A study following Lois Griffel's method of painting. I have previously used Susan Sarback's process with pastels of blocking in with warm colours for light and cool colours for the darks, then layering the paint in 4 steps. This is the first palette knife oil painting using Lois's method which is a very similar process and way of thinking. I took her example photo and flipped it and changed some of the marsh detail. I like the sense of distance achieved and the light shining through. I shall try a few more of these but larger I think as working small is quite difficult.

A friend of mine saw me looking at the pumpkins and squash at the local market. The next day she made me a present of a couple of pumpkins.
Unfortunately, we had already eaten one of them before I got around to painting doing the painting, so I used some avocados I had in my fruit bowl as a stand-in. But, as usually happens, when I paint fruit and veg still lifes, part of it disappeared before I finished the paintings. I had to do the final touches from memory.

Rework
A slight rework and finishing touches have been added to this painting. It was one of my 30 paintings in the September challenge. The rework was mainly on the left hand tree which i felt was quite working. I pushed the foliage back by using more of a blue green, and I removed one of the branches which I felt cluttered up the tree structure. I am much happier about this one now. These irises are the first flowers that pop up in my spring garden. They are always a welcome sign that spring is arriving. I think I need to put in some sky (in this case wall) holes to give the irises some breathing space. Normally I would let the painting stand for a couple of days and paint the finishing touches before posting, but the as I am posting them immediately some will need final adjustments. I think the next time I am involved in a challenge I need to go smaller LOL

Iris Dancing Queens is the last of the paintings in the challenge. I started with a floral and finish with a floral. A big drum roll please ........ I painted 30 and posted everyday. It certainly was a worthwhile challenge to participate in, and a big thank you to Lesle Saeta for coming up with the idea and hosting everyone's entries. A welcome bonus of the challenge is that I have also got to see lots of other artwork.

Day 12, 30 days hath September challenge

Tree series ?
I seem to have started a series of tree paintings and I do enjoy painting them, especially when there is light and shadow playing on the trunks and underneath. Sweet Chestnut Walk and Cork Sentinels were from a recent trip into the Var. Sherwood Forest walk and today's painting are from older photographs taken earlier in the year.

The coastal road
These coastal pines were found along the coast road to St Raphael. 
It is a beautiful stretch of coast road that winds from Cannes to St Raphael and we take a trip down it at least once a year. I always take loads of photos so have plenty of references on my 'to do' list. 
Shadows and Light
These gnarled pines attracted my attention because of their shape and the shadows playing underneath them. It's amazing that they grow at all, they were coming out from underneath the tarmac of the road! Just to the left is the sea and I ignored the road for the painting using my artistic license.

 Cork Trees,
The photo for this painting was taken in the same forest as the chestnut trees painted on day 8 (see post here). The forest is in the Var just to the north of St. Tropez. As you cross from the Alpes Maritime into the var, the flora changes and the oak trees change from the Provence green oaks to these cork oaks. They are very distinctive and have a very dark bark. Where the bark have been harvested the red wounds really stand out and they eventually achieve a gnarled look where the new bark grows over the wound. I have lots of photos so expect more paintings of the cork trees.

Difficult Greens
The greens are difficult because although it is coming into autumn there is a lot of fresh green growth that sprout after the first rain at the end of summer, as well as the older green leaves. I've also used a few blue greens to add to the sense of distance.

Sky colours
Although the sky is not a huge part of the painting I took trouble with this using more colours than I normally do (pinks, blues and greens) trying to represent the transitional feel of the sky which was overcast one minute and sunny the next.

Last Friday we took a drive around the vineyards in the Var region so I could gather some photos of the vineyards before the grapes were harvested. As part of the drive we went through the Les Maures hills national forest. Sweet chestnut trees grow wild amongst the cork oaks.
Capturing the light
Generally the day was overcast but every now and then the sun shone through and I managed to capture the sunlight in this view. This is not quite finished, I still have to work on the edges of the shadows.

Last year we took a trip around the Arles area and on the way home stopped off at the Carmague a wetland area to the west of Marseilles.
We saw lots of flamingoes, egrets, black bulls and the obligatory white horses.
This is the first of my Camargue paintings and I plan to do several more. It's quite an interesting mix of the flat pools of marshy waters with the choppy waters of the Med as a backdrop.

Another painting of my container plants. This one has some lovely coral-coloured pelargoniums (trailing geraniums). I wondered how I was going to translate that wonderful colour in paint. After deliberating which red to use, it turned out to be quite simple. With my last order of paints I purchased some Scarlet Lake, a colour I had never used before. I love summer and the vivid colours of the flowers. Living in the south of France, some of the garden flowers go into a rest period and loose some of their colour. To counteract this, I always plant loads of containers. This adds lots of colours to areas of the garden.

I posted this painting yesterday and would like to share my work in progress pictures.

I started by blocking in the local colours using a brush, I then progressively added more definition and texture using a brush and knife as the fancy took me. The third step was more of the same but using the knife more and thicker paint. The last stage, as usual, was refining and I also opened up some of the flowers and foliage at the top of the design to get some breathing space into the painting. The final touches were the thicker highlights.

Several years ago I planted several containers with lily bulbs. Once they stop flowing they are put into a corner of the garden and forgotten about. But each year they perform wonderfully. Their only care is watering and a bit of feed. These are lilies from one of those containers. Painted alla prima, in situ. It's lovely painting outside, but the sun does have a habit of moving around making it difficult to catch the light. You have to make up your mind early on where the lights and darks are to be placed.

Mini Impressionist landscape studies collage

Mini Provence Landscapes Collage

Here are all three together and with better photographs. The left two were painted with a palette knife and the right hand side one with a brush. On the right hand one I used a multi coloured background (warm colours for the lights and cool colours for the shadows), the other two were painted on a pink ground. I like all three, but the left hand one speaks to me more. I do see a lot of potential for the left hand style.

Every year the poppies self-seed all over my garden, particularly in the lawn. My husband, bless him, mows around these patches giving me a lovely display with high impact colour! These are growing around an old hibiscus syringa which is just starting to emerge after its' winter rest.

Here is the final version of the painting I posted a couple of days ago HERE. It didn't need much to finish it off. I like the way the foreground turned out, nice and suggestive.
Here is a close-up of the foreground where you can see some of the drips left in-situ. It's definitely something I will try again.

I used a slightly different technique for this mini landscape. I washed some very thin oil over the panel to use as my ground. I let the wash run and mingle to see what effect I would get. This was the result:

I quite liked the drips on the dried under wash and wanted to see how I could use them in a finished painting. Using a palette knife I started to lay in the paint for the top two thirds of the painting. Apart from adding touches of the colours I used in the rest of the painting, I left the background of the bottom third untouched to take advantage of those drips. I quite like the effect on the finished piece and it doesn't feel quite as 'heavy' as some of my paintings. Let me know what you think?
I can see the painting needs some touch ups, so I will post a new photo of the final piece in a few days.

One of the pears from yesterday's still life was eaten for breakfast, so I made up the trio of fruits with an apple. It had similar colouring to the pears and was a good substitute. It can't understand why it is different though, and can't join in with the pears LOL.
