Monterey by Arlon Rosenoff
This was a place on the beach near Pebble Beach Golf Course. Beautiful wind worn Cypress trees.
I paint primarily with a palette knife because it gives me the opportunity to interact with paint in a very tactile, expressionistic way.
Each viewer of my art is able to gain a strong sense my physical interaction with the paint, with every stroke and manipulation visible forever. The surfaces of my paintings are very telling, sometimes resembling a mosaic of palette knife strokes.

I got back to painting today after spending a lot of time working on the website last week. Since I'm not a tech person, I'm sure that this has taken a lot longer than it would others. But, I must say, I am proud of what I accomplished here. I'm still hearing about a couple little tweaks that I need to take care of. I guess the comment form goes too far to the right. I'll have to work on that now. If you see something I should change or is confusing, etc., let me know. Ah, the job of an artist is never done. Didn't we say that about motherhood too? and housework?
My next job will be getting out the newsletter. Oh, and another thing, when I switched my blogs, I lost several subscribers for the blog. I'm picking up some, but it is slow going. So, if you stop by and have not subscribed or wondered why you weren't getting anything in your emails, that's the reason.
This weekend I rewrote my "about me" page. I tried to make it show some of my personality and not be so dry and factual. You might check it out. Then you can see the real me. At least, a part of me.
Tomorrow I will be off working on the house. We are having cement poured for a new patio across the back of the house. Yippeee! But, I will be back online with ustream on Wednesday for the weekly show at 3 pm PDT. So come join me in my studio as I paint.
Talk to ya'all later.

This is from a photo I took of my dog, Stella. I wanted to practice painting her because I might add it to a painting I have in mind. Stella loves to go for walks even if it's to nowhere in particular. She senses that it might be a walk if I put on either my tennis shoes or my gardening shoes.
And as I go outside, she'll usually walk a few steps ahead of me though she has no idea where I might be going. I like indulging and walk a bit even if I' wasn't planning on taking a walk just to make her happy. She has a "happy" walk, almost a skip sort of walk when she's walking with me. And when I took this photo she didn't even know I was capturing her to use as a model some day in one of my paintings.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN
“BEDAZZLING BACK BAY”
5x7 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown
Creativity was something I discussed in this morning’s workshop where I painted this.
Our natural tendency as artists is to see something we’d like to paint, and jump right in.
That’s a mistake. We should pause a moment and think it through from a creative standpoint. What do we want to accomplish, and how can we make it better than a photo?
Color and paint texture can help create the eye-catching flair we’re after. That was the case with this painting. I wanted it to have emotional sizzle.
I’m not interested in creating another painting just like every other painting I’ve seen. I want to paint something FRESH. Surprising. Something filled with emotional impact.
I felt the palette knife and color treatment added that touch of magic to this piece. Click the detail photo for a better look and let me know what you think.

I'm Here - Angel Painting by Judy Mackey
"I'm Here"
8 x 8 inches Oil on Raymar Board
Available - CLICK HERE
Another from my series on Angels. this started as an angel holding an umbrella but I was not really happy with it. So actually this is a re-do - repaint - fixed up - painting. I still wanted the angel to hold an umbrella - maybe I got that idea from an insurance ad, nonethelsss,
I think angels do look out for us......so here is one holding out an umbrella to protect us from the storms. I changed the postion of her arms and her body and changed the color to a more soothing softer shade using the same pallete as the painting I'd done earlier called Angel Thoughts.
The arm positoning was a suggestion from my painting buddy, Barbara whom I paint with nearly every week. It's good having a painting buddy to paint and talk art with. In a sense, she's my painting angel. So if you haven't got one, do find someone to paint with. It "makes" you paint - which is a good thing.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

is an award winning artist who paints exclusively with a palette knife. She holds a fine art degree and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She began painting in oil again after taking a palette knife workshop through the Copley Society of Art in Boston and was immediately hooked. The thick, painterly, yet highly detailed strokes of color are trademarks of her style.
Blue and Gray...Palette Knife Painting by Peg Whitacre
I once read an article that said you could make photos more "impressionistic" by using a 16x20 piece of shower glass (plastic) and place it in front of the subject! Well, I tried it and really liked the photographic results. I only used this method when photographing flowers and it does give an "unusual" appearance. So......I thought this might work with the palette knife and this is the result. The original photo was just blue wildflowers growing out of the cracks in some rocks. This is the result of using the palette knife to reproduce the photo. It looks to me a bit impressionistic and also a bit abstract! Have not yet decided if I like it but thought I would post it anyhow. Comments anyone?

