Mary Beth Gaiarin

I am happy to be a new member of the Palette Knife Painters. The palette knife is my magic wand for spontaneity and boldness. This is one of my latest paintings, “Roses & Cherries,” 20” x 20”, oil on linen.

30 paintings in 30 days, January 2017 Collage by Marion Hedger

30 paintings in 30 days, January 2017 Collage
by Marion Hedger

The challenge is over and I managed to paint every day.

My personal challenge was to experiment with abstracts and experment I did. I tried several different techniques from collage and assemblage through to intuitive works and onto drawing. I liked all of my works, although some were more successful than others. Now the hard work begins of assimmilating what I learnt and putting the final touches on my most successful paintings.

Thank you once again to Lesle Saeta for hosting the challenge, the rewards in participating outweigh the self-induced stress.

To peruse the other participants paintings vist Leslie's blog and have a peek.

Thank you all for following my progress.

Reworking an old painting - WIP by Marion Hedger

Work in progresss
by Marion Hedger
40x40cm

I am reworking one of my old paintings that has been sitting in the corner for a few years. I came across it today and felt it had some good points and was worth using as a basis for a new painting.

I didn't take a photo before I started but remembered about half an hour into it. It will give you some idea of what the original looked like. I am sure I have a photo of it somewhere but I have changed computers twice (or maybe three) times since then. I wanted to start painting so will see if I feel like wading through my old backups later.

I like how the yellow tulips fade into the background of this photo. I will try to keep that effect, but will be surprised if I can resist putting more paint on!

Old Fashioned, Rose Still Life Painting By Marion Hedger

My aim was to pay particular attention to the lost and found edges and I'm quite pleased with the effect. Unfortunately the camera always make the edges of palette knife paintings seem sharper than they are.

Garden Flowers Inspiration by Marion Hedger

Work in progress, crop by Marion Hedger

April until June is the nicest time in my garden - first the daffodils start nodding their heads, quickly followed by the early irises and tulips. After tulips come the poppies and then the bearded irises. The colours range from the yellows of the daffs, the reds of the tulips and poppies, through to the purples and blues of the irises.

At the moment, the pinks and reds in the form of climbing roses are taking center stage and I took these snaps for my current painting inspiration.

The top image a teaser for the pink rose painting I am working on at the moment. It's nearly finished so all will be revealed tomorrow.

Impressionist Floral Painting, Daily Painting, Roses and Pear, 14x18x1.5" Oil

In early November, I attended a workshop with Elio Camacho.  I have to say it was four hard working, but enjoyable days.  He is a wonderful instructor and has given me to courage to attempt new techniques.

He has helped me tremedously with seeing color.  I was not reading the reflection on the bottle as lavander until he pointed it out to me.  Of course, his use of color is what attracted me to his work in the first place.

I like the soft colors here along with the soft edges.

I have plans to return for another session with him in March.  I am working hard to  put his techniques into practice in my work and I am excited to see where this journey will take my art.

Thanks for reading my blog today.

French Roses and All My Best From Paris - Nancy Medina Art Classes and Videos

French Roses

Oil on Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas, Sold

Class Demonstration, Frayssinet, France

It's important to learn from your travel experiences, taking note of those important teaching moments,  such as taking selfies facing upward into the rain in front of the Eiffel tower with your eyes open is an exercise in futility. Cafe hopping across Paris with a total disregard for a reasonable eating schedule is highly encouraged. Searching for the Sennelier art store (which happens to reside across from the Musee d'Orsay which rhymes with Monet) is a worthy pursuit, even if you do the entire pilgrimage at sunset, knowing full well the oldest art store in Paris will be closed when you arrive.

I'm sharing all the best videos, photos, and moments from my month of teaching in France with you on my Facebook fan page, including our tour of Monet's Garden in Giverny. Read more....

Abstract Roses

I have been experimenting with knifing flowers and then creating abstract colorful backgrounds. The complements of orange and blue really zing here.  And everyone loves roses!
