Reason #5: Palette knife clean-up is easy – just wipe it off with a paper towel. No mineral spirits required.

Reason #4: Artists can grow in their creative efforts by experimenting with different painting tools. Sometimes we just need to challenge ourselves and try a different approach in order to break out of a rut. I felt very clumsy the first time I painted with a palette knife (and sometimes still do), but with practice it gets easier and now it's my preferred tool.

Reason #3: Painting with a palette knife keeps me from getting too bogged down in details. My goal in landscape painting is to convey a sense of the place, rather than create a detailed replica of it. I look for the main idea that makes the scene remarkable.

Reason #2:  A palette knife is good for covering large areas of a panel quickly. When I paint outdoors, it’s necessary to immediately block in the major shapes, colors and values before the light and weather conditions change.

I am excited to begin 2013 as a new member of Palette Knife Painters. My artwork focuses primarily on the prairie landscape, where it seems the wind is always blowing.  I like using the palette knife because it allows me to convey that sense of movement in the painting.