Dueling Grannies by Roxanne Steed
6"x6" oil on gessoed masonite archival artboard
"Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. Christopher Robin to Pooh"
- A.A. Milne
Today I took up the challenge of my artist friend, Norma Wilson, of painting fruit. Following the pink & green kick I've been on...and the fact that I had a bag of Granny Smith apples in the fridge, the biggest part of the challenge was how to keep this simple, yet interesting! I really like setting up a strong light source for interesting shadow shapes...and the colors are always the most fascinating part to me!
Shoveled a good bit of snow on Tuesday. One of my friends suggested this for quicker snow removal! She suggested just cranking this up & backing out of the driveway would do it pretty quickly! hmm, it just might work! Don't know if I can get one hooked up on my van in time for the next storm though ;-) I do love my brilliant friends, I had the best belly laugh over this!

I was born in Essex, England in 1944 and emigrated to Canada in 1957, residing first in Toronto and moving to Calgary in 1960. Now residing in Kelowna, British Columbia. Early influences on my style and career included J M W Turner and John Constable.
Later, the work of the late French minimalist Nicolas De Stael played the most significant role in my development as a painter. My landscape paintings are abstracted to simple forms relying on texture and tonal variations to create drama.
My still-life and flower works are painted with a palette knife and sometimes brush in acrylic either on canvass or panels. I build the shapes of the abstracted flowers, not being at all concerned with the type of flower, by layering subtle changes in tone and colour value, creating my own style of still-life. Most of my landscapes are painted with a brush although occasionally a palette knife may be used for effect.
My paintings hang in corporate and private collections across the world. I've had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the USA.
I'm a member of Landscape Artists International and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

A Budding Romance by Roxanne Steed
"Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze."
- Amanda Cross
8"x6" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival board
The grocery store had these wonderful small phalaenopsis orchids this past weekend. They're also known as moth orchids, they do look a bit like little butterflies have alighted on the stem. I was looking specifically to paint something with green/& red or pink color complements, as I continue this exploration of color.
Aside from buying flowers, I did take a walk on the beach on Saturday, while it was still a 'relatively' warm 22 degrees. Found some pretty beach glass and enjoyed the soft squishiness of the sand, as the earth is frozen solid hard everywhere else past the water line. The last two days have been ridiculously cold 0-12 degree days! I've got to soak up any sunshine I possibly can, it does a world of good when the days are still so very short.

Hi Everyone!
I worked out in the yard this morning and then a little on the computer and managed to get one painting done today. I painted from a photograph that I have had for years from Oregon. I liked the light coming through the trees in the morning and hitting the one tree with the vine growing on it. The photo had a lot going on in it and I needed to do a lot of editing. This is what I came up with.
I've been working on my bio page (its not on here yet). I'm taking the Blog Triage workshop from Alyson Stanfield. I've just started and going through this step by step. The idea is to come up with a story so it isn't so dry. I'm coming up with ideas now I need to translate it into writing, not always an easy task for me. Probably not for a lot of you. I'll let you know how it is coming.
If you haven't noticed, I put the Feb 2011 calendar page on my home page and also under "neat stuff". Its there for you to download if you would like. A new one will be coming each month. I haven't got a lot of "neat stuff" yet, but there will be more ideas coming.
And, also this weekend, I put a new youtube video on my website of a sunset painting demo for you to view. http://www.beckyjoy.com/videos/painting-demos/
Enjoy and I'll be getting more videos out there.
Yesterday, I went to the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale to see the show and visit all my friend, I did the show for about 10 years. If you have never been to the show, it is fabulous. Take a peek of it online at http://celebrateart.com
Remember, if you sign up for my newsletter, you can download a copy of my new ebook with 5 paintings step by step with explanations of color.

Chapel in the Woods...Palette Knife Painting by Peg Whitacre
Here in East Tennessee tiny country churches abound. This particular painting is based on a small church located in the Cades Cove area of Smoky Mountains National Park. These churches are a familiar haunt of tourists, photographers and artists. Picturesque surroundings and the ability to walk through them makes these very popular places to visit. I chose to use this one in a palette knife painting because of its rugged surroundings. Surely the people who inhabited this valley were a sturdy group and many of their buildings still stand. This painting is 9x12 in size and is available for $95 directly from the artist....pwhitacre@att.net or 865-932-6729.

AN ARTIST’S SNAPSHOT BY TOM BROWN
“THE ARTIST’S SNAPSHOT”
4.5x2.5 inch original palette knife
oil painting study by Tom Brown
A picnic table beneath a sheltering tree offered charming material for a beautiful painting.
But time was short. I had only a few minutes; no time for a full-blown painting.
The solution: I whipped out my pochade box and palette knife. Bam! In minutes I had captured the essence of the scene in an “oil painting snapshot.”
I’m including a photo taken while I was there. The photo records the truth of the scene, but my little oil study records the FEELING I wanted to communicate. It’s tiny, but it packs a wallop.

