Fruit Still Life, Kitchen Decor, "Breakfast Berries" by Carol Schiff, 8x8" Oil

I love bacon and eggs, but some days, I crave a big bowl of berries.  That is what I was thinking about when I painted this fruit still life.

Purchase here
125 + shipping
We are so fortunate to have wonderful fresh produce available year round in our markets.  I know local is better, but given the choice of blueberries  one month of the year, or all year, I know what I will choose.

In this set up, I piled them high in my favorite pottery berry bowl.  I took it all to my Monday morning painting group and set it under the spotlight.  We all painted the same set up and it is always fun to view the setting from another view and to see how others paint it.  On some days simple is better!

Still Life Teapot, Daily Painting, "Antique French Teapot" by Carol Schiff, 16x16x1.5" Oil

This is not a new painting, but it is my favorite still life teapot painting.  It is a antique French teapot that I found on Etsy.

Purchase here
450 + shipping

The  owner of the Etsy site, Dandeliondecor gave me permission to use her image.  The teapot is no longer available but I am happy to have this painting.

I was attracted by the wavy lines, the beautiful china roses and the sweet curvy handle.  The painting is soft and subtle, but it catches my eye every day as I walk by it.  Yes, one of the perks of being an artist, is lots or original art on your walls.
Several years ago I did lots of still life teapots and flowers and food items.  I am getting in the mood to return to these subjects.

I hope you enjoy this daily painting today and I hope you will pin it.

Still Life Daily Painting, Wine Bottles

One of my favorite times of the day is late evening when I can grab that book or turn on the television to my favorite show and relax with a nice glass of wine.

Purchase here

I set some bottles up in the window sill to get the back lighting, and also got a nice reflection under one of the bottles.  When I started digging through my canvases, I found a 6x12" which was perfect for the composition.

Pear Still Life, "Pears with Back Lighting" 6x8" Oil, SOLD

It has been cloudy and kind of dreary here for the past week or two.  I prefer to work from images and I count on this time of the year to give me the natural light I use.

SOLD

This is not the bright light I usually have streaming in this window.  These pears look a little on the moody side.

I have another version of these pears coming up soon.

I find one of most biggest difficulties in painting small is constantly trying to find new and interesting compositions.  Changing from bright to soft light has helped.  How do you daily painters handle this issue?

Coaxing inspiration

 Plumb Tuckered Out
5" x 7" oil on panel
Available from Etsy - $50 plus shipping

Inspiration is one of those strange things.  There is nothing constant about, no predictability, no reliability either.  It can be as elusive as a needle in a haystack or it floods your head with so many ideas you don't know where to start.

What is inspiration exactly?  The Oxford dictionary definition is:
"The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative."
When inspiration evades us, it can be coaxed out of hiding by ignoring it completely and just carrying on in any creative vein.  Like a toddler having a tantrum, if ignored, it stops crying and thrashing around and becomes curious about what you're doing.  Curiosity is replaced by the "I want to do that too." phase and before you know it, inspiration takes over your hand and head and is slapping paint on the canvas like never before.

Each time I finish a painting, inspiration drains a little and that's where I pull out the small canvasses like this one and just play.  I can see inspiration poking her head around the corner, sniffling a little but curious too...

Autum Pear

Autumn Pear   - SOLD
5" x 7"  oil on panel

Silence doesn't mean I'm not painting.  It means its head down mode and full steam ahead.  I'm trying to make up time in the boat series after deciding that one piece just wasn't working for me, and there was no choice but to restart it.

I think we all know when we don't put our best out there.  Sometimes its easy to let something go just because its the path of least resistance, even if we know something is not right with the painting.  Yes, I could have added the piece but, to me, it would have stuck out like a sore thumb in exhibition and niggled at me constantly.

So now its being redone and coming along nicely.  I've also got #9 on the easel and am pretty much on track again for time - or I hope so.

Of course with the end of one painting, the inevitable "end of palette" small painting was in order.  An autumn pear.  Pears are likely the most over painted subject in the world, some good, some bad and some very bad.  To give them their dues, the shape is simple and value can be complex depending on the lighting.  Its the perfect beginner's fruit to test painting skills with in all mediums.

When I finish all the boats in the series, it might be fun to see if people can match the end of palette painting with the actually painting, based on colours used.

You can find more of my work on my website Jeanette Jobson Fine Art, on my blog, Illustrated Life, and on Facebook and Twitter.  Stop by and say hi, I'd love to hear from you!

This week, my painting on sale is a nice little still life.  Various fruits in the foreground, against a background of palm shadows.  I like to think the earth tilts once a year, just for me, so that the setting sun shines in my window, just so, spraying my wall with gorgeous palm shadows.

Tango Tangerines by Marion Hedger oil painting

Tango Tangerines by Marion Hedger
Still Life painting
Oil on MDF panel

Another clementine painting, this time with a dark red/brown background. To keep the background translucent I mixed the paint with liquin. This was very effective and I think I will use this again. I also manage to keep the background from getting too heavy which is sometimes a problem for me. Different styles call for different approaches. When using my palette knife I generally like a highly textured thick background but I thought that would be too much for this painting.

L'ail rose - pink garlic still life by Marion Hedger - Day 15, 30 day challenge

L'ail rose - pink garlic still life by Marion Hedger
Palette knife painting
This is painting No.15 in the 30 day challenge
Oil on box canvas, sides are painted black
15x20x1.5cm (6"x8")
For auction on Daily Paintworks

Take a look at Marion's art website

This was painted in response to the Daily Paintworks challenge a couple of weeks ago which was a "Root and Bulb challenge". OK, its a week or two late for the challenge but I have been meaning to paint this since then!

This type of garlic is a speciality of the region, this excert is from "Chocolate and Zuchinni" blog -
"Pink garlic?", you ask, your right eyebrow arched in curiosity. Well yes, it is a unique variety of garlic, grown exclusively in and around the medieval town of Lautrec, in the South of France. It is protected by an IGP (Protected Geographical Indication, a European certification of origin), benefits from a Label Rouge quality certification and, most importantly, it has been awarded the honorific title of Prince des Condiments.

Pumpkin and avocadoes still life by Marion Hedger

Pumpkin and Avocados still life
Oil on canvas panel, 24x18cm (approx 7x10inch)
Palette knife painting
80€ International shipping included

A friend of mine saw me looking at the pumpkins and squash at the local market. The next day she made me a present of a couple of pumpkins.
Unfortunately, we had already eaten one of them before I got around to painting doing the painting, so I used some avocados I had in my fruit bowl as a stand-in. But, as usually happens, when I paint fruit and veg still lifes, part of it disappeared before I finished the paintings. I had to do the final touches from memory.

Some close up crops of the knife work
