STUDIO STILL LIFE, 6x6 INCH OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

This was done just for fun; messing around in the studio.

Looking for the magic of ordinary things. Catching the luminous quality of light in the bottle of linseed oil. And the reflections on the silver can of brushes.

Keeping the brushwork loose enough to maintain some mystery, and spontaneous enough to pump dynamic energy into the piece. Click the detail image to see it clearly.

I call this “PLAY TIME IN THE STUDIO” This is a 6x6 inch original oil painting, ready for framing. If you would like to own this painting contact me directly at tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for looking.

Karen Tarlton Original oil painting - Beach Baby - impasto palette knife fine art

I'm feeling nostalgic this Mother's Day eve. My girls are all grown up....18 and 16 and I don't know whether to cry for joy for what wonderful young women they have become, or sob in sadness for the fact that they are young women and not my little babies anymore.

I'm sure I'm not the only mother with this story and these empty nest feelings. Our oldest is off to college in a few months. So this is the long windend inspiration for my new series of beach baby paintings! Makes me happy to paint these and I'm hoping they make someone else smile too. Many more in the works, but this is one of my favorites!!

Happy Mother's Day!

Pike Place Market 19" x 21" Palette Knife Oil on Cradled Panel

Van Gogh Afternoon

This piece is to honor the genius of Van Gogh.
I wonder what he would think if he knew artists all over the world covet his work and try to emulate him.
It was a peaceful time in my studio,
I so love his brush strokes, the light and the emotion in his work.

What I loved about doing this one was the intensity of the blue hues in the background. I usually shy away from blues this bluesy, but wanted to stretch again and see about getting comfortable with it. Lots more ultramarine in this than I usually do in my mixes. I purchased 7 new colors from Gamblin the other day. All very non-traditional. I always mix my own colors, which is very time consuming, so I wanted to see how I would like the more pastelly hues already mixed for me. They're not too bad actually. But I found it necessary to go ahead and mix in a bit of the surrounding colors in order to create the harmony that is needed to bring a painting closer together. My mixing time was less, which allowed more time for the real fun!

"An Easy Start"- Floral by Roxanne Steed

12"x16" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival panel

"No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you - life."

- anonymous

"An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest."- Spanish proverb

"There's a lot more to being a woman than being a mother, but there's a hell of a lot more to being a mother than most people suspect." -Roseanne Barr

"Other things may change us, but we start and end with family." -Anthony Brandt

It's been a busy week, shipping out two paintings that were dry and ready to ship, framing up another one that's ready to deliver next. And of course, painting. "An Easy Start" is a little larger than most in my current series of florals (the Sunshine Series). It pictures what I imagine to be an 'easy start' to a day, flowers, and a cup of something hot, perhaps a lump or two of sugar if you prefer?

I also knew that with my time restraints this week from other appointments, that I might take a bit longer to finish this one. So instead of the Cremnitz white that I usually use, I did use Titanium white on this one. Some of the attendees at my demo last Saturday might recall that I usually use Cremnitz white in my work. It is a lead based paint that really has a wonderful consistency and sets up within a day or so, without the stickiness that some alkyd paints have, or runnyness that an alkyd medium might have. This painting, I knew I didn't want it drying too fast on me, so back to the Titanium white paint. Now it will probably take several weeks to dry to the touch on the surface.

Some of my blog readers might remember that last summer I did a little 'white paint experiment' testing out just about every type of white oil paint out there. They do vary by brand and by color name. Each has it's own particular qualities, thicknesses, opaqueness vs. transparency, & drying times. It's useful to know what you can expect out of the tube that you buy. As an artist, you'll find it so helpful to know your materials as well as you can.

*****I hope you enjoy your Mother's Day weekend- whether you are a mom, or are spending time with your mom....or honoring the memory of her, or even being a 'stand-in mom' of sorts to those you love. I think Roseanne Barr would agree, it's a lot more complicated than many would suspect!

“Bridge to Tomorrow,” White Rock Lake ©2011 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on canvas
White Rock Lake sparkles in the evening sunset encompassed by the dark silhouette of the downtown Dallas skyline and the cresting bridge that carries cyclists around the lake's bike trail. Forefront dense shrubs, pampas grasses and trees frame the image and hold it in a mirror reflection of the bridge – an intriguing and complex composition that is designed to move you, the viewer, into the painting and carry your eye around this picturesque view of Dallas's cherished White Rock Lake. Rich with texture, thick palette knife strokes build lights and shadows; selecting saturated colors to suggest hope and optimism about upcoming days and using mysterious darks to define the lush foliage and offset the lowering sun.

To see this painting of downtown Dallas and more of Niki Gulley’s textured palette knife oil paintings in person, please stop by her booth at the Cottonwood Art Festival this weekend.

Ulupalakua View, Maui - Janet Bludau

This 6x6 oil on board was completed earlier in the year.  As with many of my paintings I have used both palette knifes and brushes.  I love the combined effects of the rough and smooth, thick and thin.
I joined the Palette Knife Painting group online not too long ago so you haven't seen this one yet!  I lived on the island of Maui for 5 years and this was the view from a friend's porch in Ulupalakua.  The water you see in the distance would be Makena Beach.  This is a beautiful part of the island and shouldn't be missed if you find yourself there!

palette knife colorist oil landscape by BECKY JOY

Jewel of the Creek 6"x6" oil $150. Click here to purchase.

