Modern LDS Art - Salt Lake City Temple

I don't usually start with sketches but in this case I really wanted to the temple and architecture to be identifiable. I had really good direction on this commission from my friend. She knew exactly what she wanted which made my job so much easier. For this painting of the LDS Salt Lake Temple, I printed out the image I was using and separated into 8 equal squares for scaling.

This is another demonstration painting I did for the group of artists in a Plein Air workshop I taught.

Like the painting I posted yesterday, I began this one with a quick pencil study to show the class how I organize the key shapes of the composition. This served as a guide when I began the actual painting.

On April 6th I will begin a new Plein Air workshop and there is still time to register. We will paint at a variety of locations around Orange County, California for 5 consecutive Saturdays from 9am to noon. Email me for details if you’re interested.

Thanks for looking.

Aspen Painting

Summer in Aspen, or any other destination in Colorado, is a beautiful experience!  I have another trip to Crested Butte planned for this summer and I can't wait to photograph  the aspen trees, wildflowers, and spectacular mountain vistas.

My 36"x36" acrylic aspen tree palette knife painting, "Summer Path", hangs in the home of one my special collector's.  Although this painting is sold, it is available in a giclee on canvas or paper.  Please keep in mind that I love to paint commissions and I'd be happy to discuss such a venture with you.

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and spring wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've framed the paintings in 5" gold plein air frames and they look great hung alone or in a grouping!

Red Poppy Offshoot by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Red Poppy Offshoot
by Nancy Medina

Oil on Linen Panel

Poppy Offshoot is the newest small work in the studio. This is my first full week as a full-time artist, sans the day job as a magazine editor. Early retirement from one job so I can dedicate 7 days a week to doing what I love at the easel was a great decision, at least so far! It's strange having time to breathe and think things through instead of racing from one deadline to the next. I even turned on the television in the middle of the day to catch the news. It was liberating!

Palette Knife Painting Tips for Beginners

It always makes me laugh when I hear people say “I could never do that or I wish I could paint like that”. I didn't magically pick up a palette knife one day and just start creating masterpieces - ok, I may never create masterpieces but I work at it.

Remember in the original Karate Kid when Mr. Miyagi teaches the super skinny heart throb Danny Russo (I still don’t understand that one but whatever – swoon away 80’s girls) how to catch a fly with chopsticks?

“You beginner luck”

That is not how painting has ever been for me. I’m not some prodigy… I work my monkey butt off. I try and fail and try again. I study, sketch, research constantly. It’s probably a bit of a sick obsession as I don’t see everyday objects like a chair in my office as just a chair; I see lines, dimension, and color. My eyes study the way a shadow changes when you move the light source around.

I believe if you put your mind to something, you can do it. It may come easier for some that others but we can all develop artistic talents. Here's some things I've picked up along the way.

Palette knife painting tips for beginners:

Pick a photo that you love. Make a photo copy in black and white to clearly identify the lines in the image.
Sketch the image in a light pencil. – This allows you to erase and get a feel for the painting.
Once you’re ready to paint, decide the colors you’d like to use and set your palette up.
   Set up paper towel
   A garbage can
Leave your paints out so you can remember what colors you used.
Additives or mediums aren't necessary but can be fun to play with. I use acrylic based painters caulk to thicken up my oil paint and help it dry faster. Mixed Media Impasto paintings are fun!
Select 5 standard knives.  I sell Starter Kits for $35 if you’re interested shoot me an email.
Begin applying the paint but don’t over analyze too much. This is the fun of knife painting.
Step back several times during the process to see your painting from a distance.
I've learned that taking a picture of your painting during the process also helps you see where things need to be added.
 Paint another one
 Repeat and repeat again

Things to consider:

-Don’t take yourself too seriously.
-Listen to music. It is amazing how different a painting can look depending on the kind of music you listen to; it helps me “get into character”.

Happy Painting.

