Abstract Flowers in reds and orange by Marion Hedger

Every now and then I get the urge to try abstracts. I am thinking about embarking on a series of large ones, but while I'm mulling this over in my head, here is a reminder of my colourful abstract florals, see the original post Here. The top two are 6x8" box canvas and the other two are 6x6" painted on gessoed panel. All are in oils and painted using a knife.

They are available in my Etsy shop

Last Light oil painting by Marion Hedger

Last Light by Marion Hedger
30x40cm (approx 12x16") oil on 2cm deep gallery wrapped canvas

A modern impressionist Provence landscape painting of the remains of a Roman Fort near Le Rouret in the Alpes Maritime, France. I liked the way the sun gave the tree a glow and the evening light formed some great shadows.

The edges of the canvas are painted black, so can be hung without a frame for a contemporary look.

Price includes international shipping

Summer Scent, Modern Impressionist Garden Art by Marion Hedger

Summer Scent by Marion Hedger
Oil palette knife painting
24x30cm, MDF canvas panel

The blue pergola this rose and the pink rose grow on was built by my husband. It took quite some time to persuade him but I am so pleased they are built. They provide the perfect support and backdrop to the roses.

Garden Flowers Inspiration - Red Cimbing Roses

Close up crop of current WIP

And the inspiration...

A climbing red rose.

These roses are beautifully formed and have such a wonderful scent.

St Paul, the area I live in, was renowned for its roses. Apparently the hillsides were all covered with rose nurseries and supplied the perfume trade in Grasse. It's surprising that they grow so well as roses are not normally associated with a Mediterranean climate due to the hot summers. We do have quite a bit of rain in April and often into May which probably bolsters them up for their moment of glory.

Here are some photos from an annual rose festival two weeks ago.

Impressionist Garden Art, Summer Essence, oil painting by Marion Hedger

Summer Essence by Marion Hedger
24x30cm (approx. 10x12") on MDF canvas panel
Oil painting using palette knife

This is the finished painting from yesterday's inspiration.

OH the joys of photshop elements !!! First it kept crashing. Then adjusting the colours UGH. It seems that you adjust one to get it just right and it throws the other colours off. My camera always seems to have trouble with the blues.  and in trying to adjust the photo the pink roses have lost there brightness.

This close-up shows them much better.

How it might look framed

Garden Flowers Inspiration by Marion Hedger

Work in progress, crop by Marion Hedger

April until June is the nicest time in my garden - first the daffodils start nodding their heads, quickly followed by the early irises and tulips. After tulips come the poppies and then the bearded irises. The colours range from the yellows of the daffs, the reds of the tulips and poppies, through to the purples and blues of the irises.

At the moment, the pinks and reds in the form of climbing roses are taking center stage and I took these snaps for my current painting inspiration.

The top image a teaser for the pink rose painting I am working on at the moment. It's nearly finished so all will be revealed tomorrow.