Well, back to painting in the studio today. I started this painting a couple of months ago using an 8x10 plein air that I had painted on Cave Creek. I liked the colors in the painting, but felt that the composition was all over the place. In this painting I simplified the composition.
When I first started painting this one, it was a frustrating day. It just seemed liked nothing was going right. One of those bad painting day. After wiping the painting off two or three times, I took a paper towel to it and wiped off where I wanted the light. Those shapes gave me the lights for the composition. So, it was back to this and pick it up today.

I just got my Alyson Stanfield book, "I'd Rather Be in the Studio". I have her previous book and really liked it. This is the updated version. I spent some time last night reading it. This version has updated information on social media and the internet. Fist step, I need to get more organized. When I came home from this trip, I felt a little parlyzed with so many things to get done. I think its list time. I did finish my online traffic school and passed the test. Thank goodness that is over. I hate having things like that hanging over me.

I still have openings in my workshop in Pasadena, 3 days of plein air for $150.

Talk to y'all later.

More good lesson material in this one. Again and again and again, it's all about values! And colors too, but the value shifts are what I'm learning about most. The figure here was quite difficult to bring together because the darkest dark and the lightest light were so close on the value scale, and it took me a while to figure that out. It's an example of painting what you see; not what you think you see, or what you think you have to paint in order to create a good representation of whatever it is you're painting.

Now then - I want to write more about the controversial issue of working from another artist's work. It's a sea of factual copyright mish-mash, flavored with varying personal ideologies. In this case here, after torturing myself with the ethical aspect of doing such studies and selling them, I have determined for sure that Potthast's beach paintings are now considered to be public domain and most of them are noted "date unknown". What we do know for sure is that these beach paintings were created in the summer months (in any one of a number of seaside art colonies including Coney Island & Far Rockaway) after his final move to Manhattan in 1896. More specifically, they are generally known to have been painted somewhere between the years of 1910-1920. The latest possible US copyright expiration date would have been 1997, which is 70 years after his death. Sooooo - I have not violated any copyright issues in painting and posting these studies. For good measure, I'll add that my references were downloaded from the internet, and therefore were not copyrighted duplicates of the originals. (Had I referenced a poster, greeting card, book, etc. - it might be a different story). Next up is the issue of whether or not to sign my studies. This too seems to be a confusing topic with differing opinions of what is acceptable, unethical, or just plain rude & disrespectful. My comfort level here lies with signing the front with just initials (SCS), and the back with my full signature, plus "after Edward Henry Potthast". And finally, the issue of selling these pieces. Again - it's a sticky topic with stances ranging from "how dare you" to "sure, why not, you need the cash-right?". Somewhere in between is the subjective area of just how interpretive my studies actually are, and whether or not my derivations bring forth anything identifiable as my own. I believe these studies are unique by way of how I apply the paint; the shape, size and direction of the strokes. My technique, if I may say so without raising eyebrows, is pretty much easy to spot. So there you have it!

Sunflower miniature...Palette Knife Painting by Peg Whitacre

At the end of the painting day it's often fun to use up left over paint by making small gems. I found several 4x5 pieces of masonite and chose to make some small floral paintings starting with a couple of sunflowers.  They always brighten the day no matter where they are and no matter how often we make them a subject they are always bright and chipper.  Having found 4 small brown-toned frames at an antique shop I am offering this painting and three others already framed and ready to go.  For $25.00 you can't go wrong!  If interested contact me at pwhitacre@att.net.  Enjoy!

TOM BROWN MINIATURE ART, ACEO, POSTCARD POCKET PAINTING

“SEASCAPE III” is an original oil painting, a little jewel with lots of sparkle.

Paintings this size are known by various names such as miniatures, ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals), postcard paintings or pocket paintings. And they are highly collectible.

When time or circumstances do not permit a larger painting these small sizes allow me to explore an idea, capture a moment on location or work out problems before launching into a large painting in the studio.

This painting is a mere 4”x3”. It is small enough to fit in your pocket or use as an elegant bookmark. It is painted with genuine oil paints on an art card and will be shipped in a plastic protective sleeve.

The painting is one of four in a series. It is sold unframed, but I have included photos showing how it might be displayed in a frame or on a small table easel.

Texas Bluebonnets & Wildflowers oil paintings by Niki Gulley

"Texas Treats IV" ©2011 Niki Gulley
12" x 12" oil painting on canvas

I painted these Texas bluebonnets & Indian Blanket with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture so that the image comes to life and leaps off the canvas! In this wildflower painting series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

Refresh, Renew, & Simplify - Floral Bouquet by Roxanne Steed

6"x6" oil on archival panel

“Purity and simplicity are the two wings with which man soars above the earth and all temporary nature.”

Thomas Kempis

I finished painting this last week before I left for VA to give a demo/presentation at London Square Gallery (more about that in the next post).

This was a rather large bouquet, one that I normally would paint at least 12"x12". I wanted to use this as an exercise to simplify this down to fit a 6"x6" panel. To do so would mean I'd have to really observe the big shapes/ keep it at it's simplest form...details only if there was space to indicate it. I'm rather happy with how this fit down into this size. Of course, larger would allow for more details in the flowers, etc.

To purchase while it's still wet, please visit my DailyPainters.com gallery/store.

Reading series - Figurative Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

How do you all like the new blogger dashboard? I totally love it. Gives me the comfort of using MS Word right here within blogger.

This painting is from my long ongoing series "Impressions of a European Summer", a series of images that capture the spirit of summer in this part of the world. Loved the pose of this woman reading happily without a care in the world that I just had to paint her. The different angle was fun to paint too. Do you like it?
