It's tempting, when painting a tree at the height of summer, to think all of the foliage must be depicted in some shade of green. But when I work in plein air, I look for some of the less obvious hues within those branches to establish the light and dark areas.
Except for the signature, this piece was done entirely with a palette knife. My recent body of work examines relationships within the prairie landscape. Using a palette knife allows me to stay focused on the larger shapes and colors in a scene and to avoid overdoing detail.
