Hydrangea
20 x 20 inches Acrylic on Canvas.

The sixth day painting is an abstract Hydrangea painting.  This was painted at the end of a workshop with a student from Ohio in 2011. I found it when we moved and really think the colors are pretty. I am hoping someone adds their name today special for this floral. Let me know if you are specifically entering for the flowers today.

*Remember the winners will be chosen AFTER two days because the blog comes out on one day but it is emailed the next to my subscribers, so there will always be a delay of one day.

*If you live out of the continental USA and you win, you must cover your shipping. Just email me to be enter for the 12 Days of Christmas Give Away. Enter just once for the full contest.

For our household Advent is underway.
Terry and I do a short bible study every morning at the table with our breakfast. We are adding advent to our daily routine and lighting the first candle on our wreath this week.

And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  Luke 1: 17

I love the first snow of winter! We just moved from Southern California to the east coast so we're looking forward to it!
All the leaves are down and the trees are ready to glisten with some prismatic color!

Thought this would inspire the feeling of Christmas as it seems to be in the air already! So many people love to bring out their seasonal decor for the holidays. It's amazing how quickly the lights and trees have gone up--it has all snuck up on me this year!

Twinkle Toes Stargazer is a new small work, I couldn't resist creating at least one flower that reminded me of the holidays this morning, before diving into preparations for a feast with friends today and Mom tomorrow, and putting up the Christmas tree this weekend! This is my favorite time of year, and our first year to have little Hannah the Rescue Pug as an official part of our family. I hope you have something that smells absolutely delicious cooking today and loved ones nearby, two and four footed alike!

The fifth day painting is a pair of horses in the painting.  This was in front of the fire last weekend just playing with my knife and colors. Felt like a kid with new crayons.

Foxglove Lane Cottage Garden by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Foxglove Lane Cottage Garden
by Nancy Medina
12X16
Oil on Archival Panel

Foxglove Lane Cottage Garden is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and is based on the gardens of Coronado Island, California. We toured this garden during my class there near San Diego a few weeks ago, and even though the air was chilly, the flowers were still in bloom on the rose arbor above. We were fortunate to bump into Juan Flores, the architect of Coronado flower gardens, and multiple blue ribbon award winner for the Coronado Flower Show. Juan loves to share his tips for growing the best flowers year round. Juan told us that he sometimes cannot sleep at night, he is so excited about his gardens, planning what he will plant and what colors he will grow in the coming season. Thanks so much Juan, for your generosity and your vision, you are truly an artist!

Wind Tossed Tulips
by Nancy Medina

SOLD
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel
Wind Tossed Tulips is one of several paintings that are new in the studio this week, as the holiday gift orders are beginning to pour in one after another. I keep telling myself this is really the first year of my absolute independent for sure business as an artist launch, so working constantly, with no days off, is acceptable, it's what a business owner does. When you really love what you do, it's almost a bit like cheating, sneaking into the studio to work, enjoying packing a painting to ship, tape gun noise and all, even enjoying gesso-ing canvases and cleaning out turpenoid cans - I love every moment of this new life! How lucky I am. I'm not even sure what I could wish for this holiday season, it seems I've been given so much already....What a year this has been. When you wish and when you dream, sometimes the answer is Yes!

Why paint with a palette knife? Reason #4

Guardian Trees
7" x 2"
Palette Knife Painting
Oil on Linen Panel

Why paint with a palette knife?

Reason #4: Artists can grow in their creative efforts by experimenting with different painting tools. Sometimes we just need to challenge ourselves and try a different approach in order to break out of a rut. I felt very clumsy the first time I painted with a palette knife (and sometimes still do), but with practice it gets easier and now it's my preferred tool.

Check back tomorrow for Reason #5...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Why Paint with a Palette Knife? Reason #3

Shelterbelt
2" x 7"
Palette Knife Painting
Oil on Linen Panel

Why paint with a palette knife?

Reason #3: Painting with a palette knife keeps me from getting too bogged down in details. My goal in landscape painting is to convey a sense of the place, rather than create a detailed replica of it. I look for the main idea that makes the scene remarkable.

Check back tomorrow for Reason #4...

Spring Memories
Coronado Rose Arbor by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

.
With temperatures in Dallas below freezing, and my toes feeling just a little numb right now, the time seemed right to break out the rose brush and recreate my trip to San Diego. This painting is based on one of the dozens of rose arbors I love on Coronado Island, just over the bridge, in Southern California. I miss the weather there, but somehow doubt Carlos and I will ever be able to afford to move back. I used to tell my friends that it was "an honor and privilege" to live in California, based on all the hidden costs that kept us living from paycheck to paycheck. But the beautiful landscapes, the amazing weather, and the lifestyle are sure hard to forget, especially right now in the heart of a Texas winter!

Why Paint with a Palette Knife? Reason #2

Lincoln Landing
14" x 11"
Palette Knife Painting
Oil on Panel

Why paint with a palette knife?

Reason #2:  A palette knife is good for covering large areas of a panel quickly. When I paint outdoors, it’s necessary to immediately block in the major shapes, colors and values before the light and weather conditions change.

Check back tomorrow for Reason #3...

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway Painting 2 by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway
Painting Number 2

© G.O.D. Laurie Justus Pace      Graphics One Design 2013

Summer Storm (but it looks like snow to me)
8 x 10 inches Acrylic on Canvas.

The second painting is a horse painting I also did this past summer. Thick paint best describes it along with a cool palette.

The winners will be chosen AFTER two days because the blog comes out on one day but it is emailed the next to my subscribers, so there will always be a delay of one day.

If you live out of the continental USA and you win, you must cover your shipping. Just email me to be enter for the 12 Days of Christmas Give Away. Enter just once for the full contest.

The pumpkin pie is delicious. I bought heavy coconut milk in a can and used it in place of Condensed milk.  Could not tell a difference, but my tummy loves it because I am lactose intolerant and have really missed my pumpkin pie on the holidays. I highly recommend you substituting for your dairy to be healthier.

I chose this verse below because holidays normally bring family together.  Remember we all have feelings and situations that others do not know about. Be kind to everyone and always patient.

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. James 1:19-20
