My iris garden is blooming and it's almost the end of December. Each morning I awaken, expecting the cold to stop this unexpected spell of blossoms, and more and more flowers are opening. I've decided to see this bounty as a gift from my newest guardian angel, my Mother. Thanks Mom, for the beauty!

Monet's Iris Garden
We visited Monet's house and gardens in Giverny, France, May 2012. Everything was blooming. There were thousands of irises. This is a snapshot of his pink house, green shutters and his irises.

Heaven is filled with the gorgeous sound of my Mother's laugh today. She passed away on Thursday evening. Just as many had predicted, the world tilted under my feet, and life is not the same. I've learned a lot since Thursday. I've learned that amazing friends will carry you on their shoulders when your heart is sad. I've learned that sisters are some of life's most precious gifts. I am quite certain my Mother is writing poetry again. I woke up this morning with a funny little song in my head that had the words "I'm so proud of you, Nanny..." in it, and though I can't remember the rest, it felt like a message from a guardian angel with a sense of humor.
I taught a class at the Dallas Arboretum Saturday. At lunch break, as I sat in the quiet classroom by myself gazing across the easels at my student's work, and seeing the sunlight streaming in from the skylights, I realized my Mom had just watched me teach for the first time.
I do believe there is a beautiful next chapter after this life. I do believe there are more poems to come. For now, I will keep moving forward with her spirit beside me and the memory of her laugh in my heart. I will love you forever, my beautiful Mom.

This morning my iris garden was struggling to regain its footing after
the cool rains yesterday. A flock of yellow blossoms had fallen to the
earth, so I took up my garden scissors and brought them indoors for a
modeling session. My four pug helpers accompanied me on this rhizome
reconnaissance mission into the gardens.
I hope you've had some productive moments in your
spring garden, with helpers nearby to keep you smiling - tomorrow
morning I'm off to teach in New Orleans, one of my favorite places in
the whole world - and I'm not just saying that because of the beignets,
cher!

Signs of Spring celebrates the first blooms in my garden, my purple and blue iris. Thanks to the wet winter, the flowers are promising to perform extraordinary feats of color in my iris and hydrangea beds over the next few weeks. First thing this morning after checking in at the studio/office with the bosses/pugs, I set out in my business casual bathrobe to the back yard post haste with a pair of scissors. My mission, not to frighten the neighbors (although this is sometimes the result of these types of excursions), but to rescue my purple irises from the impending ice storm. Apologizing profusely as I snipped their bright stems as low to the ground as I dared without damaging the mama plants, I hastily rushed these four beauties indoors to fresh water resuscitation in a glass vase. Tonight they held up quite well under my hot studio lights, just long enough to inspire a bit of color, flare, and fun purple splash onto a nearby canvas. Stay tuned, tomorrow we could be in for more violet, if these ladies do not vanish overnight.

On new year's day I had one beautiful, frozen white iris in my garden. Sadly, I did not see it until it was almost wilted. Today I was so excited to see a plethora of purple in my iris beds, these lovely bloomers decided to thumb their little iris noses at winter! I do hope it will be a good spring for my garden this year, and they don't all bloom too early. Sending happy thoughts for healthy rhizomes, and especially hoping the black iris blooms in April again!

I could not resist the urge to go super thick with color on Beyond the Storm Iris Garden. This painting is dedicated to those who are facing adversity, a loved one in hospital, a fear that a job will not be there tomorrow, a scary medical diagnosis. Three people I care about very deeply are facing each of these scenarios. As a friend, all we can do is be there for those we love, in these tough situations. And so I am there. With love and support to my dear friends. Someday, there will be a time when the storm is behind you. And I'll still be there beside you.

Escapism. Defying time. Serenity and solace. Reliving treasured moments...the reasons I paint and make artwork. The creative acts are surely the most pleasant and yet difficult of all. Color and form are special friends. The challenge of perfecting artwork is monumental and exhilarating. This effort has grown to be both friend and family, which are the two most important aspects of my life. Judaica is my most challenging art...Hebrew and I don't always get along!
I'm mainly self-taught in art, relying on intuition, experimentation, benefiting from studying books, visiting museums, galleries and learning painting techniques from other artist friends/relatives. I've studied pastels with Clive Tyler, taken oils with Daniel Edmondson. My newest medium is painting on glass, inspired by an Italian master, bringing this art technique home and applying my own topics. My oils are mainly with palette knife.
This art style might be called "abstract realism", an oxymoron in its own right. Favorite contemporary artists include Cruciani, L Horowitz, Berberian, S Stork, C Tyler, D Edmondson.

