Antique Roses - SOLD

Two art receptions kept me busy over the weekend. I was thrilled with the gorgeous opening reception for my solo show at the Goodrich Gallery in downtown Dallas. There was a nice turnout and several pieces sold during the opening including "Antique Roses."  If you didn't get a chance to make it to the opening, stop by and see it sometime this month - it is worth the trip!

At the Breckenridge Fine Art Center, I got to visit with other artists and collectors at this year's stunning national juried exhibit.  It is on display through September 7th and I'm honored to be included with my piece "Apples and an Antique Pitcher."

I don't do much plein air, but this afternoon was so gorgeous I couldn't resist painting poolside. It was warm with a light breeze - just enough to keep away the bugs! These cheery begonias were in a little shady spot with just a bit of light filtering in.

I've been admiring the buttercups along the road and went on a quest to find some to paint yesterday. It was a little too windy to paint outside, so I brought them in. I love the light play on the petals.  They are like little, pink teacups.

Spring cleaning has been in full gear for me these past two weeks. I've had many projects going on, and after only a few more, everything will be "fresh as a daisy" around here. Speaking of daisies - they sure brighten up a room and they last and last. Their layered petals are especially fun to paint. I love to give them lots of texture. These bright orange daisies seem to be smiling in their setting. Surrounded by blues and greens, they radiate warmth and energy.

I had a wonderful Mother's Day. I talked to my mom and was pampered by my sweet family. I arranged this bunch of Gerbera daisies on Mother's Day. I just love the gorgeous color. Of course, I can't just sit the flowers on the counter to enjoy - I must paint them first! An old-fashioned Ball jar is the perfect complement and the napkin shows off the subtle blue color of the glass.

I purchased a ton of these pansies last fall for a fundraiser at my girls' middle school and planted about half of them right away. I keep the rest hidden in the flower bed, thinking I will plant them any day now. They are blooming beautifully and though I may never get around to planting them, at least I can bring them in to paint. This pewter pot and lid is a cherished heirloom handed down to me from my husband's family.

My daughter attended her final Cotillion dance last Friday and her wonderful Daddy brought her these gorgeous roses. They were so beautiful I knew I had to paint them. On Valentine's Day, I finally had a chance to sit down and paint after I got the kids off to school. I couldn't wait to get started. As I was putting the final touches on the painting, my husband walked in with another dozen red roses and chocolate dipped strawberries for me. What a knight in shining armor he is!

Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly....Knife/Brush painting by Peg Whitacre

I love all the "old songs" which I guess sort of dates me, but I really don't care!  As these hydrangeas began to come to life as a painting I was immediately reminded of that old song title and decided that it fit the subject matter quite well!  Allow me to take this opportunity to wish everyone and their familie and friends a very Merry Christmas and the hope of 2012 being the best ever for all who plow the fields of fine art and craft.  In the grand scheme of things it will be just exactly what each one of us chooses to make it for ourselves.  Happy New Year!!

Summer Tea - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This still life is a part of a monthly challenge in the Floral and Botanical forum in WetCanvas. It is done entirely with a knife, with some highlights finally tweaked with the brush. Most of the times I do not get the confidence to just stop it after working with the knife alone, I get this obsession to tweak something or the other with the brush too. I am slowly getting there to just call it done when my gut says it's done.

This 8 by 10 canvas was one I had discarded, after an unsuccessful attempt at one of my snow scenes. It did not turn out as I had visualized and I decided to paint over it. This month’s theme in the Plant Parade challenge is Sun flowers. It was a revelation to me last year that sunflowers are seen during fall than in summer. I did not know that. Near where I live, we even saw a sunflower field last year, so beautiful! And I was quite surprised seeing the huge size to which they grow, quite astounding! Some of them are taller than I am!

I loved all those blues in this image, as I am in general a sucker for blue and yellow. And given that I had never done a sunflower before, I just had to paint this one. The other references were those of the flowers in fields, or flowers up close. I liked this one better than the others, coz I’ve been meaning to do a floral arrangement still life for a while now.  Let me know what you think of this one.

I have done this still life from someone else's reference after a very long time. All my still lifes are from my own set ups, though I did enjoy this one immensely. Looking forward to doing more.
