I was born in Ft. Pierce and lived there all my life. I have an Associate in Art degree from the Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce. I consider myself primarily self taught.I am a member of Plein Air Florida, and the leader of Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. My paintings are in art collections worldwide.I have co-published an article in Plein Air Magazine. I have contributed paintings to Art for Nature, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, Habitat for Humanity and various other charities.I love painting outside using the painting knife. SWAN REFLECTIONS, SOLD
Until a few years ago, I was a runner. Now, with back problems and a bad knee, I walk for exercise. There is one special route I like, no traffic and no scary dogs. While walking this route I pass a pond with two lovely swans. Usually I go in the morning and they just sparkle in the sunlight. This is a pastel I did of one. It is 9x11, matted to 16x18.

We don't get much in the way of autumn colours here in the Alpes Maritime although sometimes you get surprising little pockets where the autumn colours shine. This lovely spot is in the Parc d'Esteron in the Alpes Maritime. We found it by accident down a tiny track we decided to explore during one of our country drives.

Sail Away by Joan Terrell

Sail Away was painted entirely by using a palette knife. The thick texture displays the ripples of paint as the sunlight ebbs and flows over these colorful sailboats and their reflections. Looking forward to more beautiful days on the lake soon.
I'm an artist living in disappearing rural Georgia about an hour outside of Atlanta. I love to create contemporary artwork and am especially inspired by the voices of flowers and whispers from my beloved Appalachian mountains. Sparklers was a demonstration painting at my last palette knife painting workshop of the year that was all about painting Christmas. There's something satisfying in creating reflections of light on a curved surface. Especially more challenging when using a palette knife.
Its time to wind down a little for Christmas and allow some rest and relaxation with friends and family. I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy holiday season. I'm looking forward to many things in the new year - new paintings, new roads to travel, new challenges to solve and new friends to make. I hope you'll be among them and perhaps we'll meet at one of my 2015 art workshops.

I am a professional visual artist in northeastern Newfoundland and Labrador. I am inspired by the ocean and boats. Reflections and colour are a large part of my work as well as creating the nuances in values that make these things so unique.
I am an impressionist painter working with a palette knife, however, I do use other mediums for small paintings and create original prints in the form of linocuts and etchings.

My family and I went canoeing with some friends on the Wisconsin River a few weeks ago. I kept trying to capture a photo of our canoes every time we stopped because I thought it would make a great painting. I'm so happy with the way it turned out and treasure the fun memories we made that day.

A number of years ago my husband and I traveled through the Loire Valley to visit Amboise. We settled in to our tiny room, rested from the ordeals of the car travel, and prepared to dine. As we were walking towards our restaurant, the sun was just beginning to slip behind the river. With patience and persistence, we saw the magnificent results of another day, reflections above and below the water line.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

"Seattle Sunset Reflections" by Karla Nolan
Visiting
Seattle, Washington, a number of years ago was a real treat. I'd never
been to the Northwest portion of the U.S., and I loved the waterfront
views. The clouds at sunset were still vibrant, it was early
summertime, and catching the reflections of the clouds just over the
mountains but in the water, before the sun was too far West, was
challenging to paint. Knowing when to stop painting is always
difficult, hopefully these reflections weren't taken too far!

Tonight I will be at the Royal Palms Resort doing a demo as I have done on some previous Friday nights. It's late notice now, but if you are in the area stop by. I will be there next Friday also. I'll be back in the studio tomorrow packing some sold paintings and prints, cleaning up and getting ready for some serious studio painting. The sales on my e-book, How to Create Beautiful Paintings Using Foundational Concepts have been going very well. There have been a couple of glitches. 1. I inverted two terms, but corrected that and got the new version out the few that bought at first. 2. I set up the sale with paypal, an email with the download link was supposed to go out after your purchase. It has been inconsistent with some people getting the link and others not. I've had to keep an eye on the paypal and send out the link as quickly as I can. So, that is disappointing. I have now talked to the person that works on my website about finding a cart for me to do what I want. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon. I like the effect of these colours together and for me - especially with the square format - it works. Sometimes it reminds me of a cityscape, and at other times of a waterscape and reflections.

I love painting water and reflections. When I noticed this photo in my archive of wetcanvas.com photos, I thought AH-HA I must try that one while I am in autumn mode. It turned out colourful (but that is no surprise for me) but I like it. The water adds another dimension to an autumn scene.
Reflections Tip
Reflections should never be as bright as the original. One way to avoid this is to paint the reflections into the wet paint of the water. This ensures that the colours will always be dulled down.

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

Early on a fall morning the sun breaks softly, dreamlike, through leafy branches and casts early autumn’s golden palette across the creek. Silent water is ruffled by a gentle breeze. Arching over, bending into the quiet waters, a tree is mirrored encompassing, embracing –this painting captures the dreamy reflections and tranquil landscape of one of my favorite spots to paint near my home. It is painted in the traditional plein air oil manner, incorporating some heavy texture.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

I am an American artist and I host a TV Art Instruction show where I teach studio oil painting and plein air painting in the Impressionist style.
