Today's painting is of one of the vineyards we visited on our drive around the Var the other day, the same drive that produced Sweet Chestnut Walk and Cork Sentinels. You can see the Maures in the background. The vines were full of nice juicy grapes. Some of the leaves were turning, so maybe it is close to harvest time. These vineyards produce the delicious Provence Rosé the area is famous for. I painted these vineyards in the autumn last year after the harvest

Evening Shadows over the Vineyard oil painting by Marion Hedger

Evening Shadows over the Vineyard Provence, palette knife painting
Oil on 3mm thick MDF canvas panel
Size = 18 x 24 cm (approx 7"x10")

A landscape featuring the vineyards of Provence, France and showing the spring colours of the vines and the distant mountains. The late afternoon sun throws strong shadows over the vines.
The thickly applied strokes add texture and movement to the oil painting, a modern use of impressionism. The texture and strokes can be seen in the close-up photos. It is painted loosely to give a lively feel and movement to the painting.

Can be framed but also looks good displayed on a mini easel

The vines in autumn in Provence set the countryside ablaze with their spectacular colours . The farm in this painting is in Les Alpilles, near St. Remy de Provence, an attractive small town where Vicent Van Gogh lived for a time and painted many of his best known works.

Autumn Tree by Jeannette Johnston

Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
24" x 22" / 12F
€150
Available to purchase online at

In late October and November Provence is a blaze of colour, with the orchards and vineyards turning from green to red and yellow. The tree in this painting stood at the edge of  a roadside (or 'chemin') next to a vineyard. The leaves on the tree have completely turned to burnished gold, although the vines are just beginning to change colour. The reddish earth is extremely dry after the drought of summer.
