"Oaks Mosaic of Color and Light" oil painting by Karen Tarlton palette knife fine art impressionism

Such a strange world right now isn't it? We need to stay safe and away from crowds but also keep sane. Go on walks, read, paint.
Remember to enjoy life and all it's beauty even without lots of social interaction we can keep our routines to some extent.
Here is what I painted yesterday after looking at photos from my trip to Northern Calif. over the weekend.

San Diego Starry Skyline painting by Karen Tarlton palette knife fine art impressionism

t's not only the color thing that thrills me, it's the texture. Lots of broken color helps leave a soft coastal impression I think.

"Solo Act: Red Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

You may have noticed that I love the color red, the energy, the vibrancy, the fire.  And so on.  I painted this Indian Paintbrush a few years back and was recently contacted by some folks in California interested in purchasing it.  I enthusiastically agreed, of course!  It is going to a good home and I am so happy!

Oil Sketch

Here is a small, 6x8 inch sketch on canvas paper, of a scene from Laguna Beach, CA.

I usually don't work on preliminary sketches before working on larger paintings, I like to dive in and get right to it. I think the spontaneity one achieves on those first tries gets lost the more you reproduce your results. But, I was at the local art store recently, shopping for a new large wooden palette, when I saw this awesome little wooden oil sketch box.

Of course I had to buy it!!

The sketch pictured at the top of this post is the first result from this oil sketch kit. I love it! Great portability, perfect for smaller paint tubes. And since I'm a 100% knife painter, there's no worry about carrying turp and brush cases.

Looking forward to creating many many more. The question now is, do I keep calling the small paintings "sketches", or regard them for what they are, complete finished paintings in their own right.

Hmmm...

Spring Sparkle Geraniums and Caught in a Flower Painting Love Triangle - Nancy Medina Art

 Spring Sparkle Pink Geraniums

Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Spring Sparkle Pink Geraniums was one of my recent class demonstrations and the flower models are already blooming happily on my sun porch, as part of my "paint the flower, plant the flower" recycling program. I'm leaving for Tennessee Friday for a full workshop near Nashville, but I have a confession to make. I am so excited about Tennessee and seeing all those friendly southern ladies, but Sonoma, California, is on my mind! Paint Brilliant Sonoma is coming up soon. Is it okay to be in love with two venues at the same time? Will Nashville begin saying awful things about Sonoma on its Facebook page if they discover I am practically seeing them both at the same time?

Regardless, the evening wine tasting and hazy mornings over flower filled fields with clusters of grapes catching the dawn dew are calling my name. I would move back to California in a heartbeat, if I could afford the car registration fees. At least I can visit occasionally, and take you with me! Here's the squeeze on Sonoma:

Blue Hearts Cottage - Flower Painting Classes and Workshops by Nancy Medina Art

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1687918

Blue Hearts Cottage
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Blue Hearts Cottage is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, a little scene from Coronado Island, California. I took the liberty of adding two tiny carved hearts under the window, the Valentine's Day holiday lasts quite a while here, it seems. Just inside the entryway on the little carved table in the foyer you'll find a box of Godiva chocolates. I saved one of the truffles especially for you...if you hurry it might still be there!

"Grey Day in the Foothills" by Northern California Artist Mark Bidstrup

Grey day behind our house in the foothills. We don't have many foggy days up here, but a few did creep up from the valley for some nice atmosphere. A nice study from a location that quickly drops off into the middle fork of the American River.

6"x8" Oil on Linen panel. $155.00 shipped. This looks great in a black plein air frame.

I'm super excited about my first Sonoma, California workshop in the spring, we'll be painting brilliant florals, and also be dipping into some fun silk scarf painting projects. You are invited to join me, but don't delay, class is filling super fast! I can't imagine a more beautiful place on the West Coast to paint in the spring, I'm already picturing sunrises over the vineyards, rolling hills, and yards and yards of silk covered in bright flowers! I need to calm down and go eat some chocolate or something...

"Hot Hot Hot", original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan

We were in northern California recently, specifically Sonoma.  What a sweet town, you should visit it, really!  I slid into the alley off the main square and returned to see the bouganvillea I saw a few years back.  Still blooming away, still impossible to paint, but easy to photograph.  So, my approach here is catch the color.....that's what it's all about, isn't it?  "Life is short, use color!" is my motto.  What's yours?

"Hot Hot Hot", original watercolor painting, matted to 8"x10", $55 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button located on my blogspot listed below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information
