New "Enduring Spirit" Palette Knife Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Enduring Spirit” ©2015 Niki Gulley
20" x 16” textured oil on canvas

Standing tall and proud, this old soul sinks its gnarly roots into the cliff below, persistent and hopeful. I wanted you to get the feeling of staring up in wonderment like when you were a kid discovering things for the first time – noticing the unusual beauty and complexity of its infrastructure. Both grounded and reaching for the heavens, this organic skyscraper connects us to the mysteries of nature while encouraging childhood dreams.

New "Texas Roots" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

“Texas Roots” ©2015 Niki Gulley
16" x 20” textured oil on canvas

Painted on location, I was drawn to this magnificent Magnolia tree with its massive tangle of gnarly roots. Gripping the water’s edge, it anchors the foreground and leads you down the meandering creek where morning light shimmers across its surface. Adding unexpected pops of color, I wanted this painting to be full of joy while giving you a sense of peace in this protected oasis.

New "Primary Colors" Oil Painting by Niki Gulley from Burano, Italy

"Primary Colors," Burano, Italy ©2014 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting

We have been leading Art Treks in Venice, Italy for the past 6 years and one of the places that I look forward to most when we're visiting is the quaint, colorful island of Burano. Known for making lace by hand, what I particular love are all of the vibrant painted houses and the reflections they cast in the canals. I feel like a kid in a candy store, not knowing what to paint first. It is such a visual feast for your eyes! I was particularly drawn to this scene with the warm reds and yellows contrasted against the vivid  calm blue water, fishing boats docked for the day and some clean clothes drying in the distance.

If you'd like to join us next February in Venice for our Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop, please let me know. For more details, e-mail Niki Gulley or go to nikigulley.com/artreks.

Niki Gulley at 57th Street Art Fair, Chicago, Il - this weekend

"Orchestrating Radiance" ©2013 Niki Gulley
Three 48" x 30" canvases to form a 48" x 90" triptych
Textured oil painting on wrap around canvases

I wanted this large-scale painting to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet's Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the shoreline, shadows and reflections in a curving pattern to add to that mood. Dripping willow leaves frame the foreground as water lilies skim the pond's surface. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" by Niki Gulley

"Kaleidoscope of Dreams" ©2012 by Niki Gulley
Four 36" x 36" canvases to form a 72" x 72" quadriptych • original textured oil painting
or
Enhanced Canvas Prints - four 20" x 20" canvases to form a 40" x 40" quadriptych

In this painting, I wanted you to feel like a little kid again – laying on the ground and staring up into the treetops without a care in the world. I hope you experience the joy of being surrounded by nature and the beauty in this autumn kaleidoscope of colors.

I have received so many requests that I am now offering canvas prints of "Kaleidoscope of Dreams." Four 20" x 20" canvases are stretched on 3/4 inch stretcher bars with the image continuing around the edges to form a 40" x 40" quadriptych that does not need to be framed, just like the original . I have also added thick paint in some of the leaves and trunks to add even more texture and making each print one of a kind. Finally, I have coated the canvases with a UV varnish to protect the paintings. The canvases can be hung right up next to each other or spread apart by a few inches to come out to a maximum of 45" x 45", for only $895. I can also make other sizes or stretch Kaleidoscope of Dreams on deep 1 and 1/2 inch stretcher bars for an additional fee. Please contact me at Niki@NikiGulley.com for more information or to order "Kaleidoscope of Dreams."

Close up detail of the canvas prints with thick paint added to some of the leaves and trunks.

One of the canvases in the set of four showing the painting wrapping around the edges so that it can be hung as is without a frame.

Featured Artist, Niki Gulley, at Spring Gallery Walk, Dallas

"Colorful Transformation" ©2012 by Niki Gulley
textured oil painting • 36" x 48"

With "Colorful Transformation," I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

I spotted this pretty scene when I went to visit my friend Anne. I couldn't see the blueberries on the buses, so I guess they just ended up in the mountains!

Life's Journey oil on canvas by Niki Gulley

“Life’s Journey” ©2011 Niki Gulley
46” x 44” traditional oil on wrap around canvas

Follow the deep wood’s path and wander under a canopy of sheltering leaves, light shifts through each branch and twig. Long, late rays of sunlight pierce the dreaming autumn forest, as you enter shadows dapple your journey. You are walking down a loamy path, filled with color-drenched leaves that invite you into the purple shadows where you may seek your dreams. This oil painting of a tranquil wood’s trail inspires your journey and your dreams with lush colors and rich images of beauty ahead.
