Summer Afternoon in Wallace by Arlon Rosenoff
I paint primarily with a palette knife because it gives me the opportunity to interact with paint in a very tactile, expressionistic way.
Each viewer of my art is able to gain a strong sense my physical interaction with the paint, with every stroke and manipulation visible forever. The surfaces of my paintings are very telling, sometimes resembling a mosaic of palette knife strokes.
Being blessed with an unusual first name allows me to sign my work with my given name.

Sun Drenched IV was inspired by our trip to Provence, France last summer. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers and lavender were in full bloom. While we came across many fields of lavender, we had to search a little harder for sunflowers. Of course that meant sampling more of the local cuisine and wines for much needed fuel as we looked! (My husband likes to say we have to suffer four our art.)
When we eventually came across these sunflowers, I knew immediately they would make a perfect painting. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the sun dappled path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and a beautiful summer day with a few peaceful clouds drifting by made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is so full of color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece immediately lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.
When we eventually came across these sunflowers, I knew immediately they would make a perfect painting. Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.

came across a few more of Potthast's paintings that reeled me in. More
that I had to challenge myself with. Hats seem to be hard for me and
I'm not sure why. They're shapes are so simple. You have to remember to
follow the shape of the head that's underneath - otherwise the hat can
end up looking like a top hat, or a chef's hat - or just plain
buffoonery. I've learned SO much from these little studies that I'm
hoping to carry over into larger paintings of my own subjects. Right
now I'm working on a commission - my first attempt at translating the
tiny to the huge. I really prefer working with wet, juicy paint. Easy
to do when there's not much space to cover. Much harder with a large
piece because of the obvious additional time it takes to develop the
image. I'm going to post it when it's finished and will talk a little

I can't remember a time that I didn't have an artistic pursuit but I found my true love with painting. Although I enjoy exploring with different techniques and materials, I primarily work in oils with an abstract style. Thick paint placed with a palette knife and strong geometric shapes are often found in my paintings.
After earning a degree in Business Admin/Marketing, I went on to several "Big Girl" corporate jobs and then owned and ran a design business in Hawaii, importing antiques from the mainland. My education was rounded out through the UC Berkeley Extension Art Program and the College of Marin Art and Design Program. I am fortunate to have had wonderful instructors as well as the insightful critiques of my fun, fellow painters.

These pink hydrangeas are from my garden. They love my shady yard and fill the front and back with big, pretty blooms from late April until the heat of mid June hits. I gathered a few the other day to bring inside. They look so beautiful in this blue pitcher. I arranged them with some lemons and a teacup from my mom's wedding china to paint. I love how the colors work together in this painting. Now that I've finished, I think I'll have some tea!

I found the reference photo for this gorgeous arrangement on wetcanvas. It cought my eye, because of the warm and classic feel. I decided to use mainly transparent paints for the background to keep the painterly feel of the painting. The opaques came into play in the flowers and pots and greenery.

This painting is about the “process” of painting as much as the subject itself. Many of the strokes seem almost “out of control” yet this is the result of a very deliberate approach. I sometimes like to incorporate this sort of self-conscious brushwork into a painting to call attention to the actual paint and texture on the surface of the canvas.

Back in the fall of 1997, I found myself backpacking alone through Europe and came across an amazing park tucked away in central Paris. It was so full of beautiful colors and French charm, what an incredible experience, I'm so glad I threw caution to the wind and went traveling!

Enjoying the Spring by Pamela Blaies

My spring cleaning frenzy is finally over and I can enjoy the fruits of my labor. I wandered around the garden early this morning, enjoying all the new flowers and blossoming plants. My beloved hydrangea are in full bloom and very pink this year. I clipped a few and put them in this blue pitcher for painting today. I love them so much, I think I'll make another painting tomorrow with these same hydrangea!

Painting around Dallas...at Fair Park
Here is yesterday's painting at Fair Park with the Tutti i Lunedi group. I did not finish, which I really wish I would of pushed myself to do, putting some finishing touches and small amounts of detail. I used one brite brush, and one palette knife for this painting. I doubt that I will work on it in the studio. The grounds at Fair Park are open year round, and it is a great place to paint....especially as long as the State Fair isn't going on. I was pleased with my drawing, and as usual had issues with the greens in the monkey grass and bushes. I had to amp up the colors just because I like color. I really liked the RayMar panel I was painting on....new size for me...12" x 10", which is much better than the 6" x 8" or 8" x 8" panels. I have some new work in the studio...will post those later. I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet's Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a circular pattern to add to that mood. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.
