As you read this I shall be on my way to Japan. Hopefully the cherry blossom will be in bloom and I will come away with heaps of photos to work from when I get back. I may also do some sketching while I am there, although I am very hesitant about sketching/painting outside in full view.

To get me in the mood, I cut some of my almond blossom an placed it in this vase. The vase is from a set of three, all slightly different but all with odd angled sides. Talk about making things difficult to paint! This painting is not quite finished - I still have to work on the branch on the table and, now that I see the photo, alter the stem on the left.

I have slightly altered this autumn painting as the right hand tree was bothering me and never looked quite 'right'. I also added more oranges and reds to the central area and using heavy impasto with more colour on the silver birches to reflect those autumn colours.

Tip

For the bark, I used underpainting white for mixing the colours on the trees. This white is very thick and dries quickly and gives a lovely impasto effect.

This is a bit of a departure for me. I don't normally paint abstracts but I have been thinking about abstracts a lot just lately. This one actually started out as a way of using left over paint - but then the painting took over, and needless to say, I had even more paint left over at the end. Painted with a palette knife and card used as a scraper.

I like the effect of these colours together and for me - especially with the square format - it works. Sometimes it reminds me of a cityscape, and at other times of a waterscape and reflections.

Can I join in? Pears and apple still life by Marion Hedger

One of the pears from yesterday's still life was eaten for breakfast, so I made up the trio of fruits with an apple. It had similar colouring to the pears and was a good substitute. It can't understand why it is different though, and can't join in with the pears LOL.
