I have to let you all know how much I appreciate your comments and personal emails from this week. It's a comfort to be reminded that we all face being human, loving deeply and suffering painful losses. Thank you so much - it's good to be back!
Many of you have signed up for my newsletter just in the last few days. I will hopefully be getting started on the second issue next week. I plan to continue recording silent demos for the newsletter that will also be posted on my demo website, . If all goes well, I will make the full versions available for purchase with audio too. There is plenty of actual painting news that I still haven't shared yet - stuff that goes way back to early last summer. It's kind of after the fact now, but still fun to look back on my achievements.
Now - to this painting. I am loving working with cooler greens - hues that don't come naturally to me, but that clearly round out a palette. I mixed my paints with a fair amount of walnut oil early in the block in stage. It's almost like watercolor at that point - without the panic of drying too fast. Once the washy darks were established, I layered in a variety of green hues for the foliage, then took to establishing the large rose as the focal point of the painting. Pinks were added to help move the eye around - then a few careful flicks of the wrist to contrast harder edges with soft ones. This was obviously an offshoot of the painting I posted earlier this week, and a dry run for an event at which I'll be painting tonight. Wish me luck!
