"When I Think of You"

It's been a while since I've blogged and I'm out of practice but I feel I need to.  This is a painting I did last year from a photo.  The photo featured different colored flowers but that's where a bit of artistic license takes over.

I planted coneflower (echinacea) around my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  So...of course, I had to paint them too.

I find them to be easy to grown, and cheerful, with their giant heads and quirky style.

I painted several coneflower paintings last summer, in many sizes and styles.  Somehow, this little one was overlooked and never posted.

I tried to keep it fresh and simple, painting with a large brush.  I also tried to keep the colors harmonized.

They have every reason to be shy. The morning sun was just waking them up when I snuck up with my camera to capture the amazing light. I think they may even be blushing a bit.

"Allium Lusitanicum" Original Oil Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

These ornamental onions are one of my favorites, blooming here mid to late summer. One plant grows in a cluster of about 20 flowers and are a much smaller variety, a bit larger than a ping pong ball. The interesting thing about this plant is that it is a perennial instead of a bulb and flowers for much longer.

This is the fourth time I've painted alliums, but the first time I've done so with a brush.

We have two varieties of peonies which have the most beautiful and fragrant blossoms. Although they are full of ants, I can never resist clipping some to bring in the house. They last quite a while in water and definitely bring the summer in.

Took this photo in our yard and thought it had great light.

"Goldfinch on Cone Flower" Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

It has been a while since I have painted with my palette knives. Doing a very similar painting to one that I recently painted with brush really allowed me to compare the way I paint with each. When I went at the prior painting with a brush, that is exactly what I did, just went at it. On the other hand, for this painting I made grid lines and did an under drawing with pencil. Not as fun, or as loose, but I still love the result.

This orchid painting was a photograph I took while at the US Botanic Garden in Washington DC. Such an amazing display; I had never realized quite how many varieties of orchid there actually are. Wish I knew the name of this one--please comment if you know it.

I have had orchids in my home (pre-children) and do love them. It takes a special type of plant lover to keep these going well. Seems a painting of one would be a much better option these days!

Find included two photos of additional orchids seen at the garden. Looking forward to painting more of them. Such a beautiful, juicy color palette of flowers!

"Sphinx Hummingbird Moths" Original Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

This painting was done as a request from one of my sons. For the past two weeks or so these moths have been visiting our zinnias. We all run out to watch them up close and I captured some amazing photos with my I-phone of all things. They look so much like hummingbirds, but even smaller! For a while it was one at a time, but then two would appear together. I was thrilled with this photo, and the memory of my little guys being so intrigued and excited by them. Love capturing special moments like this in a painting!

"Unfurling Zinnia" Original Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

We have been spending a lot of time by our zinnias this last week. There have been hummingbirds, hummingbird moths, and even a few monarchs visiting and collecting nectar. Captured a bunch of great photos and hope to paint more of them. Here is one of the zinnias just grabbing its first few breaths as it opens.

Every year I plant the giant size zinnia seeds by our front entry. It's great to have that color last into early fall and fun to see what colors come up. Besides that, the butterflies love them.

Taking Time to Smell the Roses by Pamela Blaies

This sweet rose came from an old-fashioned climbing rose I have growing on my fence. Over the past few days it has been filled with tons of beautiful, sweet pink roses. I brought an armload in to enjoy, they have a beautiful scent that has filled my studio. I hope to paint several paintings of them, because I know I won't get the chance again until next year. This one is sold, but if you love antique roses as much as I do, keep checking because there will be a few more!
