Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating. Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again. It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

WORKSHOP WITH DREAMA TOLLE PERRY Day 3 - SOLD

On the third day of the workshop we got to paint from our own reference photos. I specifically elected to paint sunflowers in order to gain more confidence with painting various shades of YELLOW... Being primarily an animal painter I don't get to work with large areas of yellow on a regular basis..Have you ever seen a yellow cat? I have not...

This one has a bit of palette knife work in it too...I so do love the knife...for the texture and color application that it affords me...I try an include knife work in all of my paintings...

Goats may look pretty silly, but they must be "smarter than they look"! When I set up to paint the red barn and out-building (aka goat shed), they were all inside their little hut. One brave soul was peeking out. It was very overcast and they were calling for some strong showers that day. The rain held off for a good bit of the morning, and the little goats came out into their long pen. Hmm, I liked that composition better- deciding to wipe out some space to include these short-legged tank-like eating machines. Then it started raining! All the little goats ran back inside - not wanting to get their little "goat-coats" wet! Who would've guessed- they're secretly neat-niks! And it wasn't evening raining hard- just barely a sprinkle! I wasn't going to pack up until I had those goats placed in the painting - no matter how briefly I had to do it! So I worked back into other areas of the painting, the sprinkles stopped momentarily, and I quickly wiped off field greens and painted those goats in there quickly. They weren't going to stand around for long!

At this time of year, Steve and I go out to Lake Mary Road, south of Flagstaff, AZ on Friday evenings for a bike ride and then enjoy the sunset. Sometimes, I choose to paint rather than ride. I did the first version of this painting last fall from the lookout at Mormon Lake, with the view north to the San Francisco Peaks. I just finished this new version this week in my studio.

I'm Kathy Willis, an Arizona native residing in Flagstaff, a late-comer painter, blogger, and trailrunner. I've long been inspired by my southwest homeland, however it was a life-changing journey walking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in Spain in celebration of my fiftieth birthday, that I discovered a desire to express myself through art. I have had the good fortune to observe the green ray on three separate occasions. This is a rare optical phenomenon that occurs at the moment of sunset when a green spot is visible for a second or two at the point of sunset. If you are not familiar with this you may want to search online for more information. It is truly a breath taking experience to witness it.

I started out with the brush and decided half way through that the palette knife would bring the rich colors and texture that is difficult to capture with the brush.

I had a wonderful Mother's Day. I talked to my mom and was pampered by my sweet family. I arranged this bunch of Gerbera daisies on Mother's Day. I just love the gorgeous color. Of course, I can't just sit the flowers on the counter to enjoy - I must paint them first! An old-fashioned Ball jar is the perfect complement and the napkin shows off the subtle blue color of the glass.

Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

Monday was the prettiest day all week, sunshine and brilliance. I went back to Clucas Field to get a different sort of view, since it was so gray when I went there on Saturday to paint. The trees are so wonderful here in a New England spring. When the leaves first start to come in they are a brilliant yellowy-green, sometimes almost a high key burnt orange. My husband and I noticed, that the colors are similar to autumn, but softer, brighter, more airy perhaps? And the limbs- down to each leaf, is so fluffy! When you allow your eyes to rest on a tree line, have you noticed patterns of shapes, and intervals...sort of like musical notes? One or two lone trees making a grand statement, either by their shape or coloring?

I painted this as a demo for a workshop in Arizona. The yellow and warm oranges contrast with the blues and violets in the shadows.