Now for something completely different, a bit of a challenge. Transparent glassware - which turned out to be much more fun than I first thought it might be. I was initially interested in the strong shadow shapes on the table, but as I progressed into the painting, the transparency of the glass (and those shapes that make up those items) became so fascinating to me. I think I have some more subject matter to pursue! Please contact me, roxannesteed@gmail.com for more information about this painting.

Angel Thoughts, Palette Knife Painting by Judy Mackey
"Angel Thoughts"
10 x 10 inches, Oil on Raymar Board
Available for purchase.
I've been accepted into the Figurative Artists International blog! My figurative paintings are sometimes fantasies as depicted by my angel series. This particular painting started out with an Angel doing something else and I actually drew the arms up and outstretched but after staring at this piece for a while, I decided to tone down the colors, making it misty and keeping the angel a little closed and pensive. Sometimes painting over textured paintings is difficult because it's hard to "take away" the textures. And sometimes the texture works and in this one, I'm hoping it works as there is quite a bit of texture all around.

My first post on Palette Knife Painters!
Hi everyone!
I want to say a big thank you for accepting me on the Palette Knife Painters blog. I have really enjoyed looking at all your wonderful work, and am really pleased that I can join you. Let me give you a brief introduction to me and my work. I live in a small town in the middle of England (UK). I have been painting all my life, but started to do more after finishing work to raise my three children. I have had quite a few exhibitions and commissions, so have had the pleasure of selling paintings to others. My youngest child has just started playgroup, so I hope to have more time to paint! My life is pretty busy, especially as my oldest child, who will turn 7 in february, has severe learning and medical disabilities, so hopefully joining this site will give me the incentive and encouragement to paint and post regulary, and concentrate a bit more on my art. I would love to develop a career in painting full time.
Having dabbled in various mediums and styles over the years, I now paint using oil paint and palette knives, hence my excitement in discovering and joining this blog! I love the medium of oil paint on canvas, and I particulary love the effects and results of painting with palette knives.
Anyway, here is my first offering to the blog, a painting done entirely using palette knives with oil on canvas.

"Cliffs at Dingle, Ireland", by Karla Nolan, palette knife, brush, oil painting, gessoed board
A bit more island hopping, from Hawaii to Ireland...I know that I'm repeating myself here, I'm prone to doing that, but there are hundreds of shades of the color green in Ireland! Even in the ocean! These cliffs were precipitous -- you don't want to lose your footing here -- but they were also so glorious -- did I catch them correctly with my painting? I certainly hope so!
"Cliffs at Dingle, Ireland", 12"x16" palette knife and brush oil painting on gessoed board, $215, unframed, s/h to be determined at time of sale. Write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information or to buy through Paypal invoice. Thanks for looking!
I have set up a second website, Paintings On Glass, to showcase my paintings on glass. There is a piece in progress as I type with sailboats. That's a true challenge, showing proper structure and making the water look good. Be sure to check it out, along with my new blogspot, listed below.
Look below for a link to yet another art blogspot, one that I created for my paintings on glass, or click here: PaintingOntoGlass

"Life is an onion and one peels it crying."--French proverb
Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

Art is a way of life and I create 24 hours a day…maybe not holding a brush, but by seeing, thinking and feeling. .

Sloop at Rest in Port Ludlow by Arlon Rosenoff

I paint primarily with a palette knife because it gives me the opportunity to interact with paint in a very tactile, expressionistic way.
Each viewer of my art is able to gain a strong sense my physical interaction with the paint, with every stroke and manipulation visible forever. The surfaces of my paintings are very telling, sometimes resembling a mosaic of palette knife strokes.
Being blessed with an unusual first name allows me to sign my work with my given name.

I am an American artist and I host a TV Art Instruction show where I teach studio oil painting and plein air painting in the Impressionist style.

My Impressionist plein air landscapes, still life compositions, portraits and figure paintings have been represented through prominent galleries for more than 20 years.
My paintings are in corporate collections including the City of Irvine, Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola. My work is often seen in leading art publications like Southwest Art, Art & Antiques, American Art Review, American Art Collector, Art Calendar and others.
I am a former president of the Orange Art Association and past member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and Southern California Plein Air Painters Association.

"Preparations" Onion Palette Knife Painting by Jill Saur
©2010 Onion Palette Knife Painting by Jill Saur, all rights reserved |
I love onions! I love the textures and colors that dance from one to another. There is something metaphorical about the layers that you have to go through to get to the heart of the onion. It reminds me of the depth of close relationships. Sometimes you have to go through the many layers to get to the heart of an individual. As with an onion, sometimes there are tears.
This acrylic painting is on a 9"x12 inch canvas and is ready to hang. The sides are painted. Please contact me for a price.