Out of the Blue Delphiniums and Iris is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and the last hurrah of the batch of fresh Japanese iris and blue delphiniums. The little petals were making plopping noises the whole time I was painting them under the studio light, as they fell to the tabletop. They posed bravely and stood steadfastly under duress, and deserve to be remembered for all they gave in the name of color! We salute you little flowers. Oh my, it must be getting late, where did that come from?
It's likely because I am still so absolutely delighted we had a very special visitor to Flower Mound Studio today! Read more....

Violet Ballet is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I just got a big shipment of deep gallery wrap canvases, and had been wanting to try something in the 16X16 size for quite some time. I love the size, it's just right for big, bold color! It's hard to get a good photograph of a palette knife painting, the paint is so thick and textured. On the surface, it looks like icing on a cake, if one were to eat a purple and blue cake, that is...
One of the things I focused on in this composition was to place a strong horizontal element (the deep dark blue purple) in order to counter all of the vertical elements (the dancing irises and delphiniums). The horizontal strip of dark purple also helps to push the little grouping of white irises and green stems forward, adding depth and a bit more drama to the painting.

Berries and Creme Lily Trio was my sixth class demo in Rockwall, Texas, and I am always so sad to say farewell to a class of enthusiastic, talented painters, most especially when they bring me pastries! Thanks so much Rosemary, my enabler, donut supplier, and new BFF for bringing two dozen delicieux donuts this morning. What in the world could be more fun than painting fresh flowers in the colors we love, while having just a few glazed treats while we're at it?
My next stop is Kansas City, and Connie Turner's fabulous art studio in Lees Summit. I have one seat that just opened for this workshop, and would love to see you there! With or without donuts! Read more....

Spring, I
love this time of year. After the tulips die down, the irises are the
next to appear. As well as the dark blue border irises, these pale
purple irises are amongst the first of the irises to appear. They are tall, and
although not as showy as the bearded irises, they give a beautiful
purple haze under the citrus trees.About this painting
I painted this in a loose impasto style, dancing around the canvas with my palette knife, aiming more for the purple glow than true representation of the irises.

Iris and Ranunculus is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I have so much news to report I'm not quite sure where to begin, so I'll start with the most exciting of all - you are invited to join me for my first official painting workshop in France! I'll be posting registration information in the next few days on my Web site workshop page, so don your beret, slice up some fromage, and get your workshop scheduler handy because spots in class will be first come, first serve, for a small group with plenty of one on one time. We will be staying at the absolute best place to paint in France, we will be eating yummy French food made by a chef, and we will be pampered and adored and treated to an all inclusive dream come true retreat.
As I type up this report to you, the hubby is in the living room with his new Rosetta Stone app, practicing important French words such as "more croissant please," "may I have more cheese on that?" and "where is the bathroom pronto?" Carlos will be traveling with me, he is so very good at carrying heavy things so he is quite indispensable. I told him if he truly loves me, he will also take a pastry making class while we are there. Stay tuned here to my art bloggy for the first class announcement, I can hardly wait to paint flowers and images from the French countryside with you in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I'm supposed to be packing, I'm supposed to be resting for my big trip to my painting and art marketing workshop in the Texas Hill Country tomorrow, but I confess I'm having trouble tearing myself away from the easel. All these irises are calling my name! Yellows, blues, purples. Thank goodness for caffeine, that will be my friend when I'm driving to Fredericksburg.... Signs of Spring is the newest iris painting among a collection of these growing in Flower Mound Studio this week, thanks to the explosion of color in my iris beds! I cut a few blues and brought them into the studio, placing them in a teal vase to inspire Signs of Spring. Little did I know, there was a hidden camera in the studio, which captured the truth about what goes on behind the brush. I hope this film doesn't go viral, it could spell absolute disaster for my reputation as an artist! Visit my art blog to see the video in question....

My iris garden produced yellow, white, purple and pale blue flowers this morning. This sudden proliferation of profuse color has me just a bit worried that it will be a short bloom season. Rather than see this as the glass half empty garden, I'm going to believe this will be the best iris season ever in the gardens of Flower Mound Studio!
Blue Iris Lily Garden is based on those blooms, and one of over 100 new paintings I'll have on display at Dallas Arboretum Artscape April 26-27. I can't believe it's almost here, holy cow I have to make some tags and labels and decide what color apron to wear that day. So much to do, so many flowers to paint, so little time! Here's a bit more on Artscape, I sure hope to see you there!
