VIDEO TUTORIAL, COLORFUL SUNSET PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

I love painting the final colors in the sky at the end of a day. I often take my small, compact paintbox outdoors to one of my favorite locations shortly before a good sunset, and try to capture those effects in a painting.

Every sunset is different, even if I've painted at the same location on a previous day. This painting is one of my favorites, and it's been hanging on my studio wall since I painted it. I finally decided to let someone else enjoy it now. Hope you like it.

Check out my video tutorial if you’re an artist and you’d like to learn how to paint dazzling sunsets. It’s a short video but it’s PACKED with tips and techniques to almost GUARANTEE a “keeper” every time. And you can use these same techniques to create beautiful, fresh paintings with every new sunset.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA COLORFUL IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

This is a picturesque side street in Santa Barbara, California.

I thought it would be interesting to show a photograph of the scene to compare with my artistic interpretation of it. I was pleased with this painting and I hope you like it too.

Oh, Happy Day! by Pamela Blaies

Copper Teapot and Lemons
oil on linen
11" x 14"

Getting home from Georgetown Art in the Square Monday afternoon, I looked at my truck - packed to the brim with festival stuff and waiting to be unloaded. Then I walked into my studio, which looked like a tornado hit it and my kitty had coughed up a hairball in the middle of the carpet. I felt exhausted, so I decided "I'll think about that tomorrow." (I had to work that last quote in - I just finished reading "Gone with the Wind" last night.) Well, anyway, I haven't been able to do any painting all week, but my studio is now reorganized and looking fantastic. I also received a call from my gallery, Stinger Studio in Georgetown, with good news of several sales. Best of all, a new shipment of canvases just arrived! Painting day - Oh, happy day!

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

Clear Skies Sunflower was my afternoon class demonstration in Melbourne, Florida, making its debut in Flower Mound Studio today. This evening I finished work on a 48X24 Cherry Blossom Path based on the flowers of the Dallas Arboretum, and I posted the painting on my blog today. I'm looking forward to seeing all of these colors in bloom again next spring during the Dallas Blooms Festival, I'll be setting up for a plein air day and sure hope my painty pals will join me. Stay tuned to the art blog for details to come! My November 9 Dallas Arboretum class is full, but I still have seats open in my 3 day workshops in North Texas in the next few weeks. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make brilliant color bloom!

"Lightning Over City Lights" by Karla Nolan, miniature, lightning, twilight, night scene

Here is another entry into my weather or lightning series.  We live near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains here in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the weather can be quite entertaining!  As I drive west towards the mountains at twilight and at nighttime, the flickering lights up on the hills overlooking Horsetooth Reservoir to the west and looking out at the Great Plains to the east grab my attention.  Add in some lightning and, man, you have got a show!

Heart Haven Pink Roses and a North Texas Workshop by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Heart Haven Pink Rose
by Nancy Medina
10X8
Oil on Archival Panel

Heart Haven Pink Rose is the new daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, a small study for a private lesson earlier last week. I'm starting work on a set of hydrangea commissions for a beautiful North Texas home this week, and packing for a 3 day workshop in Irving, Texas. I can hardly wait to see what fresh flowers will be available when it's time to shop for class! Such a highlight of this new job, having to go out and buy all my favorite flowers, paint them, share my love of painting with others, and then have a house filled with blossoms for weeks afterward. I love my job!

Visiting Bellagio with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams, Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop 2013

8" x 10" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 5, Lake Como - Afternoon location: Bellagio
CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

After lunch, we rode the ferry to the famous town of Bellagio. Most folks chose to take the afternoon off from painting and shooting, and instead stroll the colorful town and do some shopping. Scott and I offered to take all the gear, and we snagged a bench to relax along the town's promenade. The location was beautiful with the pastel hued buildings set against the mountain backdrop and azure water in the foreground. Working with palette knife and thick paint, I quickly sketched in the scene before we caught the last ferry back to Varenna.

We finished the day with another amazing meal and new found friends!

If you'd like to join us in Cinque Terre / Lake Como for our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Sept. 12th-21st, please let me know. 1519 Early Morning Water Lilies Plein Air

This one is from last week mostly, brought it back to the park today.  I tweaked a couple of things.
The egret in the painting was there in that spot last week, he posed very nicely.  This week there were some white ibis there.

