Second Large contemporary horse Painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Second Painting for The Kids Korral
36 x 48 inches Oil on Canvas. SOLD

I lined the canvas up next to each other in order to carry through the motions of the paint. I do not have as many progress shots of the second piece because time because a factor and I worked late into the night several days in a row. I will share some of the close ups... it enables you to see the thick layering of the paint.

"The Fox Says" Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

I know foxes seem kind of trendy right now, but my three-year-old has loved them his "whole entire life". This fox was his request, along with the purple background, and will hang in his bedroom.

Have you heard the song, "What Does the Fox Say"? Dancing with the Stars did an awesome dance to it. Here is a You Tube clip if you missed it. So good!  http://youtu.be/NFCtLxuhVvU

Fall Ladies White Pumpkin and Hydrangeas was my class demonstration this morning in North Texas, as we wrapped up three days of painting flowers in North Texas. I completed demos of stargazer lilies, sunflowers, white roses, red poppies, and white hydrangeas. In the afternoons, we worked together step by step to create original paintings, including a study of a large clear vase fondly referred to as "Big Blue". It seemed only fitting on the last day to paint a pumpkin, since the holiday is right around the corner! Here's to a beautiful week to come, cooler weather, and lots of sunshine as we gear up for pumpkin pie and turkey and all the trimmings!

She seemed quite content!  Pretty surprising when you see what was going on 50 yards down the river...

This setting seems to suit the painting a little more.

Class Demonstration
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

Lily Song Stargazers was my class demonstration this morning, starring my new green bowl - the original green bowl, which had appeared in dozens of my older paintings, met a sad demise at the Dallas Arboretum in class one day, when I scooted a table over and it fell to the floor. I like to think these flowers are all saying Ooooo! and Ahhhh! as they gaze at the green bowl, but then my mind does tend to run to silly things like that....

Peaceful Pasture by Pamela Blaies

Peaceful Pasture

7" x 5"

Every time I visit the farm out near the Hill Country where my mom lives, I am inspired to paint landscapes.  There is so much beauty out in the country. I was captivated by this scene when I saw the way the light hit the fence posts and sparkled on the high grass in the distance.  See the auction for this painting HERE.

Day 7, Lake Como - Varenna and Como Town
CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the last day of our Cinque Terre / Lake Como plein air painting and photography workshop, we broke into two groups. Most of the photographers chose to visit the largest town on the lake, Como, while us painters and a couple of others decided to stay right in Varenna and soak up that view and the peacefulness of town one last day. Since the scenery from our hotel was so incredible, we set up our easels right there and either painted the colorful town below or the misty mountains and lake in the distance.

If you'd like to join us in Cinque Terre / Lake Como for our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Sept. 12th-21st, please let me know.  For more details, e-mail Niki Gulley or go to nikigulley.com/artreks.

The Quest
Contemporary Horse Painting Donation
36 x 48 inches Oil on Canvas. SOLD

We have had cloudy skies with heaviness but not much rain, but I cannot get a decent shot of the paintings. This is after I have gone in and tweaked a few area and added some Lavender. If you look up now, you will see it on the nose of the front horse, down the neck and on the back.  Also it swept through the main of the back horse and two places on the ground. With some black I anchored in a few places, but that is NOT black on the rump of the horse...that is 'impossible' to shoot
with no good indirect lighting.

This is the first of the two pieces for the Kids Korral in Oklahoma.

A ragged white shirt hangs on the fencepost in the foreground.

It was obviously left there and forgotten long ago. As I painted this peaceful landscape the shirt kept blowing in the breeze, catching my eye again and again. I couldn't resist putting it into the painting.

Sometimes a small detail like this brings something extra to a painting. I hope you like it.

Fall Sunday Sunflowers and an Iris Garden Giveaway by Nancy Medina

Fall Sunday Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

Fall Sunday Sunflowers was my class demonstration this morning in my North Texas flower painting workshop. We painted a floral setup including Big Blue, my famous (infamous?) blue vase which has made an appearance in so many of my paintings. We are just dipping our toe into the brightly colored water, with buckets of white hydrangeas and stargazer lilies beckoning over the next few days. Stay tuned to see photos on my art blog, as we make flowers bloom in brilliant color! Today's class prize was an entire iris garden in a bag, I gave away seven prize winning rhizomes from my iris garden to the student who guessed the lucky number 3 this morning. Congratulations Bett! I can't wait to see your new garden blooming next spring!

