Looking
back on painting these
Palm Trees
in non-traditional colors
I think my New England heritage
was making an appearance.
Though I may be living in the desert
these days my heart
will always be in New England
in the Fall.
So I guess it was only natural
for me to combine
my fascination with the Palm Trees of my current surroundings
with my love for the colors of
New England in the fall.

Using only a palette knife and bold colors Karen’s painting are intended to draw you in and caressing you like a lover. Sensual and tantalizing, whimsical and teasing, with curves that ebb and flow. I wanted to try painting Tango dancers for a while. But I painted this from the "leg"/"feet" aspect. I like to sometimes guess what the art is about, I don't want to know the whole story, I want to fill in the blanks.
I heard a while back when the high definition T.V.'s were coming out that watcing HD actually made the brain get bored. Because of all the fine details the eye sees, the brain doesn't need to "fill in the blanks" and so while seeing all the details might be exciting, the brain sometimes doesn't want to follow along in the story. Because I'm of an age that remember B&W movies and T.V shows, I wonder then if that is why I like the old movies?
While we watch Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers dance in a classic movie, we don't know if she's wearing red, or blue...but it captures our attention and we watch their ever footsteps
I must apologize with this photo of my painting, however. The problem with this photo is that the painting is dark and I wasn't able to take a good photo without the glare. The areas that look like white is very subtle in the original painting. I'll have to re-take this photo.

Olive Trees and Mas by Jeannette Johnston

This painting is of a scene in the Alpilles. In that area of Provence the farms and villages are a pale whitish stone bleached by the sun. The landscape is quite arid with scrubby bushes known as garrigue covering the lower slopes of the mountains and in the valleys fields of olive trees as far as the eye can see. Although there are generally fewer vineyards than in the neighbouring Luberon, there are some particularly around the pretty little village of Eygalières.

number of years ago I painted "Poppy Progress" in pastel. This
depicted the early stages of the poppy pod, on to the bud stage just
before the flower opened, and then the fully opened poppy itself. I
decided to try this again, but in a more complex layout. This time the
subject is: lily pads.
My
husband and I traveled to Maui a number of years ago and addition to
touring the Road to Hana, going to a luau, and being touristy, we also
visited a tropical garden. This was my very first viewing of lily pads
and, although I have painted them onto glass, I don't believe I ever
attempted to paint them in oil. I must say, it was a very difficult,
challenging task but, as it came together over many hours, I feel that
it worked. Yaay!

Dancing Trees is a very modern take on a Maui photo I shot years ago.
Baldwin Beach has many trees that need to be navigated to make your way to the warm sand and water. It is a beautiful beach, as are most Hawaiian beaches.

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

I consider myself primarily self taught.I am a member of Plein Air Florida, and the leader of Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. My paintings are in art collections worldwide.I have co-published an article in Plein Air Magazine. I have contributed paintings to Art for Nature, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Habitat for Humanity and various other charities.I love painting outside using the painting knife. Technique Demonstration by Pamela Blaies

After a workshop this fall and some experimenting over the past few weeks, my technique has begun to evolve a little. I used to do a pencil sketch before painting to make sure I was pleased with my composition. Now, instead I abstractly "block in" my composition with a large brush. I was able to adjust and make the silver pitcher smaller after the block in showed me how to make the composition stronger. After block in, the rest of the painting is done with palette knife.

"Soft Tinged Mountain Dusk" by Karla Nolan
Honesty
is important. This image just showed up in my mind one day and I
decided to paint it. I have no "reference" other than my memory. Mind
you, I see so many sunsets...they seem to merge together, show up, and I
need to apply them to a canvas! Does that make sense? It does to me
-- looking at classical art (such as Cassat, Monet, Manet, Picasso,
Degas...you get the gist), up and coming/contemporary art (Kassan,
Edmondson, Vlandereen, Tyler, Hartman)...ar this just seems to come
togetherr in some sort of seed form and it evolves from there in my
head....I don't want to copy anyone, just want to be myself, in my own
realm, no imitation (although, yes, that is flattering, but not for
me!)....So, just ride along, please, and enjoy the show as much as you
can!

Okay,
I'll be brutally honest here. I have painted this scene before, a
number of times, in fact. I never tire of it. Between Silverton and
Durango, Colorado, sits Red Mountain Pass. My husband and I went
through here in the mid-1970s and have been here since that long time
ago. The falls here in the Rocky Mountains are different from Back
East. The aspens tends to flutter around in their vibrant gold and
yellow tones, rarely orange or red, but that does occur occasionally.
The skies are bright blue, the underbrush turning hues of ochre. I love
this time of year, be it on the plains, the foothills, or the mountains
of my sweet state. I hope you get the feeling of autumn, before the
high piles of snow, blizzards, and cold just around the bend.

I'm Kathy Willis, an Arizona native residing in Flagstaff, a late-comer painter, blogger, and trailrunner. After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.
Daily Painting 1463 Approaching Storm
I went out to paint when the edge of Sandy was going by, it was just windy. Had a nice walk on the beach too.
I like to start off with a fast sketch before I do the painting to warm up and catch any compositional problems. The wind was blowing strong and it looked like rain so I parked under a pavilion at Fredrick Douglas park on the beach. I got my sketch finished and the rain started coming down, well not down really more like across, it was blowing pretty horizontal. Got soaked on the way to the car which was about 20 feet away.
Last night I pulled out my sketch and made the painting below from it, its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

I consider myself primarily self taught.I am a member of Plein Air Florida, and the leader of Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. I have contributed paintings to Art for Nature, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Habitat for Humanity and various other charities.I love painting outside using the painting knife. I love the rich texture and lustrous effects I can get with the knife. My studio is located in my home in Fort Pierce. I use both of my names in my art, Lori McNamara and Lenore McNamara. This painting is of a provencal cabanon surrounded by vineyards, cypresses an olive trees. The stone built cabanon (meaning little cabin) is typical of Provence and the neighbouring Languedoc Roussillon. At one time they were used by the shepherds for resting in, particularly during the transhumance when the sheep and goats were moved from their winter quarters in the valleys to higher slopes.

painted this yesterday its an old bay tree that has been through a lot
of hurricanes. It got blown down in one and the new branches are
growing up from the main trunks like little trees. Its oil on masonite,

I am pleased to be back on Palette Knife Painters blogspot -- unfortunately, I had to stop my painting for 18 months, due to health issues. Friends and family urged me to resume my art, but let me tell you, radiation for breast cancer will wipe anyone out! My heart goes out to all cancer patients, friends of theirs, and, of course, families. Enough said.
So....
this was just so much fun to paint! After an 18 month absence, I was a
bit unnerved about the prospect of putting palette knife into oil,
never mind onto canvas, but I have always enjoyed seeing irises in
springtime, so I thought, why not? The colors are just vivid as can be
and with the prospect of winter around the corner, we all need a bit of
cheer!

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

Painting at the Old Fort Park
I went painting today, finally, I have been in a horrible funk, just
not in the mood to paint. Went to the Old Fort Park in Ft. Pierce to
paint, it was beautiful out. The painting below wasn't done today
though, it was done back in May, there was the annual Souvenirs of
Downtown paintout and for some reason I never got around to posting this
painting. I think I did the painting and was tired out, dropped it off
at the show and that was that. And now it is at another show at the
Art Bank.
I wanted to post it because the palm tree was blown down in Sandy. My painting shows it still standing and then I took a photo of it today. It is still alive and may survive, I know they sometimes do.