Painting is oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches.  <!-- NODP begin dailypainters html template 257162 --><form style='margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:10px;' action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post" target="_blank"><input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_xclick"/><input type="hidden" name="business" value="lorartbus@aol.com"/><input type="hidden" name="item_name" value="1519 Early Morning Water Lilies Plein Air"/><input type="hidden" name="item_number" value="1519 Early Morning Water Lilies Plein Air 527_520_257162" /><input type="hidden" name="invoice" value="527_520_257162"><input type="hidden" name="amount" value="200" /><input type="hidden" name="shipping" value="0"/><input type="hidden" name="no_shipping" value="0"><input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="USD"/><input type="hidden" name="lc" value="US"/><input type="hidden" name="bn" value="PP-BuyNowBF"/><input style='margin-top:5px;margin-right:10px;' type="image" width="62" height="31" src="http://www.dailypainters.com/images/paypal_button.gif" border="0" name="submit" alt="Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!" align='left'><div>Buy this painting on PayPal</div><div>Price: $200 USD</div><div>Or, <a href="mailto:Lori.mcnamara@gmail.com">send me an email</a></div></form><!-- end dailypainters html template 257162 -->

Day 5, Lake Como: Villa Balbianello
CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the fifth day of our Cinque Terre / Lake Como Art Trek, we awoke to a gorgeous morning. We rode the ferry to Lenno, and then arrived in style by private water taxi at the beautiful, lush Villa Balbianello. Perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, the manor and tropical gardens are immaculately maintained and exquisite. While difficult to figure out how to capture that beauty on film or canvas, we were up for the challenge and loved every minute of the idyllic setting.

"Dusk Near Lake Como, Italy" by Karla Nolan

We have had the good fortune to visit Italy in the last several years and this was the first time I had been so far north.  Previously I'd been to Tuscany and Umbria.  Fiametta and Piero were our bed and breakfast hosts and we were most spoiled by their breakfasts, the view from their terrace and garden, and of course, their delightful company.  The nearby ferries ran regularly to other towns, including Bellagio, so rather than drive all the way around the immense lake, we could just sort of hop around on the water!  It was an amazing trip, we found a favorite pizza place just down the hill and at dusk the water simply glowed with reflection.  Viva Italia!

"Romy" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

This painting was done for a friend who has been wanting a special painting done of her dog. I hesitate to say this, but Romy is not only adorable (soft, fluffy, mid-size, great color, curly hair etc.), she is also one of the most well-mannered dogs I've come across. Granted, she does dig in the garbage, lock herself in the car, and get herself into other assorted puppy predicaments... Well, she's a beautiful dog anyway. :)

Fall Garden Pansies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio. We had a special visitor today, Bett came for a private lesson, and rocked her pink and white roses in bright colors. AnnieBee and Hannah assisted us in the studio, of course, providing snorts of appreciation. This week I pack up for a fall workshop in Irving, Texas, and I'm excited to see some familiar faces returning to join me for flower painting again. I hope to see you there!

"Pink Poppy" by Karla Nolan, framed palette knife oil painting

This is a slightly older palette knife oil painting I have always been fond of but no longer have room for it on my (tiny) studio wall, so I priced it as a bit of a bargain.  It is already framed and would be a lovely addition to any room, it could fit right over that nightstand by the antique lamp you've been trying to make into a fitting vignette!

Lake Como Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

9" x 12" oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 4, Lake Como:  CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

The next day, we loaded everyone into the van and headed to the beautiful, peaceful town of Varenna on Lake Como. After checking into our hotel with incredible views of the lake and town below, we visited the lush Italian garden of Villa Monastero. It was a perfect afternoon and while the photographers strolled the gardens, we set up our easels by this gorgeous colorful flower bed and the ornate villa behind it. I loved the lion statues adorning the entry and set out to capture the scene before we lost our light. Finishing a little early, we grabbed a glass of prosecco and took in the tranquil views across the lake. For dinner that night, we sampled the local fish and pastas, washed down with a delicious red wine.
