Lemon Still Life by NY artist, Celeste Plowden
I learned the art of acrylic and pastel painting through private instruction, after having spent my career as a designer of printed fabrics in the New York market place. I am a graduate of the College of Design, Art and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, with a major in the History of Art, 1977. Later, I studied printed textile design at Parsons School of Design, in New York. Immediately afterward, I began free lance work for several design studios in the garment district of NYC, where I did re-coloration work for printed apparel fabrics, and sold my own designs through Bread and Butter Designs, also located in New York. In addition, during the 1980's and 1990's, I designed a number of needlecraft and stencil books for Dover Publications. Currently, I am working on a series of exotic birds and other animals done in acrylic paint, with a palette knife, for texture and brilliant color. I consider my paintings to be representational or impressionistic in nature, and I use fantasy colors because what I see often makes me feel these colors, and what would make an interesting composition, rather than using realistic colors.

Tango Tangerines by Marion Hedger oil painting
Tango Tangerines by Marion Hedger
Still Life painting
Oil on MDF panel
Available on DailyPaintworks
Another clementine painting, this time with a dark red/brown background. To keep the background translucent I mixed the paint with liquin. This was very effective and I think I will use this again. I also manage to keep the background from getting too heavy which is sometimes a problem for me. Different styles call for different approaches. When using my palette knife I generally like a highly textured thick background but I thought that would be too much for this painting.

97, 98, 99......by Pamela Blaies
Citrus and a Mason Jar
9 1/4" x 7 5/8"
oil on panel
I am excited to announce that my Petite Painting Project - 100 Paintings in 100 Days is almost complete. In celebration of posting the 99th Petite Painting, I am putting "Citrus and a Mason Jar" up for auction today with a petite starting bid of just $99. This painting is all about reflections and light. Citrus colors add warmth to the cool composition.
I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

Giving Back by Pamela Blaies
14" x 11"
Oil on Canvas
DONATED
This will be my first time to exhibit in the 2012 Bayou City Memorial Park Art Festival and I'm looking forward to it. I've heard so many wonderful things about the organization and the art community in the Houston area. They host a fundraising event called Sunday in the Art, where they offer artworks only from the selected artists exhibiting in the festival. I created this piece especially to donate to this affair - it feels good to give back a little and help to support the arts.
