Earth Child Sunflowers was one of my class demonstrations in North Texas recently, created quickly with my 3/4 inch flat $1.50 brush, the one brush I use for almost every painting in Flower Mound Studio. How I love these brushes! I received a note this morning from a collector who lives in a village near Leeds, in the United Kingdom, just north of London. She was kind enough to share a picture of her region when I asked (I am ALWAYS wanting pictures of the English countryside!) and the breathtaking skyline of Whitby, quaint orange buildings along a riverfront with the ruins of a gothic abbey along a clifftop in the distance, once featured in Bram Stoker's Dracula! Je T'aime Sunflower Bouquet was one of my six class demonstrations recently, clearly, I could not resist painting this new vase again! I went into the market today and perused the display where I found it, and not another vase like it was left. It's no wonder these disappeared so quickly. There are still plates, saucers and bowls that match. Who knows, I may have to give in to the temptation and add to that collection soon. Speaking of temptation, visit my blog today to see one of the fun Valentine's day workshop giveaways all wrapped up with a big ole bow on it! Some lucky artist is going to take this home. Do you think the winner will notice if some of the chocolates are unwrapped and missing? hmmmm... My Valentine's workshop for Painting Romantic Flowers and Dresses is filling up fast, must be those rumors about a chocolate fountain!

This was inspired from a small field study. I painted here during Paint Historic Waxahachie and was so impressed I took my husband back. We spent a couple of hours here painting and taking photos.

Something Borrowed Sunflowers and Daisies was one of my class demonstrations during my St. Louis workshop, and is named in honor of the cool vase that my hostess Sharon let me use for the setup that day. Traveling to workshops is always so fun, but finding the right vase upon arrival can sometimes be a challenge, since the one thing I don't ship ahead are my glass vases. I'm at the mercy of my students, who always seem to bring me the most amazing vases, and next is the whole I become obsessed with a particular vase thing, then I'm on Ebay when I return home searching for that yummy vase I became obsessed with. If it's not one obsession, it's another, right? At least it keeps me out of the mall...

Moonglow Sunflowers is the newest still life in Flower Mound Studio this week, painted on an evening when the moon was bright after a rainy July day. These sunflowers and lilies are still fresh, though my peonies bid their adieu this morning after a ride back and forth to the farm with me for one more painting. I'm still having fond thoughts of the warehouses of fresh blossoms that filled Floral Row in downtown St. Louis where I visited last week, and wondering what was in those big rooms I didn't even venture into. I suppose one giant rubbermaid cart piled with flowers was enough for one workshop. Something to dream about until I return there to teach again next spring!

I wanted to go big, bold and bright with Flame and Shadow, so piled under layers and layers of color, ending with thick, fast, large strokes of hot color. It's a toasty day in Texas this week, and my helpers are lounging indoors under the AC, snoring on their super cushy orthopedic beds, awaiting second or third snack time. It's important they receive multiple snacks to help them survive the interminable few hours between their three meals a day.... With the exception perhaps of never getting to taste chocolate pie, it might be really nice to be a Pug.

Flower Painting Workshop

Sunflowers and Clematis was my morning demonstration today for my workshop in Lees Summit, Missouri. I was absolutely delighted to be able to use this beautiful vase belonging to the workshop hostess, Connie, whom I suspect is a cousin to Martha Stewart, considering Connie's amazing lunch spread replete with key lime pie for dessert garnished with fresh strawberries! What a perfect day painting with lovely gals from around the region, and what an awesome vase color for bright, cheery sunflowers to perch within! I suspect I am about to engage upon a quest for this pot's twin, either on Ebay or at the HomeGoods store. Tomorrow morning, I'll be painting the largest class demo I have ever completed. Stay tuned to see if I can fill up a Big Ole canvas in under 4 hours!

Happy Days Sunflowers was my demonstration for the Trinity Arts Guild in North Texas yesterday evening, one of the oldest art clubs in the state. What an honor to paint for a group of master painters and teachers, and the nicest group of artists you could meet, including one of my favorite instructors and friends, Fran Chausse White! I named Happy Days tonight in honor of what I really think should be happening in terms of life today. Am I the only person who wonders about this new age which finds death and sadness and horror in movies, television, and film entertaining? There are not enough happy days in our lives, and I am determined to keep right on swimming against this awful tide. Read more...

Wildseed Sunflowers was my class demonstration for my workshop in the Texas Hill Country last weekend. One day at lunch, the ladies and I paid a visit to Wildseed Farms, where there were fields of poppies that required my attention!

Great news! A few seats are open Saturday in my Dallas Arboretum workshop - the gardens are full of color so put a little joy in your brush and let's make brilliant flowers bloom in oils. Open to beginners to advanced painters, and those who use acrylics as well as water-based oils, we start the day with fresh flowers and donuts, so you'll want to arrive early to ensure they are extra fresh. To end things nicely, here's a photo of my new boss, Studio Director AnnieBee. Currently she is looking absolutely adorable, sound asleep on her pillow, and snoring like a sailor.

Summer Season Sunflowers and Day Lilies was the morning class demo today for my workshop in Fredericksburg, Texas, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. We woke up this morning to sunshine and country breezes, a perfect day to spend with friends painting, a perfect day to enjoy fresh German pastries, and a fabulous day to go out for dinner after class for excellent and seafood and chocolate torte desserts all around (yes, I noticed there were two references to desserts, and one reference to painting....) !

I get such joy from seeing my students excited about their paintings. These ladies converged from all over the country to gather for some loose, bright application of color emphasizing an energetic, free approach to making brilliant flowers bloom in oils. What an amazing life it is, to wake up each morning now knowing I am now officially doing the thing I love most of all - teaching art. I sincerely hope each of you has found a way to follow your bliss. I'm so glad you are here with me, on this journey. Have another cheese kolache and let's get to painting!

Coastal Color Sunflowers is the newest small daily, continuing the lavishly lavender theme this week. I'll be leaving Thursday for the Hill Country and the historic German town of Fredericksburg, Texas. Dozens of art events are kicking off in Fredericksburg, which is hosting the Oil Painters of America show. I'll be the featured artist Friday evening at the Good Art Company gallery and my workshop begins Friday morning. There are still a few seats open in my 3-day workshop this weekend, so don't delay - let's share some German pastries, look out over rolling cabins and hills from the classroom windows, and make flowers bloom in brilliant colors!

I am still waking up each morning, 2 weeks after quitting my 6-figure corporate job, living a life in between. Between the time when I should have put on my office clothes, braved the Dallas traffic, and spent my day in a glass building and instead am now waking up with snoring pugs curled around me, the sunshine streaming in, and knowing that my day will be filled with art, packing and shipping paintings, ordering paints, cleaning brushes, and moving through a life filled with color.

I'm walking into the wilds away from the corporate jungle,

with my eyes wide open, and hoping for the best.

I remember the moment when I was a senior in high school, when my parents asked me what I really wanted to be when I grew up. I told them I wanted to be an artist. We were standing outside, in front of the house, in the driveway, and it was around 5 pm, I could tell from the light and the position of the sun. Sometimes we understand without even knowing it when a pivotal moment occurs in our lives, when some small act, or statement, has significance that will resonate years later, a memory that will survive the detritus of time. I remember that moment as if it were yesterday. And I have finally arrived at the brink of that dream. I do not know if I will survive financially. But I know that I have leaped off the treadmill and chosen a path of freedom. I'm walking into the wilds away from the corporate jungle, with my eyes wide open, and hoping for the best.

"Sun Salutations" New Sunflower oil painting by Niki Gulley

I painted these sunflowers with extremely thick paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I've painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look.
