Joyful Day by Kay Wyne

Joyful Day
Contemporary Floral Landscape
60" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I love to paint on a large surface.  It is liberating to make big wide brushstrokes with a brush or apply loads of paint with a palette knife.  A 60" x 36" canvas is fun, challenging and my image/subject matter is always changing....as you can see below I did stop and take some pics along my painting journey.

First, I had an idea in my head and thought that I would sketch it out with charcoal on the canvas.  Then I scrubbed in some colors.  And more colors.  Finally getting the white canvas covered up.

I wanted my color palette to be in cool lavenders and greys....and some greens.  I got off-track as you can see in the fifth photo.  I cut loose with some oranges, reds, and blues.  The next day when I came into the studio, I realized that I had gotten de-railed.  So I spent more than two hours mixing wonderful purples. magentas, greens, and greys to bring the colors back to my original plan.  Of course I used huge amounts of oils and there is texture and depth to this painting.

This painting is drying at the studio, and tomorrow is day #1 in Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Check out Leslie's blog...It's always fun to see what everyone is posting on a daily basis.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Have an artful day.  Kay Wyne

Flutter by Kay Wyne

Flutter
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Thanks to friend Mark Malone, I was able to paint from a beautiful photograph that he had taken of a red dragonfly.  I thought it was a neat shot with vivid colors.  This abstract painting has lots of texture...I used heavy impasto to build up the oils.  The sides of the canvas are painted, so it is ready to hang.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  It is hanging at the studio and would love to have a new home!  Thanks for looking...Kay

Lost by Kay Wyne

Lost
12" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Floral Landscape
I named this painting "Lost" because I was totally lost in it with my palette knife.  Lost in a good way, just letting my mixing skills kick in, and allowing  the painting to happen.  The colors are harmonious because I mixed my piles of luscious oils as I worked through the canvas.  My palette was covered with greens, lavenders, greys and corals.  This landscape painting couldn't get much more abstract, as I was focused on the colors and how they looked in relationship to each other.  There is plenty of texture and paint built up on the canvas, creating more interest for the viewer.  This painting is drying at the studio.  Contact ME with any comments or questions.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Delightful Day

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I thought this contemporary still life was completed several days ago, but have been tweeking it as it sits in the studio drying.  I put in a few more darks and shadows.  The roses have layers of warm grey, ochre and buttery white oils.  This painting needs a frame....possibly one with a pewter finish.  Thanks for looking at this blog....have a delightful day!  Kay

Misty by Kay Wyne

Misty
30" x 30" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting needs a handsome frame.
This palette knife painting has gone through many changes, with layers and layers of color.  I moved and pushed the paint around, changed the colors, changed the horizon line and the path.  It was a misty and moody day in Dallas...and I saw alot of the greys, lavenders and the start of spring green when I painted this.  It has an impressionistic feel to it.  I don't know how long it will take to dry, even with the impasto.....but I think it will look nice framed up.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog.....Kay

Tickled Pink by Kay Wyne

Tickled Pink
18" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Contact Kay for more info on this painting.
Tickled Pink is a palette knife painting that has very thick players of paint on the canvas. I loved mixing the piles of gooey oils in orange, pink, lavender and corals for this contemporary palette knife painting.  I had painted a similar painting several months ago, but it was lacking in depth, so this is my answer to that issue!!!  This is a close-up shot of the painting so that you can see the body and thick build-up of the oils.
Thanks for looking at my art....I hope we are finished with the snow and ice...more painting in the studio tomorrow.  Have an artful day!  Kay

Untitled Floral by Kay Wyne

Untitled
Floral Bouquet
12" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is one of my new contemporary floral still life paintings that is drying at the studio.  It has beautiful violets, muted whites, greys and olive greens in thick layers of oils.  The background has shades of pink, lavendar and greys that were brushed on and blended.  This painting would look great framed up and hung in  a bedroom or living area.  Contact ME for more info on this painting.  Thanks for looking!

Flutter by Kay Wyne

Flutter
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting
Red dragonflies are all over the gardens at the Dallas Arboretum.  I worked off of a photograph taken by friend Mark Malone.  It was an amazing photo, and I went abstract with it.  I exaggerated the colors, and implied that the dragonfly was fluttering over some flowers.  The oils were applied with a palette knife so there is plenty of texture on the canvas.  Sides of the canvas are painted, so framing is optional.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Impulsive by Kay Wyne

Implusive
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Landscape
Lots of color, paint and line going on with this canvas.  The vivd colors bounce off of each other and make the unusual color combinations interesting.  There are lines and shapes scraped into the thick paint.  Sculpting tools, palette knives and brushes were my tools of choice.  I used plenty of impasto so that the paint would dry and have lots of body.  This painting is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay

Joyful by Kay Wyne

Joyful
20" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting is still on my easel, but I signed it and it needs to dry.  I put out greens, whites and grays and mixed piles and piles of paint on my palette, grabbed the palette knife and started with my darks first.  I pushed and pulled the paint, added a small amount of raw umber and cad red to the palette.  I had not planned on going this far with the painting, but once I started, I couldn't stop.  I have a beautiful frame to put on it...will post it framed up when it dries.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.
Thanks for looking.  KMW

Oh Happy Day! by Kay Wyne

Oh Happy Day!
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Floral Still Life
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
I can honestly say that this painting was painted from the heart.  It wasn't hard to paint.  It didn't take long.  It just came out of me.  And it makes me smile,  just as our family news on Sunday.  I wanted to paint something beautiful and lasting....so I went through my reference photos decided on a still life, and picked out a limited color palette of grays, greens and violets.  And just let it go.  The paint is applied with the knife and is really thick and textured.  This painting is drying at the studio.  Contact Kay Wyne for information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog.
