Irish Sea, November, by New York artist, Celeste Plowden

The Irish Sea looked dark on this late afternoon as we drove by.  I caught the last phase of sundown, as it was setting over the water, and ships in the distance.  This seascape was painted entirely in various shades of Prussian blue, except for the faint wash of pink and lavender over the harbor. Acrylic on archival and acid free canvas board, UV varnish, ready to pop into a standard size 11x14 frame. painted with a palette knife for texture. 11x14, available at my Chairish store.

"Vibrance" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

Another Colorado Rocky Mountain sunset, this with particularly vibrant colors, hence the name! This one is big enough, once framed, for a fireplace mantel!  More of my "I Love Colorado!" series.

"Twilight Over the Rocky Mountains" by Karla Nolan, miniature unframed palette knife oil painting

A little gem of a painting, miniature, actually, this is to me the quintessential Rocky Mountain/Colorado sunset.  I have always been struck at how the mountains are a dark silhouette while the remains of the sun and the successive colors over that, then the various blues of the skies are layered.  I love Colorado!

"Moonlight Mountain Triptych" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Quite a task, this painting on glass.  It took forever to compose and then execute but I'm very satisfied, happy, with the results.  The photos don't do it just but then this is the sort of artwork best seen in person, I guess.

"Moonlight Mountain Triptych",10"x22" painting on glass (measured edge to edge glass) in frame shown, $675 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, click my blogspot button below or write me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Busy Night Skies" by Karla Nolan

My take on painting in any medium is this:  have fun!  Don't take yourself too seriously.  Experiment.  Try not to stress (good luck with that!)..

"Busy Night Skies" is my interpretation in palette knife oils of what any given moment in the skies -- moon shimmering through the clouds, possible lightning strikes occurring, clouds rolling in, satellites blipping over the landscape.  And of course it all occurs over my beloved Rocky Mountains!  I had fun!

"Moon at Midnight" by Karla Nolan

Yes, I am at it again, another night sky scene.  There is always so much happening in those dark skies, the moon shining, the stars shooting, the hint of a possible storm.  I am most intrigued, as I hope you are, also, by the mystery of the night!

I noticed the other night that we had a full moon.  It was just before our snowstorm struck, yet again delaying Spring.  Weather is rarely dull here in Colorado; wait 20 minutes, it'll change.  Then I started thinking about the "blue moon" -- two full moons in one month.  I have no idea if this is the month for such an occurrence but I am enraptured with painting moonscapes.  They are just so much fun!  Here's one for you....

"Ah, Venezia!" by Karla Nolan, italy, venice, dusk, sunset

I guess Italy must be on my mind these days, having recently posted a Tuscan poppy fields and now a sunset in Venice.  Italy is one of the most wonderful places on the planet, I have had the best times there with the delicious food, wonderful wines, and lively and enchanting people.  Venice is a true gem, the canals and sights are mind boggling.  Do go there if you can!

"Full Moon Night Scene" by Karla Nolan, miniature palette knife oil painting

Ah, a return to the silhouette of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just outside my front door....I know I sound a bit obnoxious, going on and on about what a privilege it is to live where I do in northern Colorado, but it truly is the case!  This is the sort of view in which I get to indulge myself and I never tire of it...welcome to my sweet world!

"Lightning Over City Lights" by Karla Nolan, miniature, lightning, twilight, night scene

Here is another entry into my weather or lightning series.  We live near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains here in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the weather can be quite entertaining!  As I drive west towards the mountains at twilight and at nighttime, the flickering lights up on the hills overlooking Horsetooth Reservoir to the west and looking out at the Great Plains to the east grab my attention.  Add in some lightning and, man, you have got a show!

"Orange Electricity" by Karla Nolan, lightning, weather, skies, night, affordable

Sometimes I find it difficult to blog my artworks as frequently as I do on the internet.  The last thing I want to do is bore anyone or become too predictable about what I paint.  So I try to jumble it up a bit, sometimes putting up flowers, skies, travel memories.  I have been chomping at the bit to show you this little dandy, honestly!  Some of the most enjoyable paintings I have worked on come from my imagination, some of which is based upon research of the subject matter at hand (or palette knife!), some of it based upon prior observation, especially anything involving the skies.  I hope you like this as much as I do, it was a blast to paint!

"Dusk on Lake Como" by Karla Nolan

Recently we traveled to Northern Italy and stayed at a B&B in Plesio, on Lake Como (Lago di Como in Italian, the most musical of languages).  I was quite surprised at the size of the lake, miles longer than I dreamed it would be.  My husband does all the research and makes the reservations for dwellings on our trips, I'm sort of like the little puppy dog, tagging along.  Mind you, I do make my special requests periodically, but I'm a perfectly happy camper with him lining things up.  Maybe I'm lazy.  Naaah!

Piero and Fiametta were the most wonderful, gracious hosts at their bed and breakfast.  This was our view from the front door of our one bedroom apartment.  It was breathtaking!  Piero also paints and Fiametta is an avid and enthusiastic cook.  We had the most splendid of times in Northern Italy, close to the Alps.  I hope I've done this one evening justice and conveyed to you the warmth of that special time.

Down To Earth Sinks The Sun

11"x14" oil on linen mounted on archival board, currently unframed

Ah, the brilliant light show at the end of some days, the last rays of light transforming the surface of land into a rich velvet blanket of deep color...until total darkness sets in. There's something calming, and very satisfying seeing that transition of dusk. This is a place I pass by on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, on my way down to Norfolk (from last October).