Spring White Roses by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Spring White Roses
by Nancy Medina

16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Spring White Roses is a new daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, and it’s been a very busy day with my assistants. I found a recipe for woodpecker suet online, and decided the time was right to give it a try. My mother’s house in East Texas attracts several kinds of woodpeckers, even a Pileated that stops by once in a great while, and these colorful birds are one of my favorites to watch from her back porch.Visit my art blog today to read more about my suet-making adventure and see the recipe!

Impressionistic Provence Landscape Knife Painting #4

Impressionistic Provence Landscape Knife Painting #4
Palette Knife oil painting by Marion Hedger
Oil on board, 20x15cm (8"x6")
 THIS PAINTING IS NOW SOLD
The fourth in the set of four small landscapes featuring the scenery of Provence, France and showing the vinyards, fields and distant mountains.

Here is a close-up of the knife work which is a mini abstract in itself.

The little gem is painted from some of my photos taken on a trip to the lavender and sunflower fields last year and is a compilation from serveral photos. I wanted a loose lively feel to these small landscapes to show the brilliant colours before the mid-day sun bleached out all the colours.

Blue Swirl Hydrangeas and Spring Workshops by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Blue Swirl Hydrangeas

12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Blue Swirl Hydrangeas is the newest small work in the studio, as I lay in pots and jars and glassware for a new large container garden painting that will be headed to my solo show in San Diego in April. Two of my workshops filled up this week, I think everyone is getting in the mood for flowers! The hydrangeas I painted this evening are based on the blossoms at the Dallas Arboretum, one of the most inspiring spots in Texas for those who enjoy seeing Mother Nature in her brightest spring attire. I would love to paint with you in 2013, check out all my workshops and nab your seat before it is too late! We paint from fresh flowers together, step by step, and artists who work in acrylics and water based oils are also welcome. Put a little joy in your brush and let's make bright color happen in big, loose, bold strokes this year!

Lavender Haze Provence oil painting by Marion Hedger

Lavender Haze Provence oil painting
18x24 cm (approx 7"x10")
Oil, palette knife painting
Available to purchase by auction on Daily Paintworks

Another Provence landscape painting from photos taken last year. These small landscapes are a joy and a challenge to paint at the same time. Getting the proportions, perspective and sense of distance correct can be difficult, but the idea and colours  make it worthwhile. Using the palette knife gives a nice looseness to the painting and it is impossible to fiddle.

Summer Dreams by Roxanne Steed

8"x10" oil on stretched canvas, gallery wrapped with sides painted (design continued around sides)
Yesterday a couple neighbors and I went up to Boston for the annual Spring Flower & Garden show. It is spectacular- and quite amazing how they bring in all these huge flowering trees and shrubs, granite slabs, stone fountains, etc.  to set up those wonderful exhibits!  We come away feeling like we've been on a great vacation far away.  It is definitely the turning point that makes things feel like Spring is really officially here. I know it's been on my mind non-stop - warm weather, sitting out under the shade trees, with cut peonies from my garden in a big jug on the table.
The garden is beginning to show signs of life! Tulips, daffodils and Spanish Bluebells are poking through the soil, working hard to grow, waiting for those warm days when mankind and plant-kind feel great turning our faces to the sun!

Plein Air Painting in the Spring by Pamela Blaies

6.5" x 5.5"
oil

I enjoy painting in my comfortable studio - music on, no worries of outside elements interfering with my painting process. I've only done plein air (painting outside) a handful of times and that was years ago. I have many friends who prefer painting outdoors and I'm planning to go on a trip with some of them in May, so I recently purchased a travel easel. Yesterday I drove by a yard filled with gorgeous white irises , so I ran home to grab my new plein air stuff to try it out. It was a little awkward getting everything all set up and I was only able to paint for about 30 minutes, but it was fun! Here's the little study I finished. I don't know if I'll ever be a die hard, paint in the freezing snow kind of artist, but it sure is nice painting outside in the spring!

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.
