I love the randomness of plants and flowers, the way the leaves and stems intersect into negative shapes of light and dark and create patterns that are always elegant, always symmetrical. Mother Nature is the most gifted artist, and she invites us to emulate her comfort with earth and dirt colors, with broken leaves and faded petals. Visit my art blog today to see this painting created step by step!

New Sunflower Painting and Upcoming Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley

"Sharing the Sun" ©2013 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" • textured oil on canvas

Inspired by our trip to Provence last summer, I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. In person "Sharing the Sun" practically leaps off the canvas with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

Next summer we will be leading an Art Trek to Paris June 19-27 and Provence, France June 26-July 4, so if you've always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing during lavender and sunflower season in France, and following in the footsteps of Monet, Van Gogh and Cezanne, please join us for this amazing trip! The early registration deadline of Sept. 28th for a $600 savings is quickly approaching. For more details, visit nikigulley.com/artreks.

To purchase "Sharing the Sun," please contact the Good Art Company Gallery at goodartcompany.com/gac/.

Beginnings of a Pulled Painted Ponies... Contemporary Horse paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

A pulled Painted Pony in Progress... Night Runner
12 x 18 inches Oil on Canvas.

Well, I was going to pull straight through, but Terry walked in and was ready to leave for a Whole Foods run. I do not like to miss those at all.
I was into a lavender and prussian blue mood as I began to pull this small version of the Painted Ponies. These horses are tied to my heart and have been since 2006. See the finished painting tomorrow.

Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.  May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope, Lord, is in you. Psalm 25:20-21

"I am a Patriot" Original Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

This is the first painting from many photos that I took while in Washington DC this summer. The flag was located between the Lincoln and Vietnam Veterans Memorials and has the smaller POW flag below. I've always wanted to do a painting of our flag, and this felt like the perfect one to try. Doesn't it look strong and proud?

It was so great finally seeing all of the important structures and memorials in DC after having taught about them for so many years. Looking forward to taking our boys when they get a bit older. Of course one of my favorite parts was the afternoon I spent at The National Gallery of Art browsing around and absorbing as much history as I could there as well.

I am honored to have been invited to serve as a demonstration artist for the September 19, 2013, meeting of a very talented group of artists, the Highland Arts Guild of Marble Falls, Texas. I hope you will join us for a fun morning of painting and talking about art and become a Highland Arts Guild member while you're at it! Read more...

I've shared more photos on my art blog from my recent girl's painting week in the mountains near Oakley, Utah. My friend Elizabeth Robbins (world famous rose painter) was our gracious hostess, and made sure we had plenty of hiking opportunities to help burn off the donuts, chip and dip, homemade spaghetti, and snacks that make a retreat complete.

In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. I trust in you;

30 day daily painting challenge event

30 Days hath September Challenge
18x24cm oil on canvas panel

I am taking part in Leslie Seata's blog challenge to paint a daily painting each day in September. I am already running behind and I haven't organised my self at all. I had family over all summer long and the last ones left yesterday.
I painted this quite quickly this morning to get me into the swing of things. I may do some more on this one later, but I am liking the effect.

I am not sure if I will do a theme or just go with the flow each day. I still have to catalogue my 101 garden series, and I am not even sure of how many I painted, but I do know that I improved as time went on and lost my fear of 'just going for it'.
It was fun to do, although frustrating at times.
Here are a couple of my garden 101 paintings

Beginnings of Making Headway Contemporary Horse Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

© G.O.D. Laurie Justus Pace      Graphics One Design 2013

Very Beginnings Making Headway
16 x 20 inches Oil on Canvas. Available

I am always sketching and referring back to sketches that really pull to me when I am working.   I did not know which sketch I would use at this point as I began to put colors in the background. Note I am working horizontally as I block in color.  I have to trust in the spirit of the paint as it builds. It ended up going vertical.  This is a 16 x 20 painting, small for me but more affordable to collect.

Truly we have no control in our lives either.  We think things are 'horizontal'...but they turn out 'vertical'.  Only God knows and until you trust in Him, you life cannot be filled with His grace or His peace.

Great peace have those who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble. Psalm 119:65

Labor Day Break? by Pamela Blaies

Texas Lilacs and Lemon Slices
24" x 18"
oil on linen

I am enjoying spending time with my family this weekend. Mostly fun time, but today we are working on cleaning out the garage together. WAIT! Isn't Labor Day supposed to be a day to take a break from labor? Oh well, it's fun doing it together! Speaking of satisfying labor, this painting is one I finished last week. My focus on creating a more loose feel in my work is really inspiring me. It requires a careful consideration of edges and thoughtful placement of brushstrokes.

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

Plein Air Painting in Tuscany with Niki Gulley

"Breaking Through," Tuscany ©2013 Niki Gulley
24" x 12" • Textured Mixed Media on canvas

This painting was inspired by one of our plein air painting workshops in Tuscany. I've always been attracted to this lone clump of cypress trees, and on this day the clouds in the sky parted just enough to allow the sun's rays to pass through and illuminate the cypress grove below. I decided to have fun with the colors to add to the excitement and drama of the moment.

"Breaking Through" and several of Niki's contemporary impressionistic landscapes are on display at the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX. For more information, please contact goodartcompany.com/gac/.

"Elephant Surfer" Original Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

I have been busy doing a few commissioned pieces this past month. This piece is the third painting of elephants for this collector. The first two were a front and rear view in bright greens, blues, and yellows. For the last piece he wanted an image showing his son surfing an elephant. You know I am always thrilled to do elephant paintings and really appreciated the cool idea!

Looking forward to seeing the three pieces together in a custom frame the owner will make himself.

Pink Hollyhocks and Moose Sightings by Floral Artist Nancy Medina

Pink Hollyhock Duo by Nancy Medina
8X10
Oil on Archival Panel

Pink Hollyhocks was inspired by a Utah garden last week during a plein air painting trip to the mountains with girlfriends. What a fabulous week we had hiking along rivers and painting amidst the aspens. I didn't spot any bears this year, but we did see a moose and her baby one morning. She returned later the same evening much closer to our cabin, and I got a video of her I'll share in my next art newsletter! I'm told a mama moose can be very aggressive, so I was the first one back to the cabin when she made her encore appearance.

White Runner
16 x 20 inches Oil on Canvas.

Well it is at the 'hang around the studio stage. Still need to shoot it in good light. Finished it after dark and you never can get a good photo of it.  This is definitely at contemporary horse painting.  Brush and not knife but full of spunk, life and spirit... life on the run you might say.
Unburdened by 'stuff' and 'people'.

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn bush will grow the juniper,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.” Psalm 55:12-13