"This is the Life" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

This commissioned painting was done as a gift for a baby shower. The expecting couple love sailing and are using that as a theme for their baby's room. The photo was taken by the mother-to-be. Hope they love the piece--I really like the dramatic size of the vertical panel!

12x24 Oil on Museum Quality Panel

ARTISTS: HERE’S HOW TO ADD INTEREST AND EXCITEMENT TO YOUR PAINTINGS.

The way I FELT about the moment was the real subject here. That’s what I wanted to capture in this painting.

The emotional drama of the moment is sometimes more important than merely recording details. This painting is a good example.

Things that drew me to this were the warm glow of late afternoon sun raking across the fields. The colors in the sky. The textures of dry weeds in the field.

And there was more. The scent of fresh air. Birds in the trees. Breeze rustling in the trees. And the sense of serenity that offered a respite from the hectic pace of everyday life.

Those feelings and sensations were the real subject of this painting. And I felt I succeeded in capturing all that in this piece. I hope you can feel it as well.

If you’re an artist who would like to make your own paintings stand out from the crowd, check out my new VIDEO.

Country Road Take Me Home by Pamela Blaies

Country Road Take Me Home
7" x 5"
oil on linen

My mom was running late when I arrived in Georgetown last week and forgot to leave me a key. While waiting, I took a little time to walk down this gravel road out to my mom's farm as the sun was going down. It was so quiet and peaceful. I was awestruck at how blue the road looked at that time of day. I didn't have my paints with me, so I took some photos and intensely studied the colors I saw to commit the scene to memory. I worked loosely to get the fresh feeling of a plein air piece.

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

"Italian Poppy View" by Karla Nolan, framed palette knife oil painting

In my opinion, the "must visit" time for great poppy viewing in Italy is in the month of May.  The fields are simply alive with wild red European poppies, enlivening the already beautiful landscape.  Skies are blue, undergrowth is green, the air is fresh and warming.  I guess it's obvious that this is the most delightful of scenes to see!

White Tulips on Teal by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

White Tulips on Teal
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

White Tulips on Teal is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio this week - I found two bunches of beautiful white tulips in the bargain bin at the market a few days ago. I snipped and clipped and fed and refrigerated and held my breath that they would survive more than a day. They are on Day 3! Just goes to show you can find treasures if you look carefully! I've been running full steam ahead preparing for my workshop this weekend in North Texas, I've got my new apron packed, my special $1.50 brush (I just use one!) and all my favorite colors. I have my prizes packed, too - we always have prizes! I've decided to give away something different than anything I've ever awarded before - stay tuned to my art bloggy to hear what the winner will receive!

Day 6, Lake Como - Varenna and Menaggio
CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the sixth day of our Lake Como Plein-Air Painting and Photography Workshop, our group went in all different directions. Some folks decided to take an all day cooking class where they learned to make
pastas, soups and entrees from scratch. While the rest of us visited Varenna castle in the morning and afterwards rode the ferry to Menaggio. We explored the town and treated ourselves to a fantastic lunch, dining al Fresco again before heading back to Varenna. With some down time in the afternoon, I enjoyed our amazing view of the lake and town from our balcony while completing this small palette knife oil painting of the colorful buildings below.

For dinner that night, we navigated the switchback roads to the tiny town of Perledo and were treated to a huge traditional seven-course Italian meal. With every plate being created from scratch with local ingredients, the food and wines were amazing. We left fat, happy and slept like the dead that night!

If you'd like to join us in Cinque Terre / Lake Como for our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Sept. 12th-21st, please let me know.  For more details, e-mail Niki Gulley or go to nikigulley.com/artreks.

Autumn Birches oil on canvas panel by Marion Hedger

Autumn Silver Birches
Oil on canvas MDF canvas panel
Palette knife painting
18x24 cm (approx 7"x10")
Available by auction (or buy it now) on DPW
I have slightly altered this autumn painting as the right hand tree was bothering me and never looked quite 'right'. I also added more oranges and reds to the central area and using heavy impasto with more colour on the silver birches to reflect those autumn colours.
Tip
For the bark, I used underpainting white for mixing the colours on the trees. This white is very thick and dries quickly and gives a lovely impasto effect.

Collage of some close-ups and previous painting
Here is a collage showing some closeups of the knife work and the older painting for comparison.
