Dunes in Palette Knife

Dunes
22 x 28
oil on canvas
My favorite view is the anticipation view of the beach; right around the corner or right behind the dunes.  I am very blessed to be able to get in my car any old time to see this and I am inspired every time.

Psalm 139:17-18

17 How precious to me are Your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand
when I awake, I am still with You.

Original oil painting Beach Dunes by Karen Tarlton

SOLD
Beach Dunes
8x10
Oil

Spending a few hours a day watching the sailboats go by inspires me to paint scenes like this.
Right now we live a few miles from the beach so
it's possible to take a little jog
along the boardwalk while looking out at water.
When I return to my studio to paint,
I remember colors much more vividly
than if I were still staring at the sea.
I close my eyes, listen to the ocean and paint!

Back of the Dunes by Roxanne Steed

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival board

I am always pleasantly surprised at the wonderful 'abstract' shapes in a landscape that you see when you squint your eyes down to see just the values.

Even on a gray, misty, overcast day, there is some wonderful color in the dried out grasses along the back of the dune. And yes, it's one of my favorite painting spots, over at Waterford Beach Park, the little path before you walk out to the beach, back in the marshy area. I finished this painting before the mist turned to a light rain. It was a wonderful morning of 'information gathering' with some good ideas tucked away in my memory to use for a larger studio painting, that I'll be sharing in an upcoming blog post!

Contact me here, for more information about this painting!

I am excited to be a new member of the Palette Knife Painters Blog.  I love a lot of color and texture in my oils and the palette knife is a wonderful way to accomplish that goal.  Most of my landscapes are done primarily with palette knife and only a brush to sign my name. I love painting the wide open spaces of a marsh or a seascape and I find, for me, the knife somehow expresses that sense of space better.  I hope you will check out my website and daily painting blog and once again I am so happy to be here among the company of so many great artists!
