OK - so the weather here in Texas isn't snowy, yet. But while shopping over the weekend, it was nice to hear Christmas music piping through the speakers, then more Christmas music in the car on the way home. I am excited that the Christmas season is upon us. I am also very happy to share that the painting "He Knows My Favorite Color" found a new home this past weekend!

The workshop this week with Sherrie McGraw has been really great. I'm learning so many new ideas. I've been utilizing her technique of blocking in the composition with abstract shapes to see the idea on canvas before painting. This really makes much more sense to me than sketching it out with pencil. Here is the painting I worked on yesterday and finished up today.

Brass Box and Roses Study

This week, I am taking a still life workshop from a wonderful artist named Sherry McGraw.  We're working on composition and color.  I don't think one can ever learn enough about composition and color.  Here is the study I finished on Monday.  The underpainting and toning were done in Burnt Umber.  I've never used it much in my paintings before, but it has now been added to my permanent palette.  I love it!

I've begun the first stages of preparing for my new studio. I worked all day on some of the work that must be done before the construction can start. It was tiring and I didn't get any painting done, but my new space with be almost double what I have now, so I'm very excited.

This is one of my newest paintings. I love the feeling of it.  It also makes me think... I should have a cup of tea right now!

Luscious Long Stemmed Roses by Pamela Blaies

Long Stemmed Roses and a Copper Pot

These long-stemmed peach roses demanded that I use a narrowly proportioned canvas. I layed them in a haphazard fashion, but carefully so that the elegant stems would traverse this way and that across the composition. The copper pot sits in a sweet spot, perfect for catching all the subtle reflections. I love the luscious feeling that roses lend to a painting.

Home Sweet Home by Pamela Blaies

Roses in Missouri

After about 3 weeks of travel I am so happy to be home. The flowers and landscapes were amazing and lush in the places I visited and I probably have enough inspiration to last me the year. This painting is of a rosebush in Missouri that I saw early one morning while exploring. It was in a perfectly tended little garden nestled in the shadows of other greenery. I liked how the sun was highlighting the little pink roses in various stages of bloom.

My daughter attended her final Cotillion dance last Friday and her wonderful Daddy brought her these gorgeous roses. They were so beautiful I knew I had to paint them. On Valentine's Day, I finally had a chance to sit down and paint after I got the kids off to school. I couldn't wait to get started. As I was putting the final touches on the painting, my husband walked in with another dozen red roses and chocolate dipped strawberries for me. What a knight in shining armor he is!
