Tumbling 1 Original Oil Painting by Karen Balon

Tumbling 1 from the Tumbling Series of 4
Each piece is 12"x12" Oil on Canvas
For a closer view or to Purchase Click Here

Technically, Tumbling 1 is actually the last of the 4 that I painted.  If you compare the bodies of the 4 this one has a less "speckled" effect.  I am not sure why?  But somewhere deep inside the muse just guides me intuitively and that's the way it appears on the canvas.  I can never paint something the same way twice which is fine as each "jellyfish" is different and has it's own unique personality.
Yes, I do refer to them as jellyfish though they started out as a vision in my head and have morphed over time.  I actually see them to reside both in the Ocean and Deep Space.  Though you are welcome to see them as something else and somewhere else.

You may ask, why did I name this one number 1?  To me, it just feels like it's the One that is starting the tumbling and goes head over heels from there.  What do you think?

I love it when you Share my work and posts :-)

Painting in Montepulciano with Niki Gulley

12x9 textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 2, Montepulciano - Tuscany Art Trek

With a little more time before our afternoon winery tour, we decided to work on another painting. I chose this view of the tile rooftops below spreading out in front of the valley. I loved the puzzle piece feel of the buildings, zigzagging in all different directions, clinging to the steep drop below with the fields of crops also adding their criss crossing patterns to the jigsaw puzzle.

This painting is of an olive grove in the Alpilles, a region which stretches from Avignon in northern Provence to the Camargue in the south. The countryside has great natural beauty, with the vegetation including scrubby bushes, pine forests, oaks and vineyards as well as olive trees. Here and there alleys of cypresses lead up to restored bastides or dry stone farms, as in the painting.

Original oil painting Winter Snow by Karen Tarlton

SOLD

First Snow of Winter
Oil
Inspiration:
As I sit here in South Bay in my shorts and flip flops, I think about the beautiful blizzards of winter.
I grew up near Lake Tahoe in Northern California where winter was a magical time!
We used to hike up Mt. Rose in the snow with the dogs, and I think it was on this quiet mountain,
in the pristine powder, that I learned to love the colors of winter and the beauty of the snow.

Shipping paintings to some new collectors, delivering a few paintings to upcoming exhibits and framing tons on brand new artwork for the upcoming Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson, Texas next weekend. Frenzied, but fun!

Plein Air Painting in Tuscany with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

9x12 textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 1, afternoon location - Tuscany Art Trek

That afternoon it started to drizzle, so we picked a location that was covered where we could still paint and photograph. With the sky fairly overcast and the hues rather dull that afternoon, we used the cypress as our subject, but had fun playing with color. I think the results were even better than had it been a sunny day! Everyone's paintings turned out beautiful, and that evening we treated ourselves to a fabulous tuscan dinner of pastas, pecorinos, meats and a little vino to treat ourselves. A great end to a fun filled day!

One of our photographers getting into the shot!

An amazing dinner with new friends.

In late October and November Provence is a blaze of colour, with the orchards and vineyards turning from green to red and yellow. The tree in this painting stood at the edge of  a roadside (or 'chemin') next to a vineyard. The leaves on the tree have completely turned to burnished gold, although the vines are just beginning to change colour. The reddish earth is extremely dry after the drought of summer.

My New Studio is Just Peachy! by Pamela Blaies

11" x 14"

Now that I get to work in such a great space all to myself, I feel spoiled! Below is a photo of my new studio as I set up for this painting. I found the cute little creamer at the antique mall. The turquoise adds a nice complement to the warm "peachy" colors.

Painting this was truly fun. The fresh air, the warmth of the sun, the sounds of the waves crashing against the beach. It’s a wonderful feeling to paint on location, and I think that comes through in the painting itself. This is “Keyhole Rock,” a landmark in Laguna Beach California. I once taught a Plein Air Workshop here, as I shared all my inside tips and techniques with other artists.

My new Plein Air Workshop begins in a couple of weeks on October 6. We’ll meet for 5 Saturday mornings from 9am to noon and paint on locations around Orange County. The classes are for all skill levels and I give loads of personal assistance.

If you would like to join the group I’ll email you details.

Tuscany Plein-Air Painting / Photo Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

9x12 textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

Day 1 - Tuscany Art Trek

We had so much fun painting at the villa in the morning, that we decided to paint another farmhouse in a different direction next. With so much to choose from, it was had to pick just one subject! This time, we all decided to work with palette knife and thick juicy oil paint, enjoying creating texture and the exciting color combinations that occur while working wet in wet with the paint. As a treat when we were finished, we met up with the others in the group for a delicious lunch of local proscuittos, pecorino cheeses, fruits and vegees, and of course, a little vino for afternoon fuel!

Two of our painters, Sheri Jones (above) and Pat (below) also working with palette knife in Tuscany.

Daily Painting 1448 Scheffleras in Bloom

These huge scheffleras are growing in the back yard, they are also know as umbrella plants. The scheffleras have grown so large they are taller  than some of the palm trees.  They are around 30 or 40 feet tall.
They are usually seen as a tiny plant in a dish garden. I painted this from life awhile ago, 2003 I think.  There were some things I didn't care for in the painting so I tweaked it a bit and here it is again.  Its 11 x 14 inches, $300.

I delivered this painting today for a charity art auction hosted by The Arts League.  Their annual Shining Stars Luncheon will be held on October 19th in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. This charity benefit raises funds to support the programs and scholarships of the Arts Council Northeast. All of the artwork will be shown in an exhibit in Northeast Mall in Hurst, Texas in October.  I'm happy to be a part of this event to help to raise funds for the arts.

Dotted all around Bonnieux in Provence are mas (farmhouses) of pale yellow stone surrounded by orchards or fields of lavender. In July the countryside is a haze of purple flowers humming with the sound of bees and crickets. The painting is of one such mas with lavender in the foreground and the chalky white summit of Mont Ventoux in the distance.

I was tickled pink today to receive the Dallas Arboretum Adult Education catalog and see my Blue Glass Asters Sunflower painting featured. I'll be teaching two fall workshops at the Arboretum in the next few months, and I sure hope you can join me. The Arboretum is a perfect venue for flower painting, not only because of the amazing gardens and waterfalls and paths and trees, but because the staff there is superb.

Daily Painting 1446 Water Lily Extravaganza

This painting is from the pond in the middle of White City park off Midway road.  It was a  plein air I did a number of years ago, there were a few things I didn't care for so I changed things around a bit. The painting is 11 x 14, oil on masonite.

Does anyone know what kind of palms those are?  They grow like I have them, all from a center root clump, with orange flowers.  $300.

"Colorful Transformation" ©2012 Niki Gulley
36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

With "Colorful Transformation," I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature.
