January Woods

 January Woods - Sold
5"x 7" oil on panel

The first real snow of 2015 layered everything with white today and provided a snow day for many.  Me included.  Its never really a snow day as technology increases remote connectivity and I worked from home.

However, at 4am I couldn't sleep and was up and in the studio and found an image I had taken a few years ago looking out from the protection of the woods into the clearing of the meadow and decided to paint it.   I believe painting becomes automatic to me, no matter what the time of day, whether night or day.

I am surrounded by trees where I live in the country and over time have made trails and clearings through the trees that provide magical places to observe light and colour.

"Red Sunset in Winter" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

I've resumed painting on glass and present you with my version of a snowy evening with a vivid sunset!  This sort of art can be trying to produce, there are always the unexpected color mixes, problems with tools, spills, and, of course, impatience!  I must say that I do enjoy the results, however, if not always the process!

"Red Sunset in Winter", 11"x14" painting on glass (measured edge to edge glass) in frame shown, $450 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click button on my blogspot listed below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

First Snow

First Snow - Sold
 5" x 7" oil on panel

After the first real snowfall of the year, I drove to an out of town gallery to collect a couple of pieces that hadn't sold during the summer.  The drive was lovely, as snow sat heavily in the trees, blanketing the world and making it look like a picture postcard.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw some boats that were pulled up from the water for the winter. Sitting there in the browned grass with snow covering the edges of the boat, I knew there was a painting in the scene.  Just a hint of the water behind the boat tempts the viewer to look further into the painting.

After each painting that I complete in my current series of boat paintings, I use the leftover paint on the palette to create a small 5" x 7" piece, usually available in my Etsy store.

You can find more of my work on my website Jeanette Jobson Fine Art, my blog, Illustrated Life and on Facebook and Twitter.  Stop by and say hi, I'd love to hear from you!

"Snow Trees at Night" by Karla Nolan

Okay, it's winter here in my sweet Colorado, it's really cold here and there are two or three feet of snow or more in the nearby foothills.  What does this look like at night, pitch black, maybe just a hint of moonlight?  I don't honestly depict Nature as it actually is, I'd be a photographer if I did that, but this is my creative imagination at work....looks sort of inviting if you have warm clothing, huh?

Waiting for Spring - winter snow scene palette knife painting by Marion Hedger

Waiting for Spring - winter snow scene
palette knife painting by Marion Hedger

on box canvas
Day 30 of the 30 day challenge
Available for purchase via Daily Paintworks auction
or buy it now price
Take a look at Marion Hedger's art website

Well the last day of the challenge is here, and it is time to take a breather and stock of all the paintings. I like some much better than others and will work on a few some more after I have studied them. Sometimes it takes a while to be able to assess a painting more critically than when it has just been painted.

About this painting
This was painted from a photograph on Paint my Photo, in response to this week's challenge on Daily Paintworks. I painted it over three days as the trees refused to form into a painterly order. The lef-hand-most tree was painted and wiped several times. It started out as a very thick tree, but just did not look right. It's much better now I have given it some breathing space.

Limited palette
I used a limited palette of alazarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cadmium orange and a touch of cadmium yellow. Maybe I should have toned down the alazarin to make it less red? Let me know what you think?

"Treehouse" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

My boys and I were playing out in the snow the other day, and I looked up and noticed this beautiful shadow on the front of our house. The morning sun was shining golden, with all of these amazing purple shadows of the tree and their footprints all over the yard... It took my breath away.

"First Snowflakes Over Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, UNFRAMED miniature palette knife oil painting

Okay, this could be titled "Second Snowflakes...." because it has snowed already this year --you  get the gist of the painting, I know!  Winter's only a couple of days away but it is bright, a bit warm, and sunny today.  I know that won't last!  For you snow lovers out there, this one's for you!

I have taken a quick pic of this unframed painting in a matted gold frame, to give you a hint of what it could look like on your wall! (Imagine a linen mat, please.)

"First Snowflakes Over Rocky Mountains", 4"x6" miniature palette knife oil painting on linen panel, $48 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information
