My kids eat apples like they are going out of style. I like to buy them by the bagful to keep my fridge stocked. When I am painting them, I make them save the pretty ones for last:) These shiny green apples thrown in a basket smelled so fresh, it seemed like they were just picked from the tree. Getting a good photograph of this painting was a challenge because the texture kept reflecting the light. However, in person, I think it is the texture that gives this painting such a nice feeling.

This is a block in today on an 11"x14" canvas panel. I wanted the old house illuminated by strong moonlight. The colors are all cooled by the night sky. The white house and fence are painted in a green color. I'll have to take some more photos tomorrow when it's sunny. I took the photos at night so the lighting wasn't very good. Hence, the colors do not show well.

This is the finished painting. I didn't have the light on the pole lit, because I didn't want another light source in the painting. I'll post another photo tomorrow.

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the painting can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

Hi everyone,

Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen and Oak trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, scarlet and tangerine, with each light breeze. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, a band of slender straight trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling tumble of amber and crimson. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the wind whistling through the foliage.

Crystal Cove state beach in southern California is a little taste of going back to the 

turn of the century in California. The shacks on the beach beckon one to go to another place in time.

A simpler, more wholesome time when just going to the beach was an event and that was all you needed.

My palette is limited and the setting sun is captured on the side of the old house and the umbrellas.

Here is the little rooster that I was planning on working on last week, but never got to it. This boy has some palette knife work on him too..Right in the head area... I felt like he needed a bit more texture...

New Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush Painting by Niki Gulley

was inspired by a recent trip to the Texas Hill Country. This spring conditions were perfect, and the bluebonnets were amazing! While we were near Fredericksburg, we took a scenic drive along the Willow City Look and as we approached the top of a hill about half way around, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes, create a harmonious landscape that flows with light, texture and color, and suggest a feeling of optimism about what's to come.

       I just completed this large painting of a high desert gorge, using two recently down smaller paintings of the same subject.  The place in the painting is off Highway 89 in northern Arizona near the Vermillion Cliffs.  This gorge feeds onto the much larger Marble Canyon gorge which funnels the Colorado River into the Grand Canyon.  Incredible country!

Quick Study for Commission

This week, I've begun a commissioned project I am very excited about. I've been working with pictures of the children, doing tons of sketches to get to know their gestures and expressions. I haven't settled on a composition yet, but today I did a quick color study with one composition I have in mind. I can see many views of my backyard from my studio and I was able to reference parts of my yard to make a luscious garden setting.

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.

Complimentary colors and confident strokes make this piece interesting.

I used a photo as reference which had green umbrellas. There was just too much green.

The red stands out and creates an interesting work with the imagination wondering what exactly is beyond the fence. All draped in sun light, this is a favorite of mine.

New Sunflower Painting by Niki Gulley

Sun Drenched III was inspired by our trip to Provence, France last summer. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers and lavender were in full bloom. While we came across many fields of lavender, we had to search a little harder for sunflowers. Of course that meant sampling more of the local cuisine and wines for much needed fuel as we looked! (My husband likes to say we have to suffer four our art.)

When we eventually came across these sunflowers, I knew immediately they would make a perfect painting. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the sun dappled path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and a beautiful summer day with a few peaceful clouds drifting by made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is so full of color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece immediately lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.
