"Cascading Rhythms" Palette knife oil painting by Niki Gulley
“Cascading Rhythms” ©2014 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on canvas
Water pounds its way down the falls: cascading, rushing, charging into the riverbed -- flowing over rocks, swiftly moving forward. Untamed, the surge finds its way over, under, around the boulder-strewn river. Tumbling waters drive up mists above the falls, the rhythmic sounds create a soothing harmony below. Autumn’s low light casts long lines through the Aspen trees and glowing verge.
E-mail Niki Gulley for more information on her contemporary landscape paintings.

Niki Gulley’s passion for painting began in grade school when she had to draw something as mundane as shoes for art class, and loved every minute of it. Her parents enrolled her in private lessons and she was hooked. Following her childhood in Chicago, Niki relocated to Dallas to pursue an art major at SMU. Since she disliked the freezing Illinois winters, Dallas seemed like the place to stay after graduating.
Next, Gulley entered the world of advertising, working as art director for a local magazine. After a few years passed, Niki felt like something was missing. So she started painting again every free moment. This is what she had been missing and she began to feel fulfilled again.
It is from this feeling of true joy that Niki translates onto canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of our landscape, utilizing vivid colors in oil paint and pastels to convey a particular mood. Gulley invites you to reconnect with nature and escape day-to-day responsibilities along with her in these creations.

"Just Because" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art
I love this softer color palette with the bright pops of orange. For this painting I used a very limited palette of five colors and white: cadmium yellow medium and light, sap green, alizarin crimson, and cerulean. It makes for such nice color harmony.
Continue to enjoy painting the flower bouquets using my palette knives. They require a LOT of paint on these larger canvases (although this particular one isn't too large) to get that thickness and those great knife marks. Enjoy!

My goal is to deliberate the balance of representation and design. I am particularly moved by artists who are able to take abstraction further, offering more information with less detail. My work is not to reconstruct or comment on social, natural or cultural reality. While I have great respect for artists who do, I think my path has been towards the creation of studies of time and place using an acute understanding of design and color theory.
I believe my work is expressionistic and is differentiated by the unique and arbitrary layering of complex colors. I am directed by the fundamentals of interior design and elements of design, especially intrigued by light. I am powered by my own highly personal vision and I encourage people who view my work to consider my process of decision-making. It is a course that is followed without hesitation and from which; I am not able to deviate. A day of successful painting is it the best of days. It is a selfish endeavor. I wish for the viewer to arrive at a personal determination, framed in their own experiences and therefore, apart from reference, I prefer not to name my work.

Santa Fe Golden Light, New Contemporary Landscape Painting by Sheri Jones
Santa Fe Golden Light
22x28 oil on canvas
I was fortunate to spend some time in Santa Fe during the fall color display. This was inspired from a location I painted at in the heart of town. There was a small park with distance views of the mountains and the glorious trees. This is available for purchase.

New Dallas Skyline Painting by Niki Gulley
"Golden Moment, White Rock Lake" ©2014 Niki Gulley
Textured oil on canvas • 12" x 24"
On a peaceful autumn day last fall, I went out with my camera to White Rock Lake and captured this beautiful sunset behind the Dallas skyline. I liked how the pampas grass and various plants in the foreground were back lit by the setting sun and how the water's surface was shimmering from the low light, adding to a sense of mystery and tranquility in that golden moment.

This week's wild and wacky Wednesday painting on sale is a close-up view of lacetop hydrangea from my flower garden in North Carolina
This 6x8" oil was originally $95.95 but I have marked it down more than 50% to help it find a new home. I like the delicate, fragile look of this painting...just like the actual flower.

Autum Pear
Autumn Pear - SOLD
5" x 7" oil on panel
Silence doesn't mean I'm not painting. It means its head down mode and full steam ahead. I'm trying to make up time in the boat series after deciding that one piece just wasn't working for me, and there was no choice but to restart it.
I think we all know when we don't put our best out there. Sometimes its easy to let something go just because its the path of least resistance, even if we know something is not right with the painting. Yes, I could have added the piece but, to me, it would have stuck out like a sore thumb in exhibition and niggled at me constantly.
So now its being redone and coming along nicely. I've also got #9 on the easel and am pretty much on track again for time - or I hope so.
Of course with the end of one painting, the inevitable "end of palette" small painting was in order. An autumn pear. Pears are likely the most over painted subject in the world, some good, some bad and some very bad. To give them their dues, the shape is simple and value can be complex depending on the lighting. Its the perfect beginner's fruit to test painting skills with in all mediums.
When I finish all the boats in the series, it might be fun to see if people can match the end of palette painting with the actually painting, based on colours used.
You can find more of my work on my website Jeanette Jobson Fine Art, on my blog, Illustrated Life, and on Facebook and Twitter. Stop by and say hi, I'd love to hear from you!

I am a professional visual artist in northeastern Newfoundland and Labrador. I am inspired by the ocean and boats. Reflections and colour are a large part of my work as well as creating the nuances in values that make these things so unique.
I am an impressionist painter working with a palette knife, however, I do use other mediums for small paintings and create original prints in the form of linocuts and etchings.
You can find my larger works on my website www.jeanettejobson.com. The process of creating a piece of art is often shown on my blog http://illustratedlife.blogspot.com through works in progress, tutorials and sometimes giveaways! I also accept commissions and teach drawing and palette knife painting through workshops and privately.
You can also find me on Facebook (jeanette Jobson Fine Art) or Twitter (jeanettejobson). Drop by and say hello, I'd love to meet you and share my journey.
