Process in Reverse by Pamela Blaies

In Season

I usually do small studies before painting a larger piece, but this time my process got all turned around. As I set out my composition, intending to focus only on a couple of pieces of fruit, the still life just seemed to put itself together inviting me to create the larger painting, In Season. I liked the colors and light so much, I left the composition right were it was overnight and painted two Petites (6" x 6") the next day. Fun!

God Bless America! by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen

I hope you enjoyed Memorial Day weekend. It seems inadequate to say "Thank You," but how thankful I am to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom. God Bless America!

My Petite Painting Project - 100 paintings in 100 days is coming right along. I think I am getting close to painting #60! These roses didn't last very long and I had too many commitments, so I wasn't able to paint them enough. I think I will go to the market today and get some more!

Rose Care Tip by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

Love these Heirloom garden roses I found at the market! The way the petals curl inward toward the center is so charming. I put them in this footed glass bowl which perfectly shows them off. I am keeping ice cubes in their water, so they won't open up too fast (warm water makes them open up sooner) and hopefully I will be able paint them for several more days.

Yesterday's Rose by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

I cut this rose to paint a little while ago, but didn't get to it that day. Today, I decided I wanted to put it in my composition. Alas, it was to pooped to party and began dropping petals left and right. I still loved its graceful shape and decided the fading beauty was the heart of this little piece.

You Have to Know These Things When You're a King by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

Why are some eggs brown and some are white? Apparently, it's all about the chicken. Hens with white feathers and earlobes produce white eggs and those with red feathers and red earlobes produce brown shelled eggs. I didn't even know chickens had earlobes! My husband often uses this appropriate Monty Python quote, "You have to know theses things when you are a king."

Square Peg Fits by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"

I love this little copper teapot. I like that it is round and perfectly polished to reflect all the color and light around it. Putting it into a square composition was the perfect fit!

Petite Painting #11 by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

Here is Petite Painting #11.  This painting is all about the light which seems to bounce all over this painting.  I toned the linen a bright red to start out. I think this really made a difference in the red grapes looking luminous, since the reddest-red was directly applied to the white canvas.  I used the palette knife to highlight the grapes, stem and the cup's shadow and was able to get the glass to really light up with crisp, thick pure white highlights.

A Little Birdie Told Me, Too by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"

Petite Painting Project #5 - I painted my little springtime friend again. This time with some yellow Forsythia cuttings. I only get a short time to enjoy the bright, yellow blooms in early spring, but what a display! They chase my winter blues away.

A Little Birdie Told Me by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen

Here is painting #4 of the 100 daily paintings I will be completing for the Petite Painting Project. I found this ceramic bird at an antique mall and was drawn to its sweet face. I love the combination of green and purple, so since I still have some redbud blooms, I snipped a few more sprigs to add to this composition. Happy Spring!

Oranges and Indian Hawthorn - Daily Study #4 by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10"
oil

The days are crazy lately, but I am enjoying my little daily studies. I found these beautiful blue berries all over my indian hawthorn bushes, so I clipped some to bring inside to paint. Using the transparent washes that leave some of the toned canvas showing gives an interesting effect when used in conjunction with impasto knife texture in the oranges and berries.

Dailypaintworks challenge painting by Becky Joy

For the Campfire  6x6 oil on canvas panel
$75. buy now ebay click here.
This was certainly a challenge for me. I don't own any small brushes for detail. It was a lot of negative painting to get some smaller edges. I remember now why I don't want to paint detail. Not a lot of fun for me, but the challenge was good for me. It has been a long time since I have done a still life and even longer since I have used ultramarine, burnt sienna and white for a limited palette. I had to dig up an old tube of burnt sienna for this. I haven't had that in the palette for a long time either. About time I used most of it up anyway.
This has been the challenge on the dailypaintworks.  I thought I would do a few challenges to get more work out there more and to challenge myself with things that I don't usually paint.
Anyway, check out the site.
I'm still working on the website. So, I guess for right now this is where my work will be.
I have a workshop in Pasadena, CA for June and a one day plein air in AZ. Check out my workshops at http://beckyjoy.com/workshops. There are still some openings.
